My kids love this show. Me? Not so much. As a parent, it horrifies me to think of the many terrible diseases and conditions that could befall my children. Let alone myself.Over the years, we've suffered our share of strange illnesses. Staph infections in a newborn, a kindergartner with mono, strep that would not go away in a second grader. I've taken my kids to cardiologists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, ENT's, opthamologists, psychologists, etc. Three kids with various oddities over the past 21 years of parenthood. Fortunately, most of the issues were resolved without too many complications and they are healthy teens and 20-somethings.
So, when my son developed a rash on Christmas Eve day, I didn't panic at first, even though it was the size of a fist and blistering. The next day, it was worse and had spread up his leg. I won't lie to you - it was disturbing and disgusting. Flesh-eating bacteria came to mind. And it being a holiday and then the weekend wasn't helping my panic mode.
On Monday, I called the dermatologist, but there was an eight day wait, so instead, I got him a same day appointment at the pediatrician. By this point, he was limping, as the rash was on the back of his knee, making it painful to bend his leg.
Any guesses as to the mystery illness? Well, it was certainly not something that ever crossed my mind. Shingles! My 16 year old managed to develop shingles! How wack is that? The doctor said of the hundreds of patients she sees per year, she only comes across one or two that get it. Oddly enough, my son had the most mild case of chicken pox at age five months, having had only about eight pox on his entire body. At least we are now assured he doesn't need the vaccine.
Happy New Year..........may yours be a healthy one!
Not unheard of, but somewhat unusual. Our youngest had extremely mild pox and we wonder if she's gonna pay for that later. Guess we'll see ....
ReplyDeleteBut shingles are far worse than the pox, no doubt.
the word shingles always makes me think of matted tufts of hair and filth hanging off a dog's behind.
ReplyDeleteno need to thank me for sharing that
Shingles? Sounds like something my grandparents have :) Hope everything is okay.
ReplyDeleteShingles are awful. Sorry to hear yer boy has 'em; hopefully, he'll be feeling better sooner, rather than later. . .
ReplyDeleteX - Why do you think she'll pay later for a mild case of the pox?
ReplyDeleteJK - okaaaaaaay.....
M - Yes, it's an old folks' disease. He's doing ok, but worried about wearing jeans to school tomorrow. They aren't allowed to wear sweats to school, which is what he's been living in.
Craig - It is truly gross, and painful according to my son. Like pinpricks.
Hope he clears up really soon and this takes care of his serious illnesses for the year.
ReplyDeleteHealthy New Year to you my Friend
Lots of wicked viruses in the herpetic family. I'm sorry you guys are having to deal with it. I remember at one point in my younger son's life (around two) he had already seen, in addition to his pediatrician, an ophthalmologist, an ENT, a pulmonologist, an allergist, a neurologist, and a neurosurgeon. Harrowing times.
ReplyDeleteI'm with M@, that sounds very grandparent-ish.
ReplyDeleteIn these kinds of situations, my Mother likes to say "God is punishing you for thinking evil thoughts." (She's basically an atheist).
ReplyDeleteI'd either go with that (hey, he's a 16-year-old boy!), or it's fate telling him to become a roofer.
Anyway, I hope he feels better soon.
Jimmy - Thanks; he's making progress!
ReplyDeleteAgent - Your son sounds like my Middle Child. All those specialists were for her. We managed to shed most of them by age 12 though!
Russ - Fortunately, he doesn't look or act like a grandpa!
WD - Just add it to your list of worries......
I was so going to say Shingles!
ReplyDeleteHA! Diagnosised!
(Dang those hurt)
They say that the milder the case of pox, the higher the chances of shingles. Not sure if it's really true but that's what the docs here say.
ReplyDeleteegads! whoda thunk it! well i hope he's feeling better soon since i hear shingles can linger and be quite painful.
