This morning, I received the following mass e-mail from Husband to members of our immediate family:Let's all say a prayer for Bert Blyleven today so he gets into the Baseball Hall of Fame so I will have a signed baseball of a hall of famer.

Alas, if any prayers were said, they did not work. Bert missed it by 5 votes. Better luck next year, honey.
Background Story: As a college student, Husband was an assistant golf pro at a country club. One day, he offered a free golf cart to a MLB umpire and the umpire told him he'd get him a signed baseball from any player playing at the game that night. Husband chose the only good player that the Indians had that year and the umpire, true to his word, came back the next day to golf and give my husband the baseball.
Bummer. Maybe next year.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Cocotte!
Oh, too bad. I have a baseball signed in the '70's by one of the Atlanta Braves, Vic Correll, I believe his name was, even though I have never been a fan. I have no memory of why he was signing a basball for me.
ReplyDeleteWell, the good news is, nobody's ever gotten that high a percentage of the vote and NOT gotten in eventually. So, maybe next year. . .
ReplyDeleteI've got an Al Kaline ball, which I keep in a plastic display case on my desk. . .
And Happy New Year! Good to see you back in the 'hood. . .
Way too cool! And he signed right on the money spot! That's awesome.
ReplyDeleteHe'll be in next year for sure.
I wonder what that ball would have been worth on ebay if he had made it into the Hall of Fame???
ReplyDeleteThat is a great story, but as a baseball guy, I am not happy that Bert is probably going to get in next year...at least now I will have a reason to be happy. Thanks for providing that. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have a baseball signed by Whitey Herzog. My dad got one for my brother and one for me for Christmas one year. Whitey signed them for Dad because Dad gives him peaches from his peach trees most summers.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, as a diehard Cubs fan I'm not all that impressed by a Whitey Herzog baseball. I keep it though because I know it's probably worth something.
Close, so close! Cool story though.
ReplyDeleteMy responsive message would have been, "Who?"
ReplyDeletewhose autograph did he request on the ball?
ReplyDeleteZip - Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAgent - You're about as big of a fan as I am.
Craig - Yup, Husband is hoping for next year. And he's got his 2 autographed balls in plastic cases as well.
Matt - A boy can dream, can't he?
Jody - LOL....that's what one of my kids asked!
Bogart - No love for the Bert?
True - That's a good story about your Dad!
Russ - Finally, a sports story from me!
Laggin - LOL...well, at least I'd heard of him, growing up in this area.
Lime - Bert B. - the one who ALMOST made it into the Hall of Fame last week. He used to play for the Indians.
Wow... best wishes for next year, then!!
