The Crap People Eat

And when I say "crap," you can take that literally. We've been a bit nervous around here about the peanut butter scare. My kids are voracious peanut butter cracker, granola bar, and cookie eaters. Meaning, I've been checking the Food & Drug Administration's official site on a daily basis for updates on what I have to throw away from my well stocked cupboards. While scanning the candy list for Reese cups, I came across the following tasty tidbits:

Okay, I can see buying these products as a novelty item, but do people really eat this stuff on a regular basis? And should anyone be surprised that salmonella would be involved?

And, what in the world is "Goo Goo?"

  1. Well, if by GooGoo you mean GooGoo Clusters they are an old timey candy you can still buy at Cracker Barrel. They are a gooey peanutty mess of stuff smothered in chocolate and are absolutely to die for.

I guess I'm an idiot because I have so far refused to get all freaked out by the peanut scare and continue feeding N and me all our favorite foods, peanutty or not.

Yeah, we'll probably be dead within the week.

  2. One year for Christmas, my SIL gave out little bags of mini-marshmallows (the kind you put in hot cocoa) labelled 'snowman poop'. . .

And of course, jokes about chocolate-covered peanuts/raisins vis-a-vis rabbit/deer droppings have been with us for many years. . .

I'm with Truey - we really haven't worried too much about the peanut scare. So, if I suddenly go on an unannounced hiatus, somebody call the coroner's office, OK?

  4. Xavier - I prefer mine to be of a potato variety.

True - Good to know why GooGoo is!

    Mama - Isn't it though?

Desmond - I wasn't too worried about the PB scare until the FDA started adding more and more products to the list every day. There are now ice cream items.

Lime - My son actually has one of those things that poops jelly beans. At least I think they're jelly beans :)

  6. Last I heard, Reese's has it's own peanut source so they're safe. However that was in the beginning of the scare. Don't know if their source has been added to the list.
We tried to buy a peanut butter sandwich out recently and of course they'd taken it out of the deli.
Fortunately, our peanut butter at home is from a large backstock that I purchased well before the recall.
I don't know what we'd do without peanut butter in this house!

  7. Citizen - I'm more of a plain, dark chocolate kind of girl, but maybe I should look into the Goo!

Zip - Yes, when you've got kids, you need the PB!
