Update On Food Desperation At Unnamed College In Midwest

Most recent phone conversation with college daughter:

Me: Are you running low on popcorn or hot chocolate?

Her: No. In fact, I really haven't opened any of the boxes.

Me: Huh? I thought you didn't like the dining hall food and you were hungry all the time?

Her: Mom. You should see the microwave oven in our dorm. It's filthy and I'm not about to cook anything in it. There is food from the last century splattered in there.

Me: Oh come on. It can't be that bad.

Her: Ok - I'm sending you a picture ...........................................

Now maybe this is just me, but I would have no trouble cooking anything in there. It doesn't even look that dirty to me. More like just stained. Since microwaves are not allowed in their actual rooms, she is going to have to live with it. But I must say, I think this speaks volumes about my skills as a homemaker that my daughter is appalled by a dirty microwave!

  1. click on it to see a bigger and clearer image. it's pretty gross looking to me. i don't think i'd cook in it as is. however, the question i'd ask is...have you ever considered CLEANING it?

  2. Yeah, what Lime said. . . Even I, in all my guy-ness, would eventually say, 'the heck with it' and clean the damn thing.

And gosh, popcorn and hot chocolate? All my college-age kids want to eat is mac-n-cheese and ramen noodles. . .

  3. She should prep for the future starting now, because every microwave in every breakroom at every office I've ever worked at has been a cess pool of evil. So vile, so smelly. They're why I never eat any heated foods at work!

  5. Lime - Yes, I asked her if she could just clean it, to which she replied, "You can't clean food off dating back to 1992."

Desmond - She'll only eat homemade mac-n-cheese and Ramen noodles would be too salty for her. And yes, I have only myself to blame for those high standards of good taste.

FADKOG - I knew you, the Mistress of Clean, would have nothing to do with that sort of filth :)

  6. Oh, man, I don't think I could use it either.

BTW, Trooper and I have a "thing". It's a fake relationship, but I do agree...he is a hottie and is definately crush worthy. Too bad he lives in Canada. Just too far away.

  7. I think with my guy roommates in college, it was almost some sort of competition to see who would give in first to do some cleaning.

It's pretty amazing the kind of things you put up with to avoid any cleaning. I'm still amazed we got ANY of our security deposit back on one apartment... My Dad came down the weekend we were to move out and helped us clean for 48 hours straight. 4 guys x 1 apartment x 1 year = Yuck.

And I'm with Fadkog -- I've seen some pretty nasty workplace microwaves in my day, too.

  8. Mama Dawg - I think you need to start a Trooper fan blog. I'd post there!

FTN - What did girls say when they came over to your den of inequity?

  9. Hmmmmm....a Trooper Thorn fan blog.

I can get behind that. If nothing else, it would be funny.

Give me a few days and I might be able to come up with something.

  10. Doesn't the act of microwaving sterilize the germs?

  11. Mama Dawg - Let's see how long it takes Trooper to notice it!

Manager Mom - Good point. And maybe this could be a project for her when she has to take microbiology next year.

  13. Sophomore year my roomates and I hated going downstairs to use the community microwave. My friend brought one into our dorm and we hit it under a blanket when it wasn't in use. It was great.

  14. Tulip - That made me laugh. I remember using a blanket to cover up the cardboard boxes I used as storage in my college boarding room.

  15. LOL!!! - Just pop a bowl of water in there, set the timer for 30-45 seconds and the steam will loosen up some of the gunk in there for easier removal.
Voila! - clean 'wave to cook in! lol

  16. LB - Really? Gunk from the '90's?
