I married someone who reaaallllyyy loves Christmas. He told me this when we were first dating, so I was forewarned. Through the years, he's smuggled live trees into apartments, taken us to some fabulous Christmas productions, and spent too much money on gifts. I've come to accept it. But yesterday, Tree #7 arrived at our house. I have no idea how many trees most people have, but I'm going to guess that seven trees is overkill? And that's not counting my ceramic tree I inherited from my grandma. Here's what's around Cocotte's place:

We call this our Advent Tree. The ornaments came from a German advent calendar we received our first year of marriage. The kids used to put on one ornament a day, starting December 1st. Now they are too lazy/don't care, so one of them just decorates the entire tree when we get it out.

Here's our Snoopy Tree. My parents give each grandchild a Snoopy ornament every Christmas. I love anything Charlie Brown, so I have to say, this is my favorite tree.

At our old church, every child who participated in the Christmas pageant would receive a cross stitched ornament made by the "church ladies." A few of those ornaments I designed myself and many, many hours go into their creation.
Here's our actual real tree. We cut a live tree down every year. As you can see, this is not going to win any awards. Our family tradition (began in 1984, our first Christmas together while dating), is to pick out a new ornament for that year. We put the year on the back. Each of our children get to chose an ornament each year as well. Some years, the ornaments are chosen while on vacation. We have some neat ones from Hershey, PA, Williamsburg, Napa Valley and Yellowstone. Multiply 25 years together, plus three kids ranging in ages from 15-20 and that's a lot of miscellaneous ornaments!
Here's middle child's tree. She usually starts bugging me to get the tree out before Thanksgiving. It's hard to see, but there are tiny ornaments (purchased from American Girl), and of course, the SpongeBob tree topper.
Well, here it is. Our latest addition. Husband received a box of old wooden ornaments from his aunt, who's been cleaning out his grandmother's house. You can't let those ornaments go to waste, hence, the new tree.
And this little display warms my heart. My 15 year old son set this up in his room. I keep waiting for the Christmas when he doesn't care anymore whether I get out his tree. Thankfully, it hasn't happened yet. He even pulled out those stuffed animals from his storage closet.
This will probably be my last post in 2009, so MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone. May the Lord richly bless you in the coming year!

P.S. If you click on each tree, you can see the ornaments close up.
ReplyDeleteSeven Christmas trees.
ReplyDeleteMy jaw is officially on the floor.
And the Spongebob tree-topper. . .
I have no words. . .

The 'traditional Catholic' approach (which hardly anybody actually does, but hey, it's 'traditional') is more focused on Advent in the weeks before Christmas, so we usually don't put our tree up until a week or so before Christmas (we'd wait 'til Christmas Eve if we could, but a week before is about as late as the tree-sellers will go. . .). But then, we'll leave it up 'til Epiphany, when most of our neighbors have theirs on the curb the 26th. . .
And rich blessings to you and your family, as well.
See you next year!
Cocotte- I wondered what happened to you girl, nice to see your back!
ReplyDeleteI heart the snoopy ornaments, they brings back lots of memories for me.
Have a wonderful, restful holiday with your family. See ya in 2010!
Seven trees is hardcore, lady! I love your Charlie Brown tree, but they're all adorable.
ReplyDeleteWe have one GIGANTIC, MAMMOTH tree in our family room. It is huge, and eats up so much space. When we lived in our first house, we had a huge living room, so we'd put it in a corner and be all, "Oh, hey, is that a tree over there? Let's ballroom dance! There's so much room! Weeee!" Now, not so much. We have to move furniture and chart a plan!
Enjoy your holidays with your family! Merry Christmas!
Overkill comes to mind. I do my best vanishing act every year when the Christmas tree goes up and comes down. Some years I'm better at it than others.
ReplyDeleteBut seven (7?!) frickin' trees! Too much.
Previous best I saw was four. One all white. One all gold. One traditional (live). One traditional (artificial).
And I thought that was too much.
I love it. You guys are following your hearts. And I like having trees up throughout December.
ReplyDelete(My 16 year old took some time to decorate his room with garland and llights and a little tree this year, so he hasn't out grown it either. This moring he said, "16 more days!")
how sweet. i really like the idea of the advent tree. i just have 2. a little skinny 4 ft one i put in the foyer and the big family tree which has been standing naked in my living room for the last 4 days.
ReplyDeleteSigh. . .
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky if I get up just one tree. Even luckier if I get it decorated.
Sigh. . .
My word ver: splapp
Definition: The sound my head made hitting my desk when I read that you have seven Christmas trees.
Des - Who doesn't like Spongebob?
ReplyDeleteJody - Same to you! Wasn't Charles Shulz an amazing man?
FADKOG - Oh, I understand....before our addition, we put the tree in the living room and you could barely get around it. But the family room spot where it is now would have taken up 50% of the room's previous size.
Russ - I like themed trees and love the monochromatic ones. The kids decorate all of ours while I stay in the kitchen and make food. I don't enjoy decorating.
Agent - Yes! With this much work, the trees have to be up for 5 weeks! Glad to hear your son still likes to decorate!
Lime - I like those skinny trees for foyers. I don't have a foyer, so that's the only reason we don't have 8 trees!
Truey - Get busy, girl! Doesn't your son keep asking about the tree?
I just had to tell you I just purchased chocolate chip waffles, they are available again!! I thought you might like to know :O)
ReplyDeleteI had my own as a kid too. I used to get so excited setting it up by myself.
ReplyDeleteWhere are your Toilet Trees? You know, the ones in each bathroom?
Jody - I'm so excited to hear that you found chocolate chip waffles! I will be on the lookout!
ReplyDeleteTrooper - Our bathrooms are very small, or I'm certain Husband would have thought of that.
Your husband is in need of Christmas Tree Anonymous. Get him help soon....
ReplyDeleteI love Christmas, but 7 trees? Really?
ReplyDeletethat sounds like a lot of work!
Mike - It's a hobby, I guess!
ReplyDeleteBogart - Believe it or not, I don't decorate a one!
That is an epic Christmas display you guys have going on there, and good for you! If you enjoy something, work it for everything it's worth I say.
