It's been another interesting summer with the critters in our area. We've had this weird surplus of chipmunks this summer who have created havoc in our new landscaping. No sooner do I stomp down all their holes, but within the hour, they have been at it again with a dozen more. Can we bottle that energy? It seems the deer just get braver every year. One actually had the nerve to poop on our front porch in the spring. I didn't want to photograph that, but this photo shows how much they enjoy the flavor of hosta. (Click photos for clearer view)Remember our Christmas tree farm? Well, about a third of the trees have already died of natural causes. However, a few have succumbed to a mystery guest who was able to eat each needle off of the "trunk" without knocking over the fencing or digging any sort of noticeable hole.
Even more curious is this.....we had this deck built four years ago. Each summer, someone climbs the stairs of the deck and takes out a random bulb from one of the deck lights. Sometimes it is smashed and sometimes it is just left there (as in my reenactment photo to the left). At first, we thought it was possibly some pranksters in the neighborhood. But really, who would just take one bulb out once or twice a summer and come back to do this year after year? I googled "animal taking out light bulbs" and discovered that President Coolidge had a pet raccoon that unscrewed light bulbs as a hobby. The kids, of course, thought it would be a great idea to set up a surveillance camera. I don't care enough to go to that much trouble.
I accidentally ran over a chipmunk in the driveway last week. Oddly enough, they haven't been running around near the front porch since the untimely death of their cohort. Word must have gotten out about the crazy lady in the van.

The lightbulb thing is too weird and my overactive imagination would totally compel me to set up that hidden camera!
ReplyDeleteSaturday night, Tool Man came bursting inside when he got home and asked me why I'd been digging giant holes in the dirt on the backside of our deck. I was all, "Um, look at me. Do I look like someone who would dig giant holes in the dirt on the backside of our deck?!"
I went out to investigate as Tool Man searched for a shovel, and OMG, the holes were HUGE!!! And long. And very deep. They also hadn't been there sevral hours earlier when my son had mowed.
Naturally, I think someone wants to off me and bury me there some night when I'm here alone. Because I have an overactive imagination.
Wow - they are little menaces! I have tons of ritters, but so far not real trouble other than the raccoon who keeps rummaging through my compost bin.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure it was a chipmunk and not my son...
ReplyDeleteI"m with FADKOG on the overactive imagination.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to imagine what would incite a raccoon to unscrew a lightbulb... think maybe he and a lady friend were enjoying a night on the patio and wanted a bit of mood lighting?
I got nothing. Really.
FADKOG - Perhaps you should lay off the vampire/zombie books and TV shows? But the holes sound the work of a mole to me. The animal kind; not celebrity mole.
ReplyDeleteAgent - The lightbulb thing has to be a raccoon. They seem very nimble with their paws, don't they?
Russ - Mr. B likes to dig, doesn't he?
Flutter - In my google search, it said the raccoon might be attracted to the smell of a human on the lightbulb and think it's food. But yeah, seems farfetched to me!
My hosta's are safe as they're in the back yard, but, I got home from camping this weekend, and found that all of the pretty flowers I'd planted in the front have been eaten by the deer.
ReplyDeleteI'm completely intrigued by the lightbulbs.
Uh, oh. Wait for the Revenge of the Vermin.
ReplyDeleteWe have rabbits that have been eating my hosta and tulips, and lily's...making me SO mad.... and then I saw that thye tried to chew my little cactus that I have in the corner of a garden.... haha... hope it had needles in its tounge. Hope all is well!!
ReplyDeleteI hope it's an animal version of the mole and not Stephen Baldwin planning to show up and scare the hell out of me one night when I check and double check to be sure the deck is locked!
ReplyDeletethwe lightbulbs are way weird. mr. lime and i disagree over chipmunks. i like them.
ReplyDeleteZip - Why is the backyard safe?? A fence?
ReplyDeleteTrooper - I'm suspicious at how quiet the chipmunks have been since the 'incident' with the van. They may be plotting!
Buttafly - The cactus is amazing. I had rabbits eat all my flowers the first year I lived here. I even sprinkled cayenne pepper on them and it didn't help at all.
FADKOG - I just heard Baldwin is bankrupt, so I don't think he'll be flying out to visit you anytime soon!
Lime - I do think they are cute, when they aren't be a nuisance.
set up the hidden cam!!! Gotta know who/what is removing the bulb. lol
ReplyDeleteI have some critters wreaking a little havoc over here, too .. mostly squirrels, but something made a huge VERY deep hole in my hosta garden... and I'm kinda skeered to find out what it is (snake??) I filled the hole with used coffee grounds. Wonder if they like caffeine? lol
We hardly ever have much wildlife around here. The occasional chipmunk, mouse, rat or lizard. But not very often. The wild rat that made itself home in the maintenance was fed by hubby ad I until he left about 2 weeks later and when hubby found a momma mouse and babies in his glove box, he brought me down there to put food and water out for them each day. After the babies got older about 3 weeks, they moved on as well.
