L'Eggo Of My Generic Waffle

It's with great distress that I inform you that due to floods in Atlanta and machinery dysfunction in Tennessee, there is a severe shortage of Eggo frozen waffles. It's been crisis time in our house for over two months. My kids are addicted to the Eggo chocolate chip waffles. I slowly watched my grocery store's stockpile of them disappear, followed by the strawberry and blueberry varieties. We are now down to the "homestyle flavor" and that just doesn't cut it with my kids.

At first, I thought my grocer was once again getting rid of a product my family enjoys. My kids have never recovered from the loss of frozen cinnamon raisin Big Soft Pretzels. I'm still mourning the loss of Folger's Cafe Latte instant coffee drink. Thank you, Mr. Grocer, for no longer enabling our addictions, in order to give more shelf space to better selling products.

In my ignorance, I tried a few other grocery chains in the area and old, reliable Target. No Eggo's. I'm like, "WTF Kellogg's?? Your marketing geniuses have decided to take away an American breakfast staple??" We will NOT go back to making our own waffles. That is just too much work. We have blogs to read every morning. We don't have time for homemade anything.

Then today, I heard on the radio about the shortage. There was relief to know that Eggo's will be back. There was more distress to learn that although we can send people to the moon, Eggo waffles will not be back into circulation until the middle of 2010.

Meanwhile, I'm accepting any recommendations you have for breakfast items for the kids that don't involve anything other than toasters or microwaves. It will be a sad holiday season when all we have are TJFarms Buttermilk Waffles.

  2. I'm so glad I didn't start back up on the blueberry variety. That would have blown.

  3. My sister in law lives in Atlanta and share some pictures of her old apartment complex (that she moved out of a month prior). The whole thing was under water. Dang.

  4. Who knew the Flood of the Millenium in the South could have repercussions all the way in Yankee-town. lol

How 'bout cinnamon toast? Pop the bread into the toaster, then smear with butter or margarine of your choice and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon powder.
    Or cheese toast.
    Or pop-tarts.
    Or breakfast bars.
    Or breakfast burritos.
    Or microwave-able quiche.
    Or those microwave b'fast sandwiches.

    Ok, I'm outta ideas.
Hope your waffles come back soon. =)

  5. Ah, jeez - both Georgia and Tennessee have been implicated? I'm embarrassed on behalf of two places I call home.

  6. Sorry to hear about the Eggo shortage...

Was that too weird and shallow?? :D

Think of it as a culinary adventure. Maybe your family will be forced to find a new favorite, that given a bit of time, they will wonder how they ever lived without it.

Just try and make sure that whatever it is is manufactured in a Natural-Disaster-Free area. lol

  7. Des - I feel your pain and it's probably worth a new thread to talk about food items that we miss!

Mama - You beat the addiction? Good for you!

Russ - Glad she got out in time!

LB - Those are all great suggestions. My son has been eating lots of bars and pop tarts. Middle Child likes the toaster strudels, but those things have zero nutrition!

Agent - What's surprising is that Kellogg's doesn't have a waffle plant in Michigan!

Flutter - Well, my kids are definitely weird and shallow, so thanks for the sympathy - LOL!

  8. Just a thought....
You could dig out the waffle iron and mix up a batch of Bisquick and start cooking up a batch. BTW what time should I come by, I'll bring my own syrup...

  9. Heh. You know what is funny is I just said something similar to Hubby the other day... He was bringing home the store brand, and I just made a comment about it, because "breakfast food" was always something he bought name brand of... now hearing through the grapevine of the lack of Eggo's... its kind funny. =) Thanks for sharing!!
