Hitting the Pavement

Day 3 with College Daughter home......I'm trying really hard to adjust to having this young woman back in the house. Husband went down last weekend and brought an entire van's worth of "stuff" back with him. Then, she came home Tuesday with her car packed to the gills. I'm keeping the maker of Space Bags and XL Ziploc Bags in business with cleaning and stuffing bags and trying to find creative places to hide this crap for the next 3.5 months.

Over spring break in March, College Daughter sent out about 30 resumes to local hospitals and nursing homes, in hopes of landing a summer job early in her field of interest. All that work netted one interview, which is next week. We had really hoped that the past three summers of hospital volunteer work would have impressed someone, but the job market is just too weak around here. I've even heard of nurses being laid off (so much for the nursing shortage). I would not want to be a patient right now!

Today, she was out on the streets and hit as many businesses in the area with her resume and/or filled out an application as was possible. Last count, she had stopped in at 25 assorted work places. If her interview does not pan out next week, she said she's going into Phase III. I asked what that is. Bottom of the barrel places to work. Namely, McDonald's.

  1. Not a very nice time for a young person to be looking for a job. Or anyone else, for that matter. . .

  2. Really, really hope she doesn't have to go into Phase III, and that you maintain your sanity!

  3. Des - I've heard that it will be harder than ever because of all the senior citizens working the minimum wage jobs. As much as I love Target, it depresses me to see so many golden agers working there!

FADKOG - If Phase III is enacted, I will be losing my sanity with her complaints.

  5. Can relate, got two collegians currently trying to find jobs here with no real success yet. One can get a few hours at the Vet office she has worked for, but not nearly enough to prepare for next year.

Sensible tried one place that had over 200 applicants for 2 minimum wgae jobs!

  6. Yeah, 'tis a tough time in the job market right now.

Hubby & I were just talking the other night about how thankful we are to still have the jobs we have. If something happened to *his* position, we'd be in DEEP water quick!

Best of luck to your gal & hope it doesn't get to Phase III, for both of your sanities. lol ;)

  7. The job market positively sucks right now. And college kids ae competing with adults who can't kind anything else in spite of their age and experience.

  9. Russ - Things can only go up from here.

Xavier - That is just sad - 200 for 2 spots!

LB - We worry about that here, esp. since I don't even have a job. The fear is always that the company he works for could be bought.

Citizen - Yes, and it kind of makes me feel guilty that she just needs the job for school books, gas and spending money.

  10. Her interview went well, but although it was set up two months ago, the manager didn't seem to know if there were any positions available.....HUH? Daughter told the woman she'd take anything and the lady said they'd hire her for sure if something was available. Honestly, it's a wonder some of these businesses survive.
