The Phantom Lopper

First, there was the mystery of the bagel throwing maniac in our neighborhood (it's still happening, by the way)...........now this.

Early this fall, as I left at 6:45 am to drive my kids to school (thank you, school levy failure), I noticed a small branch from our rose of sharon tree lying in the middle of the sidewalk. When I got home, I picked it up to throw it away and noticed that it wasn't a branch that had merely snapped off the tree. No, this was a clean cut. I thought that was mighty strange, so I looked down at my neighbors on both sides, and sure enough, one or two branches were lying on the sidewalk in front of their houses too. I couldn't help myself, I had to go pick up the branches to check for signs of cutting. Yup, there they were.

Using my novice investigative skills, I deduced that the cutting took place between 8 pm (when I pulled in the driveway the previous night, and I would have noticed the branch there) and 6:45 am. I decided to take a walk around the neighborhood and found more branches on sidewalks and tree lawns on our street and a few side streets off of our street. Someone had been a busy beaver overnight!

I mentioned this to my neighbors and they said, "Oh, the city probably came through here and trimmed the trees." Um, I don't think so. 1)The city wouldn't be spending the money to trim trees on our property; 2)Why would they do it in the dark?; 3)We'd have heard the noise if a city truck was on our street, believe me.

A few days later, I took a different route from my normal walking path and discovered more branches on more sidewalks. Our phantom lopper had struck again! On the one hand, I think it's pretty ballsy to cut down branches from someone else's trees, but I'm also grateful because there was one tree in particular that was difficult to get around in the neighborhood, and now, I have a clear path.

  1. And were the lopped branches done in a way that didn't damage the health or aesthetics of the trees? Because I'd be steaming if someone did that on my property without permission.

  2. Very interesting indeed...an odd kind of vandalism...

  3. If you find him/her, send them my way! There are a bunch of crepe myrtles that need some heavy pruning on my nightly walk.

  4. This is, quite possibly, the most bizarre thing I've heard of in a very long time. I can't even imagine what gets into a person to do something odd like this!

(with the snow inevitably about to fall, though, I wish I could find a vandal interested in clearing my drive!)

  5. I'm wondering if it's a case of some weird kind of vigilante tree-trimming. You noted that one of the lopped limbs was obstructing the sidewalk. . .

Other than that, I'm on board with the consensus that this is bizarre in the extreme. And yes, I'd be steamed if someone did it to one of my bushes, too. . .

  6. A Vigilante Tree Lopper, maybe the limbs that were blocking the sidewalk was cut by someone who had complained about it and got so fed up that they took it upon themselves to cut it, now knowing that the finger would be pointed in their direction under the cover of darkness they randomly cut branches all over the neighborhood to throw everyone off of their track.

Strange indeed and yes I'd be ticked if they were cutting on any of mine.

  7. Really odd, but you're right, that's not the city, not in the dark & on private property. Which would piss me off as well, no matter who's doing it.

  8. Agent - Our tree was fine. The Lopper only took off a small branch about 12 inches long. It's a mature rose of sharon.

Cap - It was disturbing when I first found it.

Russ - Haha. Those are the sorts of trees that the Lopper pruned.

FADKOG - I have seen people in our neighborhood get so aggravated by those who don't clear their sidewalks, that they will just snowblow it themselves.

Craig - I'm certain that's what it is, although our tree couldn't possibly have bothered anyone. I think the Lopper just went a little overboard.

Jimmy - There were a few trees that really did need trimming. You could be right that the person had complained so much, they felt the need to cover their tracks and go do other streets as well.

Sailor - My kids, as always, suggested a hidden video camera!

  11. very weird indeed. i'd tend to think it was the municipality too but i'd think there'd have been some sort of notice.
