This is why I love College Daughter so much; she sends me random e-mails such as the one below:just thought you might like an update about what is currently in our fridge/freezer:
My stuff: two water bottles
Roomie's stuff: 1 water bottle, 3 cans of diet coke, 4 hot pockets, 1 package of sausage (???!!!), chip dip, 2 rolls of cookie dough, 1 container of cottage cheese (GAG), mayonnaise, veggie dip (not sure what that's for since theres no veggies), and jelly.
love, your healthy daughter
She's still struggling with the college cafeteria food and her diet is consisting of mostly bagels and the salad bar. She claims that the only fruit being served are apples, bananas and oranges. I tell ya, I've spoiled this family with fancy fruit salads all these years. Her other issue is the so-called "gas station meat" which she wants no part of. Again, our family has grown accustomed to boneless white chicken breasts and other identifiable proteins. While I've never been a tofu-loving, free-range, organic cook, I do make the majority of our meals from scratch. Institution food just isn't cutting it with her. She's living for Thanksgivin'
Oh I feel for your daughter. I went to a training school in TN and all they served was grits with gravy! Grits with gravy, where is the meat?? How do you make gravy with no meat? I resorted to buying cans of tuna and V-8 just to cover the food groups.
ReplyDeleteYou should tell her to stock up on her own groceries, she'll feel so much better, you will too I'm sure. :)
I trust she'll be stocking up on the good stuff when she's home for the holiday?
ReplyDeleteJodyj - she buys fresh strawberries and blueberries when she can get to a store. I should tell her to just buy some peanut butter for the protein, huh?
ReplyDeleteAnd grits w/gravy? That is foul!
FADKOG - yeah, I'd better hide my Pepperidge Farm milanos now while I still have the chance. And I have a feeling I'd better go with the 20pound turkey if we want leftovers.
eeesh. i am wondering how it will go for my daughter at school next year. it looks as if she will be going to my alma mater. when i was there we had the most amazing baker (the rest of the food was edible but it was college food, ya know?) the baked goods though....oh man, sooooo good. the college newsletter had news of his death couple of years ago so i wonder...
ReplyDeleteProbably pretty darn close to what Oddkin would report if she did. We got one of the bare-bones meal plans so that she could 'fend for herself' (eat decent) a few times each week. she and her roommate have even done dinners/breakfasts for a bunch of their friends ....
ReplyDeleteShe can't wait to be home ...
The easy solution here is to order pizza every night. There were so many cheapo pizza places in my college town, you could get a large pie for like five bucks, and split it between 2-3 people.
ReplyDeleteI always liked the cafeteria food, though, so I just did both. And I still live for Thanksgiving turkey. Mmm.
To tell you the truth, I just really like food.
Lime - It will be fun to hear you compare your experience with hers next year.
ReplyDeleteXavier - Freshmen had to buy the full meal plan. We'll be cutting back on that next year and giving her a grocery gift card instead.
FTN - At one of my local college bars, we could get a large cheese pizza and a pitcher of beer for 3 bucks on Wed. We were there every Wed. night. Another place had quarter beer night on Thursday. It was good training ground for my mad organizing/scheduling skillz.
I still managed to gain 50 lb my freshman year. . .
ReplyDeleteI mean, you paid for all the food at the beginning of the term, and it was all-you-can-eat, all the time. . . And, like I've said before, self-control has never been my strong suit. . .
I remember one time, when I was washing pots and pans in the cafeteria, they brought a 5-gallon bucket full of spaghetti (with meat sauce) for me to throw down the disposal. Instead, I took it back to my room, and the guys on my floor had leftover spaghetti for two weeks (and, uh, my roommate and I probably got more than our share; since it was in our fridge, after all. . .)
Desmond - That's gross!
ReplyDeleteLOL, bottled water & nothin' else in her part of the fridge? ... how is that healthy? lol (kidding)
ReplyDeleteSheesh, *I* wanna come to your house for T'giving now, too! =)
LB - well, you can come over, but the weather here sucks right now!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh... the days of Roast BEAST and sludge.
ReplyDeleteI once found a whole, entire squished cockroach in my salad.
That's protein... isn't it??
:)
I don't know if you have a Costco around your parts, but I've seen some tasty looking Curry bowls and Asian dishes in the dry good aisles, as well as the frozen foods. (Oh gosh, I did it again with the Costco thing, didn't I?!)
