Gardening in the 'Burbs

You all wish this could be sitting in your living room, don't you? Last summer, Middle Child wanted to grow some vegetables, so Husband set her up with a few containers on the deck. Due to the multitude of critters on our property and the sloping, wooded lot, this was the best we could manage. She was thrilled. We were all amused by her use of the word "harvest" as a verb. As in, "I harvested some grape tomatoes today." She ate nearly every grape tomato that she harvested, but she was not nearly so happy with the peppers. The seed envelope described those as "pungent" which she didn't care for, so she kept blaming Dad for buying the "pungent pepper" seeds - always with the adjective.

This year, they decided to go all out and order seeds from a catalog. Middle Child poured over the photos and chose vegetables with names like Red Popper Peppers, Sweet Baby Girl Tomatoes and Salad Bush Cucumbers. Husband built that nifty little stand to hold the lights. The minute she comes home from school everyday, she checks her little garden to see what has sprouted or grown taller. She's anxious for the harvest, which probably won't be until late July at the earliest.

Near the end of May, the garden will be replanted and put outside on the deck in containers. And hopefully, these guys won't figure out how to climb the stairs up to the deck. Because they've already wiped out all my day lillies this year.

  1. You know, a couple of guys I knew in college had a similar kind of set-up. But they weren't growing vegetables. . .

  2. aww, great that your husband was willing to set up the system so she could explore a bit of gardening. we have a heavily wooded acre with many deer and raccoon invaders so i understand the difficulty.

  3. That is quite a system. We - my husband, actually, who doesn't evn like them - planted some green pepper plants in pots on our deck last summer, and I think we got two peppers out of the deal because we could never beat the rabbits to them!

  4. Hey, how long 'till your little one is old enough to hunt? :-)

Gardening will be good until then of course!

  5. I'm trying to come up with a clever comment in the vein of Caddy Shack varmites...but the humor just isn't flowing.

  6. Actually, I do have a variant of this sitting in my living room! Mine involvespeat pots on an ironing board.

  7. Des - Only legal activities here.

Lime - Since she doesn't do sports, it's a nice thing for them to share.

FADKOG - Our deck is high enough that rabbits do not visit. Hopefully, squirrels and chipmunks won't be hungry this summer.

Xavier - Well, she's 17 now, but has enough problems that we won't be adding weaponry to the list!

    Laggin - Thanks for trying!

Citizen - Sounds tacky - LOL....please post pictures.

  10. Oh wow, Cocotte.
That is so great that I was inspired to go out and do the same thing.

It lasted for about 30 minutes.

:D Actually, I may still do it. Love the idea of my kids getting to grow stuff. Long as it doesn't just turn into ME growing stuff.

I love that you can see wildlife out your backyard, although I know they are pests in their own right. Looks like you live in a beautiful location.

  11. Mama - If you buy small plants instead of seeds, you would be all set for this season.

Mike - I like that term!

Flutter - We love our property. Our house, not so much, but it's the lot it's situated on that has kept us here.

  12. Ohhh, that's great! I loved doing little gardening projects like that when I was a kid... even the BIG garden we had in the backyard was fun, in an odd masochistic kind of way, lol.

Hope you can keep the furry ones at bay.
