Good Times At National Parks

As promised a few weeks ago, here are some vacation shots from a couple of national parks.

Photos do not do the Grand Canyon any justice, but here's one anyway! My kids enjoy describing my mental anguish while there (I'm deathly afraid of open air heights). "Here's the Grand Canyon; here's the paved sidewalk; and here's Mom." I stayed a few feet beyond the path, in my own personal comfort zone.

This is a great before and after shot at the Petrified Forest. Before: Son having a grand time. After: He had asked me to hold his camera and I accidentally wasted one of his precious photos by snapping a picture of my foot. People really need to learn to carry their own stuff on these trips. I'm tired of being the pack horse.

One of the many geysers at Yellowstone. Middle Child and I both are hypersensitive to odor. The stench that clung to your hair and clothing while visiting these geysers was unbearable for both of us. She was a bit concerned that it wouldn't wash out of her favorite t-shirt. I'm happy to report that it did.

This was taken at Prairie Dog Town in the Badlands of South Dakota. As innocent as this little guy may seem, he managed to chase College Daughter back to the van. We had stopped to get out and take a few photos and this guy took an instant dislike to her. He shot out of that hole and began advancing on her. She's not an animal lover and she hightailed it back to the van and slammed the door. We still laugh about this.

One of my favorite photos at Yellowstone. We were driving along and, around a bend, came upon a huge herd of bison. Many were walking alongside the road. I rolled my window down to get a good shot of one of them and my son, who is usually not one to panic, was yelling at me to roll the window up. A bison up close is quite a beast with its scruffy coat and slobber hanging off its beard, and the growling sounds are like no other. I will never forget my son yelling at me that "it's a monster - roll up your window!!!"

  1. Sweet photos, Cocotte. Especially the buffalo. . .

As I said before, I haven't been to any of the National Parks, as of yet. But 5M visited the Badlands and Grand Tetons on a youth group 'adventure trip' a couple years back; also Dinosaur National Monument. . .

  2. It's a monster! A tasty, tasty monster.

(incidentally, the word verification, "imped", how seasonal!)

  3. Des - Grand Tetons are gorgeous; I think I posted a photo last winter from there. Is Dinosaur in Colorado? It hasn't been close enough on either of our trips out west.

Russ - Husband tried a bison burger while we were out there. As in previous thread, I am wary about my meat products. (I'll stick with the "croperee" which is my word veri!)

  4. Dinosaur National Monument straddles the Utah-Colorado border near Vernal, UT. . .

And, uh, it's probably best if I refrain from commenting on the gorgeousness of Grand Tetons. . .

    ;)

  6. I would like to visit the Grand Canyon one day, but my fear of heights and being near open depths freaks me out. At least people like you provide me photos to at least give me this!

  8. Great shots! Only one of those I've been to is the Grand Canyon .. and you're right, pix don't come close. I took several with a panaramic cam, to piece together like a 360 (er.. 180 lol) -- but, 'course it's one of those things I never got around to actually *doing*.

What a serious boo-boo lip the boy got on his face! lol

Funny how animals can pick the person out of a crowd who doesn't like animals...

Yellowstone looks awesome! - both the geyser and the monster... er, tatonka. ;)

    Thanks for sharing these! =)

  9. too funny. i've been to all of these parks. the bison at yellowstone were a bit unnerving. we tent caqmped and i will never forget arriving at our site ready to set up and finding a bison sitting in the middle of it. what can you do? you sit there and wait until it's ready to leave but it made me wonder what if it decided to come back while i was asleep in the tent. a nylon shell ain't much to keep a ton and a half of critter out.

  10. I miss visiting the parks. Used to do it as a kid, not so much as an adult. Thanks for the reminder pictures....
