A Song That Makes You Sad
This one depresses the heck out of me!

A Song That Reminds Me Of Someone
Back in college, I had a boyfriend who treated me like a princess, to the point of it being a bit overboard. But his mood swings and general unhappiness with life was something I could not deal with. After about 5 months, I broke up with him, but he continued to pursue me, even after he graduated a few months later and got a job in Florida. I would receive random postcards with bizarre messages, such as "I'm having the time of my life drinking and f*cking down here!" Out of guilt, I would occasionally respond, which was probably a mistake. After I got married, I received a final postcard from him that said he had joined the army so that he could jump out of planes. I have no idea what happened to him, but everytime I hear this song, it reminds me of him. This song came out right around the time we first started dating and he would play the album when we were in his apartment because he really liked it. I hope he found happiness.
A Song That Reminds Me Of A Place
In the summer of 1979, my family went to Niagara Falls and Canada. While in Toronto, we attended the Canadian National Exposition and stayed at a motel near the fairgrounds. There was some sort of outdoor roller rink that played pop music very loud and we had to listen to it till the wee hours of the morning. This song was very popular at the time we probably heard it a dozen times that night. The link is stuck and I always think back to the CNE whenever I hear this song and how I wish I had been at the roller rink instead of being stuck in a motel room with my parents!
"Brick" is such a melancholy song.
ReplyDeleteSuper strange postcard experience... I think you may have dodged a bullet there. Be glad it was only postcards, dude sounds a little bit unbalanced. *cringe*
I love your rollerskating story (even though you didn't get to go, it sounds like it was a cool scene!) and also love My Sharona. I only realized a few years back that it actually had a bit of a naughty/nasty vibe in the lyrics. I imagine it was a bit scandalous back when it hit the charts.
the guy is probably sending in postcards to post secret
ReplyDeleteI bet you've read one
That postcard is Nature's way of letting you know how glad you are that you didn't marry that guy. . .
ReplyDeleteAnd listen, 'My Sharona' is prominently featured in 'Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs'. . .
Just sayin'. . .
(That's just for dissin' on Bob Seger. . .) ;)
Flutter - At my age, I was probably oblivious to the lyrics. It seemed so 'modern' back then!
ReplyDeleteJK - I don't know what Post Secret is??
Craig - I didn't say I actually liked the song, just that it reminded me of Toronto! It is sort of annoying to listen to now, but I did like it back in the day.
I'm going to skip the depressing one. My Sharona, although it has ridiculous lyrics, is a great dance (or, in that case, skate) song.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing how a song will take you to back to another time and immediately make you feel happy, sad, or melancholy?
ReplyDeleteLOVED hearing My Sharona again! What a great beat!
I too use to go rollerskating when a kid, but I can't remember what they played. Probably something from Motown!
Hope you're having a FAB Saturday!
Agent - But the sad song is also a beautiful one!
ReplyDeleteRon - I love it when a song comes on the radio that I haven't heard in a decade or so. Really takes you back then! And Motown is sooo sexy!
I'm waaay late on commenting here, but I just had to say something about "Brick." Ben Folds was always one of my favorite artists back in the '90s, and that song is so catchy yet sooooo sad.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of many other hit songs that were written about getting an abortion, that's for sure.
