I've Got A Fever And The Only Prescription Is . . .

Last night was my son's middle school band concert. He plays the trumpet. As he always does, he told me not to expect too much and that they (the 8th grade band) are bad. I have no idea why he is so negative, but I suppose there are kids in the band who don't take it as seriously as he does. To my ear, they always sound very good. Maybe the middle school auditorium has poor acoustics.

The conversation in the van on the way to the school was comical. College Daughter, home on her spring break, decided to attend her first ever band concert, not having any better offers (son has been in band for four years now). Here is an excerpt from some of their conversation:

Daughter: What songs are you playing?
Son: Band songs; nothing you would have heard of. We don't play Soldja Boy!

Daughter: Are you the best trumpet player? (He's in the first chair group)
Son: Noooo......there are 18 trumpet players. Do you really think I'd be the best?
Daughter: ???

Daughter: How long is this concert?
Son: About an hour.
Daughter: That long?? (There are 3 bands playing; how could she think it would be shorter?)

Daughter: Do you think I'll see anyone I know?
Son: I don't know who you know.
Me: I'm sure there will be lots of hot college men there (in my special sarcastic tone)

The concert was truly entertaining. They did a Marches of the Armed Forces at the end where they played the different groups' songs and asked those in the audience to stand if they or a family member, living or deceased, had been in the army, navy, air force, marines or coast guard as they played their song. It was nice to see some patriotism being taught to the students.

The best part of the show was the last song that the 7th graders played. I actually recognized the tune - On Broadway. As I'm listening and watching, I see a kid in the percussion standing and using a drumstick to keep the beat on some sort of hand held object. I kept trying to see what it was, but the sound was unmistakable.............I turned to my husband, and we both mouthed the words at the same time........."More Cowbell." It was hilarious. I think that band director has one hellava sense of humor!

  1. glad it was a good evening and i hope the 8th grader felt better about his band after the performance.

lol @ more cowbell. one time when his sisters were performing and my son was small and did not want to be at the concert he sat sulking. at the end of a number one lone trombone tooted out a single low note accidentally. i leaned over and quietly intoned to my son, "horn fart." he burst out laughing and enjoyed the rest of the concert hoping to here more horn farts.

  2. I wonder if Christopher Walken is OK with the fact that, as far as millions of people are concerned, that goofy little skit on SNL is the signature moment of his career. . .

And, Lime. . . I'm sorry, you just. . . (*blowing snot out my nose*)

  3. My kids usually talk up a school concert and whatever solo part they might have for weeks and weeks, and so I am, as I always am, very excited to go watch them because I am sure they're going to shine brighter than any other child there that evening. Then we get there and they get on the risers or the chairs, and they look sulky. They never smile. They say their parts quietly. Then I become like College Daughter and ask them all kinds of questions, wanting to know all kinds of things and why they appeared to change their performance tune, to to speak.

Regardless, I love school concerts. Always have. Always will. Those kids work darn hard!

  5. My son's middle school band is doing Pirates from the Carribean and Halo 3 right now. He says his band director is good about picking out fun songs.

  7. Lime - I could have used some humor for all the sporting events I sat through!

Desmond - Isn't Christopher Walken best known for his appearance in a Fatboy Slim video:)

FADKOG - My kids have never been "big talkers" about themselves; Husband & I wonder where they got their genes!

Flutter - Yes, a sullen teen boy and his musically clueless older sister is always good for a laugh.

Citizen - That does sound like some good music. I heard that our high school orchestra is doing star wars music in the spring.

Mama - No matter how many times I watch it, I still LOL!
