Cattle Call

So, did everyone get their H1N1 shot?

(**crickets chirping**)

Has anyone even heard of someone having the H1N1 flu since last October?

Our local school campus was a vaccination site back in November. Husband took the kids on the Sunday it was offered. Although it looked like utter chaos, the coordination of it all was well thought out. There were 4 lines of cars, tons of people directing the lines to different parking lots, shuttle buses taking people to the building, and lots of folks inside with clipboards, directing people to the right rooms. They were all able to get the flu mist. Although my husband wasn't considered 'high risk' like the teens, they just gave it to him too. I drove up there later in the day, hoping to get the mist as well (I dread needles of any sort), but they turned me away for not being high risk. I ended up getting it the next month at a different site, when it was opened up to the general public.

Recently, I read in the paper that only about 30% of the population took advantage of the free vaccinations. Husband couldn't understand why this was. As he said, "That's the first time the government ever gave me something for nothing!" He's a smart man, but reading the Wall Street Journal everyday doesn't put him in touch with middle America, let me tell you. I tried to tell him how suspicious people are of 'big' government, vaccinations, and the medical community in general. Thousands of websites are dedicated to warning us about mercury in the new light bulbs, thermisol in vaccines, and the dangers of soy products. The government is going to beat down your door and take your guns. Social Services is ready to pay a visit if someone in a store sees you yell at your kid. We are only days away from Armageddon, people!

  1. I never do, simply because I had three flu shots and got sick every time. Swore off of them.

but to answer your question, no, I haven't come across anyone either. Weird.

  2. My kids got the vaccine (not free, though). I am not afraid of vaccines or the government but I didn't get the shot because I'm a needle phobe and I'd rather get the flu than a shot. It's a weighing of risks - I did get all my vaccinations before going to Africa, though.

  3. My oldest son got an H1N1 vaccine shot when I took him to the pediatrician for a sports physical this fall. I wasn't really planning on him getting one, so when the doc said "So, let's go ahead with a flu shot and the H1N1 shot," I was all, "Um, OK."

Three minutes later, we went out to pay our bill, and I figured why not see about getting an appointment for my youngest for the vaccine, so I asked about that. The receptionist/nurse told me they didn't have any vaccine in stock at the time. I mentioned my son JUST got one, but she looked at me like I was crazy (so maybe Armageddon is upon us and who knows what they gave my kid!).

So far, knock on wood, aside from my husband's seemingly never ending pneumonia, it's been a really healthy season in my house. I hope it holds out.

  4. I got the H1N1 shot, not for 'free', although it was covered by my insurance.

My tin foil hat fits just fine thankyouverymuch.

  5. Eh, I've never gotten a flu shot. Not that I'm paranoid of the gov't; it's just that the immune system I was born with has always done just fine. And I've heard plenty of stories like M@'s, where people get just as sick from the vaccination as they would if they'd just come down with the virus. . .

Altho, as soon as I say that, my BIL nearly died from H1N1 last fall; called in the relatives, and the whole bit. . .

So, I don't suppose it was complete hooey. . .

  6. Both N and W got the H1N1 vaccine. N got his at school. The public health dept. came out and gave vaccines to all the students whose parents had signed permission slips. W got his on one of his frequent trips to the Dr.

I missed out, not intentionally, just never could match up my schedule with theirs. I did get my seasonal flu shot. I always do that. As a matter of fact, at my job they are free and you are required to get the seasonal flu shot or sign a statement that you refused.

  7. Nope, I've never met ONE person who caught it, either. It's offered free of charge over here too, to the vulnerable. The kids and I passed, I figured a good bout of the 'flu might quiet them down and give me some peace - but it wasn't to be.. (wink)

  8. M - That's what my parents always say!

Agent - I'm afraid of needles too. I would have skipped it if the mist hadn't been offered!

FADKOG - That is a bizarre story!

Russ - The tinfoil hat looks good on you!

Craig - I've never gotten a flu shot until H1N1. The epidemic thing scared me. My grandfather almost died of the flu during WWI. So I guess I'm lucky to be here!

Truey - Husband always gets his at work too. I usually figure since he gets the shot and my kids do too, I'm safe, so I don't bother.

Shrinky - I did know a few people with H1N1 in Sept/Oct. It seems to have stopped spreading after that. Thanks for stopping by!
