I'm not usually an "I hate Mondays" kind of gal, but I am dreading today's events. I'll be sitting through a boring breakfast meeting for a non-profit group I've been involved with for 10 years. I'm the treasurer, so I kind of need to make an appearance and prove that I haven't absconded with their funds. The meetings would be fine if people didn't chit chat forever and bring up irrelevant topics. A one page agenda often takes this group 2.5 hours to get through. I'm formulating ideas for why I'll need to leave early. My son has an orthodontist appointment after school. He's had braces for 18 months and the orthodontist has been waiting on a molar to come in to hook some of the wires to. My poor son had to have four baby teeth pulled to have all of this work started and one of the adult teeth has never made an appearance. After having his mouth x-rayed at the dentist last week, we have come to find that the tooth has very small roots and is not even close to the surface. The dentist thinks that oral surgery is going to be necessary, but it's up to the orthodontist. I am not good with kid surgeries. Ask my Husband. He just tells me to stay home and be hysterical because I tend to scare the children with my hyperventilation.
To conclude this glorious day, I have to take Middle Child to a high school meeting to get the results (and listen to them read all about said results) of her PSAT and PLAN testing. And listen to college talk. All the while sitting there knowing full well this child will never be off to college and that her PSAT score will be in the bottom 10% of the nation. Fun, fun! And I suppose since the school just got one of those blue ribbon awards from Mr. President, there will be tons of congratulations and self back patting being done up on stage tonight by the staff. Grrrr.....
I'm just full of charm this morning, aren't I?
Oral surgery sucks. Been there, done that, bought the tee shirt.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why they announce the PSAT scores. I remember being gathered in the auditorium with my entire class while they read out the score alphabetically. I felt a little bad for the low scorers, but they were barely paying attention anyway. I got over it and concentrated on myself.
Our oldest daughter had braces. And she also had a tooth that 'didn't come in' - there was a big gap where the tooth was supposed to be. But when they did the x-rays to get a read on the braces situation, turns out the missing tooth was there, after all - just growing from the roof of her mouth, about an inch from where it was supposed to be. So part of the orthodontia was to 'lasso' the errant tooth and drag it down to where it belonged. It seems to have worked just fine, 'cuz today, she's got a really nice, straight set of teeth. . .
ReplyDeleteOoh, poor kid. That's not going to be fun for him.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't read her results publically, did they? They shold be doing an individual meeting to help you guys plan for her particular future.
Yeah, I hate Monday's, too.
ReplyDeleteI think I've decided this weekend that I have a cavity that needs to be addressed soon, but I'll undoubtedly put it off because I fear going to the dentist and being told that, yes, I have a cavity, but something more drastic will be necessary and words like 'root canal' and 'oral surgery' will be bantered about. I come from a lone line of dentally challenged family members!
ReplyDeleteYour Monday does sound less than enviable. I've sat in those nonprofit group meetings and I'd be plotting harm as the first hour ticked by. Good luck! Hope you make it through the day safely!
Russ - No, they won't announce individual scores (there are over 400 in her class). They'll just stand there and explain what each score means, line by line. Like we can't read test results for ourselves!
ReplyDeleteDesmond - Sounds exactly like what my son will need to have done, only his tooth is on the lower jaw. I'll know later today what the plan is.
Citizen - I suppose at our next IEP meeting, we will be discussing transition in more detail. It's just scary to send a sheltered kid out in the world.
Mama - Thanks for the sympathy!
FADKOG - I left after 1.5 hours with the excuse of important "banking" to do. And here I am!
It's called "life' and sometimes it's just sucky.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the oral surgery.. I have a horrible set of teeth and had a lot of work done as a kid, I think the hubs is right for you to stay home. mY mother would get hysterical and it never made me feel better although it worked for her
Here, Cocotte... I'm pouring you a nice tall glass of Something Good and putting on some great jazz in a dark room. Go sit and decompress. You need it.
ReplyDelete:)
OK, we'll treat the non-profit meeting like a bad blind date. What time do you want me to call you so you can act like something's wrong and run out the door?
ReplyDeleteIt's the least I can do after you visited my blog and all.
:^) Anna
I agree with Flutter, pour yourself something and R.E.L.A.X!!
ReplyDeletei feel your pain with the drudgery of mandatory meetings. my daughter feels your son's pain and is delighted to be out of braces now.
ReplyDeletethey announce the scores? uh, that's just wrong...
Bernthis - I'm weird that way. I had no problem doing natural childbirth three times, but I'm queasy around blood and needles.
ReplyDeleteFlutterby - Got any Pinot Noir? Actually, I made it through the day sans the alcohol. I'm proud.
Anna - That was a great idea!
Jody - I'm just glad it's now Tuesday.
Lime - See my comment to Russ. No individual scores were read. But the meeting was painful, nonetheless. We snuck out halfway into it. I don't need to sit there and be read to. My personal reading scores were always quite high!
Boy, I was on a board like that for ten years myself before I finally resigned. I haven't got 3 hours to waste on mostly chit-chat and story telling.
ReplyDeleteOddkin just had 4 wisdom teeth over a couple days before Christmas. No fun! Good luck with that.
And the PSAT thing? They don't read off grades like that around here and I am amazed that student privacy laws ar enot invoked to stop that practice. Not only is the practice demoralizing, it's illegal as far as I can tell!
Xavier - The ortho has given us a reprieve on the tooth, at least for six months. He didn't seem to think it was in as dire circumstances as the dentist.
ReplyDeleteAgain, NO INDIVIDUAL TEST SCORES ARE READ ALOUD....scores are only talked about as a whole, and bragged about as if ours is the only public school in the nation who has national merit finalists. It's just hard to sit through when your child is in the bottom ranking. I left after half an hour of it.
