More Reasons To Hate Snow

What a depressing weekend for us, here on the Northcoast of Nowhere. The storm that wasn't supposed to touch our county managed to drop 14 inches of the dreaded white stuff in less than 12 hours. Friday night, Middle Child was singing with the Women's Concert Choir at a show in town. The drive home was truly frightening. There was already about 5 inches on the ground and not a snow plow in sight. We have a steep hill on the way home, and I was fish tailing it in the van the entire drive up. At the top of the hill is an overpass over the interstate. There is nothing scarier than to feel as though you are losing control of your vehicle near a bridge, while seeing headlights coming your way in the opposite direction. I was doing some serious praying aloud during those few minutes of terror. I probably permanently scarred my child. Hmmm....what's worse, listening to your mom swearing up a storm or praying, when you are sitting helplessly in the backseat?

Saturday was not an improvement for Middle Child. The state solo and ensemble contest that she had prepared for for over three months was canceled, due to the weather. She had memorized 'Per la gloria d'adorarvi' in Italian and was prepared to be judged. Countless hours were spent the last few weeks getting the dynamics down pat. Not to mention the amount of money I spent on vocal coaching. All for nothing. The event will not be rescheduled.
We are an angry lot right now.

  1. I LOVE snow. . .

Except for that whole driving thing; driving in snow sucks. . .

  2. Thank goodness you made it home safely. My son's retreat got cancelled at the last minute because of the snow in the mountains where they'd be travelling. He was really disappointed.

  3. I wanted to go right back into the garage today when I slid down the drive in the minivan. We're getting another 9 inches on top of the 15-20 already on the ground, plus lots of wind tomorrow. I am so done with this. At least school wasn't called off today. We're close to having no summer vacation if it gets called tomorrow!

  4. I feel your pain. My sister did some vocal stuff in high school.

  5. Craig - Not sure what there is to love?

Agent - It's frustrating when your life is being controlled by the weather.

FADKOG -You have been getting some serious slamming this winter. We've only had 1 snow day so far, but I think we'll be getting one tomorrow.

Russ - Thanks for the sympathy.

  6. It's probably a 'Stockholm Syndrome' thing from my Up North upbringing. You know - how hostages develop sympathy for their captors. . .

    ;)

Nah; I love the snowball fights, building snow forts, skating/skiing, the way the world looks when everything is covered with a thick white blanket, and how it gets so muffled/quiet. . .

Then there was the time we got a massive snowfall, and I finally got home from work, to find a ladder leaned up against the side of the garage, next to where my kids had built a snowpile against the wall, and were sledding off the roof. . .

But then the next day, I have to drive in it; then it sucks. . .

  7. You enjoying the snow we're getting now? We just got 7 inches and it's not looking like it's stopping.

I like snow, but I'm getting over it quickly.

  8. Matt - We got slammed yesterday afternoon, but then it stopped overnight. Kids are in school, unhappily, while it has started coming down again.

  11. I'm starting an official petition to remove winter from the seasonal calendar. Just don't see the point. I mean, I could handle a couple months of it. But November to March is just taking things TOO FAR.

    Glad you got home safe!

  12. Yikes! I don't even know you and I feel for you. I've never had to live with snow (I only use it for playtime), but I've got a lot of respect for those that do. Glad to hear you made it home, and jeez, bummer about that recital.

  13. Flutter - I'm to the point where I'd be happy to never see another white Christmas.....

Michael - Thank you and thanks for stopping by!!!!!

  14. I love snow and I love driving in snow. But then again, I make sure every vehicle either has 4 wheel drive or good snow tires.

The only thing I hate about it is the other drivers who seem to be, as a rule, unprepared and unpracticed in the art. Such is life.

Then there's ice, but that's an entirely different subject ...
