Remember those late summer days when you were tired of watching reruns and couldn't wait for the new fall TV season? Am I the only one who is missing that? The lack of sitcoms has resulted in nothing to look forward to every fall. The addition of "mid-season replacements" and television executives who move around sitcoms too much has left most of us without a "favorite show" anymore. Most recently, I enjoyed "Arrested Development," but the time slot seemed to move around and I was never able to find it. And then it was gone.
I like reality TV as much as the next person, but there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the start of the new "seasons." I love Bravo's "Top Chef," but I couldn't tell you what month to even begin looking for it. Same goes for the dramas like FX's "Rescue Me." No clue when that will be on again.
We have about 70 channels on our cable, but I always seem to end up watching something on The Food Network or HGTV. Even my kids don't follow many shows. College daughter will watch "Survivor" or "America's Next Top Model" during their respective "seasons," but middle child tends to look for reruns of "The Cosby Show" and "Full House." And my son just sticks to playing Habbo on the computer, with a few episodes of "The Suite Life" (just to annoy me, I fear!) thrown in the mix.
Is there anything worth watching that you actively seek out?
i am completely confused most of the time and rarely have control of the remote often enough to get a chance at anything i might like.
ReplyDeletebut i do like "good eats" and "project runway" (not because i give a hoot about fashion but because my mom was a seamstress and i appreciate the skill needed to come up with an idea, make a pattern and execute it in such a short period of time.)
I'm not really looking forward to any new shows, aside from Heroe's, which, if it sucks as bad as last season, runs the risk of losing me forever, a fact I'm no doubt sure they fear!
ReplyDeleteI also just program Top Chef and things like Nip/Tuck (which has sucked for three seasons, but apparently I don't afford it the same grace I do Heroe's!) into the DVR, so when the new season eventually rolls around, it starts recording them. However, I'm like you, when the TV is on, I often gravitate toward the Food Network or one of the Discovery channels. If the kids have access first, I swear all I hear coming from it is wrestling, Suite Life..., and Hannah Montana.
My husband, bless him, is eagerly awaiting the return of Battlestar Galactica.
These days the TV is that blinking thing I walk by as I head off to work, to Church, or out to the woods. Afraid I've not got much interest these days. Someone else 'needs' the remote and chase after H(is)G(rief)TV and that foody stuff all the time. You know, all that fru-fru stuff that'd wilt at the sight of my chain saw ... :-)
ReplyDeleteWe are getting closer and closer to a 'TV-free Zone' at our house. There is just nothing worth investing my precious time and brain cells on, more than the day-to-day details of our life.
ReplyDeleteThe boys and I will occasionally watch sports on weekends (and even at that, we dropped our cable a couple years back, when I came to the realization that having ESPN just gave me incentive to watch more TV that I didn't really want to watch), and our DVD player still gets a pretty decent workout, but it's getting to be a refreshingly long time since we watched any 'regular shows'. . .
Heroes, Survivor and Amazing Race. If I can get all those, I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I haven't had cable since 2005. And I don't miss it at all!
ReplyDeleteLime - I know a lot of people who enjoy Project Runway, but I can't get past the snooty judges.
ReplyDeleteFADKOG - I'm embarrassed to say that I've watched Nip/Tuck a few times. That is just porno for housewives.
Xavier - Fortunately for my husband, I only like the "House Hunter" shows on HGTV.
Desmond - No one in our house enjoys movies, as weird as that may be. And I usually read at least one book per week, but at the end of the day, I just need to veg out with some mindless entertainment. And that's the problem - finding something entertaining.
Mama - We usually enjoy Amazing Race here, except we get tired of the token "old couple," "gay couple," and "constantly bickering couple."
My wife watches some awful TV. I mean, seriously awful. All those reality game shows on MTV and VH1 and everywhere else. "I Love Money" and "Road Rules" and all that stuff. It pains me to watch and I like to make fun of her about it.
ReplyDeleteI think the only network show I occasionally watch is The Office. There are often things to watch, just by flipping around, on the Discovery Channel, or ESPN, or IFC, or even the Documentary channel, on occasion, but there are few things that both my wife and I agree on.
I could probably see myself enjoying Heroes or Lost, but I've honestly never seen an episode of either. I have some friends that have the DVDs of the last few seasons of each... Maybe someday I'll borrow them.
And long live the Cosby Show.
FTN - Road Rules was a great show, but is no longer on - they now just have those awful RR/RW Challenges. But I do enjoy my Real World.
ReplyDeleteAnd my spouse only watches sports and news, so we do not watch TV together either. I miss those days when we'd look forward to watching Seinfeld together.
The only show I actively pursue watching is Survivor. I've watched every season. Delighted Husband is an Astros, Rockets and Texans fan, so he watches those games and I hang out in the gameroom with him...playing footsie while reading a novel or blogging on my laptop. I can't tell you how many posts I've written with Astros chatter on in the background.
ReplyDeleteSW - you, my dear, are living the survivor life right now. Still praying for ya.
ReplyDeleteThank you darlin. Yes, I suppose that's true. Ike has been a real Immunity Challenge. Pray on, darlin, pray on.
ReplyDeleteWe watched the 2 hour season premiere last night and really enjoyed it.
I'm totally with you. I've actually given up on regular TV and now I get all of my favorite series on Netflix, so I'm a season behind on everything, but at least I get to watch whenever I want.
ReplyDeleteAnd just to warn you...Zach and Cody now live on a ship, and my daughter informed me that there is a new character that "farts classical rock".
I don't even think she knows what classic rock even is, but I didn't want her introduction to come by way of a flatulent pre-teen. *sigh*.
SW - Husband said it looked like a good Survivor season too.
ReplyDeleteMM - I was vaguely aware of some bad lounge singing coming from our TV yesterday. Thanks for the heads up on the new home for that pair of annoying twins.
