I Hate Winter - The Early Edition

It is still Fall, isn't it??

Reasons I hate winter:

It's cold and I like to be warm

It gets dark early and then stays dark in the morning, which makes it hard to get out of bed

Static cling

I get those little cracks around my fingernails and my hands are rough and dry I get cracks on my heels that no foot balm will heal

I can't wear flipflops

I can't take walks because no one around here clears their sidewalks, PLUS it's too damn cold!

I gain weight because I can't exercise as much

I make and then eat rich soups and stews, which doesn't help the weight

I have to drive my teens to the bus stop because of the sidewalk issue; it's dark, so walking in the street is out, plus their bookbags weigh 25 pounds and I'm afraid they'll break their necks falling

I'm scared to drive when the roads are bad and people are on my tail when I drive the SPEED LIMIT

Snow blowing the driveway

Paying the gas bills

Wet clothes and dirty shoes/boots

Tons of extra laundry because of jeans and hoodies instead of shorts and t-shirts

Cold and flu season

No more grilling

And finally, this:

  2. Yep, that's why I moved south! Sure we have frost on the ground. Sure it is unusually cool. But it still warms up to the 50's. We have definite seasons (as opposed to Florida which has two seasons, hot and less hot). Winter only lasts from the last week in December to the first week of January. (not really, the month of January can stay rather cool.)

  3. I tend to guage 'winter' according to when I can't safely ride my bicycle (because of the snow on the road). Which, where I live, is typically from early December (ie, now) thru early/mid March.

Up North, where I grew up, we usually had snow on the ground before Thanksgiving, and there would be snow on the ground until early April. It was not uncommon for us to go trick-or-treating in snow flurries. . .

And, much as I hate shopping, my WordVer is 'retailly'. . .

  4. This pretty much encompasses every thought that went through my head this morning when I woke up to the sound of snow plows clearing the streets at 4 a.m., today. It's going to be a very, very long winter!

  5. I'm with you, I hate as well. Luckly I don't have to put up with all the crap you do. Living in So Cal it rarely gets below freezing. No snow to worry about.

Wait a minute I wore flip flops just the other day, and I believe I had on shorts and a tshirt as well. Oh well, have fun...

  6. Winter makes me want to throw a big glass dome over my house and create my own bio-sphere. Sortof a reverse snow globe.

What of it? Think it would work?

  7. So I read Lime's latest post and hit the comment thingy to say "I'm with Calypso" only to find you've beaten me to the punch!

And, so I had to come over here. Turns out I'm completely with you on your feelings about winter, too.

  8. Lime - my favorite Easter was the one spent in Arizona :)

Russ - where are you originally from?

Desmond - are you saying you DON'T have snow before T-Day and into early April? Cuz we do! And it sucks!

FADKOG - yes, nothing like being awakened by the sound of the snow plow, pushing snow into your driveway on its way past.

Mike - thanks for stopping by to rub it in!

Flutter - I'm no scientist, but I think it's worth a shot. Can we get one of those at Lowe's?

Citizen - thanks for stopping by. Hope your new furnace is keeping you warm.

  9. I'm with you on the hands and feet issue. I hate the cold because of the condition it leaves my hands.

  10. Oh, no - those are just the months when it's more-or-less permanently on the ground. . .

We had a pre-Halloween blizzard a few years back that left OurTown without power for 48 hrs, and sold all the stores out of Coleman lanterns and kerosene heaters. . .

And I recall a Memorial Day parade from my childhood where the shirt-sleeved politicians were marching thru snow flurries. . .

  11. I'm with you on every point!! What in the world did we do in a previous life to reap this sort of judgement???
Nothing is worse then cracked feet, mu hubby complains and I'm like 'look buddy, you want baby bottom feet there is a spa down the road my friend-stop your complaining or fork it out'
FYI in lieu of a wonderful pedi and mani I've found Aveeno to be somewhat of an alternative. (I'd push for the pedi though. :O)

  12. Mama - I didn't think it got that cold where you live?

Desmond - ok, you've got me beat on the Memorial Day parade. Have never seen snow at one of those. Monsoon rains, yes, but no snow!

Jody - I have this deal with my feet: I don't like strangers touching them! So, no pedis for moi. I will have to give Aveeno a try. The best I've come up with is this burn ointment that is totally greasy & gross, but it seems to work.

  13. Of course going to bed under blankets and quilts is better than trying to sleep in the summer time with it is too hot for even a sheet.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Trooper - Ok, Mr. Brightside. FYI, I do cover up with a sheet, even in 95 degree weather. It's part of my survival instinct.

I could also bring up the whole hot, sweaty sex thing, but I won't.

  15. AMEN Sister! Preachin' to the choir here.

  16. I hear ya re the hot, sweaty sex. See, Molly really hates being cold, and once she needs more than a light blanket at night, sex is strictly an under-the-covers activity. Which can get hot-and-sweaty in its own right, but the visuals (and the available variety) are somewhat more, uh, limited. . .

    Or is that TMI?

  17. True - Righteous!

Desmond - I definitely like summer lovin' better too.

  18. I am soooooooooooooo with ya, girl!

Even living in the South, I *still* hate winter (and we rarely even get any snow, lol)

Speaking of cold/flu season... got a Kleenex to spare?
    *sneeze*

  19. It's true those of us in warmer climates can romaticize the snow, but those do sound like frustrating limitations.
