The following random items are things I've never understood the appeal of. Maybe you also don't understand their popularity and would like to join me in making fun of them..........or quite possibly, you actually do like them and could explain them to me. In that case, thank you for your patience.
Here's the one I really don't get..........Flight of the Conchords. They seem very popular all over the internet. Tons of hits on youtube and guest spots on late night shows. People have sent me their videos, implying it's the funniest thing they've ever watched. I don't get it AT ALL. I guess I just have a different sort of humor? The daily one liners I get on Facebook from the Colbert Report crack me up. But these videos do nothing for me.
I don't know about where you live, but here along the Northcoast, women of all ages seem to love these handbags, duffel bags, beach bags and wallets. They are even popular among teens, although I suspect it's due to the high price because seriously, aren't these ugly? The prints are just an attack on my senses. And the quilted quality reminds me of something on grandma's bed. No thank you! I'd rather carry my books in the freebie from my insurance company than one of these.
I suspect I'll get a lot of disagreement for this one, but red velvet cake? I will admit it looks and sounds good. But the flavor? It's like a tease......a 'hint' of chocolate? Just give me a deep, dark chocolate cake and be done with it. If I'm going to consume 700 calories, I want some real flavor. Sorry, Paula Deen!
Hi Bijoux,
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess that when you are an expat, you miss a lot of what's been going on back home... But, really a problem here?
Number 1- I don't want a bag like that! Hey, I can have "French chic" :)
Number 2- I don't know; I never tasted it...
Number 3- I don't need it it. It didn't crack me up, either..
Have a great day! I am glad that you enjoyed my blog today; you are the queen of the day :)
" although I suspect it's due to the high price because seriously, aren't these ugly? The prints are just an attack on my senses. And the quilted quality reminds me of something on grandma's bed. No thank you!"
ReplyDeleteHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! I so agree! Too much sensory overload. When I lived in Florida I saw these bags more so than here in the north east. However, I do see them now and then - especially during the summer months.
"Just give me a deep, dark chocolate cake and be done with it. If I'm going to consume 700 calories, I want some real flavor."
THANK YOU!!! Never liked red velvet cake. I prefer dark chocolate all the way!
And the music video? OMG....I don't get it at ALL either. In fact, I found it irritating!
Oh well....to each his own, I guess?
Have a great day, dear lady!
Well, you know, I've always preferred something more like 'simple, yet elegant' in my handbags. . .
ReplyDelete'Course, I don't do the cake thing much anymore, but the 'red velvet' thing always struck me as a tad bit oversold. . .
And I'm sorry, but I thought the video clip was hilarious. Ironic, dontchaknow. . . ;)
Oh dear...here we differ dear, Bijoux. Well, here and on Willa Cather! However, I will give you:
ReplyDelete1. The majority of the prints are awful. There are a few I truly like.
2. Being a Valentine-ish baby, my birthday cakes were always red velvet, so it holds a special place in my heart. Having said that, like carrot cake, I find little red velvet that matches the old family recipe and, as a result, rarely eat it anywhere else.
3. Never heard them. (I hope this redeems me a bit.) :)
Barb - I suspect the handbags and cake are much better in France!!! Thanks for returning and naming me queen!
ReplyDeleteRon - Maybe you saw those bags in Florida so much because it's populated by seniors?? LOL....I appreciate your comments, as always. Cracked me up that you didn't like any of it either.
Craig - Well, I wasn't sure my male readers would care much about the handbags, but I had to mention them as I think they are hideous! I have no idea what you see in the video!
Leslie - Ok, I'm glad you admitted to liking the cake. I figured someone would say, 'well, you should taste my family recipe'....so....is it supposed to be chocolate lite or is there some key ingredient I just don't taste?
Well, that's kinda the way it goes with ironic humor - you either like it, or you don't. And just because you like some ironic humor, doesn't mean that you'll like all of it. And when you don't like it, yours is the typical reaction - 'what's funny about that?'
ReplyDeleteSo - if it strikes me as funny, but you not at all, that's just consistent with how ironic humor plays. . .
Yeah. . . I'm sure that's it. . .
vera bradley does nothing for me but i do love red velvet cake and business time is my absolute fave FOC song. cracks me up every time.
ReplyDeleteto each his own.
Item 1: I don't get them either. Jasper's wife likes them and we both mock her about it.
ReplyDeleteItem 2: I think it is the icing. That's what I like about it. Give me a chocolate cake. The darker the better. Flour-less if you please.
Item 3: Business time is funny, but the other sketches I've seen of theirs have done nothing for me.
Queenie and the darlings just love those, um, hand-quilts. Blech.
ReplyDeleteThey love red velvet. I don't hate it but it wouldn't be on my hit-list. Though our red velvet wedding cake was eh.
Craig - Thanks for trying to explain it!
ReplyDeleteLime - Yes, apparently it's FOC most popular. That's why I chose it, because even then, still not funny.
Russ - I'd feel sorry for Jasper's wife, but I truly think they are god awful, so it's hard for my to empathize.
X - I can't believe you had a red velvet wedding cake. Isn't that a southern tradition or something? Is Queenie from the south?
Nope, Queenie has lived in this same are her entire life. Her mother was from the D.C./Virginia area but I have no idea why she wanted that other than she had had it once and fell in love with the idea ....
ReplyDelete.... I do know that it was a fad in this area somewhere in the early '70s.
Those purses are flat out ugly. Garish, even. But I've noticed lots of women carry huge multi-colored purses around. I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteRed velvet cake - meh. Chocolate for me, too.
But not only do I like the Flight of the Conchords songs, "Business Time" is my favorite. It's funny because there's truth in it. And I love when someone is willing to make themselves look silly like that.
I don't like those bags either
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people are ooohing and ahhhing over red velvet because they feel they have too
give me real chocolate any day
OK, so I finally got some time to watch the video and I'm with Craig, that is hilarious.
ReplyDeleteAnd, well, some of my experience (of a dubious nature) would lead me to call this iconic humor, though ironic I suppose works as well. I would guess that about 15% of the married/living together society lives this 'act' on a weekly basis. 'Cause you know what Wednesday means!!
Agent - Garish is a great adjective for those things! I'm thinking that maybe I don't like the video because stereotypes tend to annoy me.
ReplyDeleteDianne - You are probably right about the red velvet. Similar to people paying $4 for one cupcake, because it has a fancy name.
X - Thanks for stopping back and attempting to explain it.
