For decades, we had a normal ice cream truck come through here every summer. One that played, 'Do Your Ears Hang Low?' or some other unassuming song. My only complaint was that it came through around 5 pm, just in time for dinner, when the kids are hungry and cranky. Now that my kids are grown, I am constantly assaulted on a daily basis by this new intruder. I don't live in Brooklyn, but picture this in a quiet, tree-lined, suburban neighborhood.
The first time I heard it, it gave me quite a scare. Like, is God a Woman, giving me a sarcastic-where-the-hell-have-you-been? Even more fun is when you are taking a walk in the 'hood and the damn truck follows you around every corner. Sadistic novelty ice cream peddler!

Ours does that too and the "hello?!?" pisses me off every time :)
ReplyDeleteOMG...this was faaaaaaaaaabulous!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, yes...I do remember the song, "Do Your Ears Hang Low....Do They Wobble To And Fro..."
In fact, I sang that song at work one time and everyone looked at me, like..."What the hell is that?!?!"
So it's great to know that someone else remembers it - thank you!
And holy cow....I can't remember the last time a saw or heard an ice cream truck. When I was a kid they were called the Good Humor Man Trucks!
But, you're right...the sound of the at woman's HELLO is very scary. Like...is God a Woman?
HA!
P.S. You're not going to believe this, but I just walked in from getting myself a HUGE chocolate chip ice cream cone - I swear!
M - The fact that is pisses you off as much as me has given me quite a chuckle. Not sure why!
ReplyDeleteRon - How can anyone not know the ear song?? Even my kids know it! Glad you were able to indulge in some ice cream without annoying sound effects and voices!
Working at Huuge Inc a couple of the local trucks got flagged down by someone who, well, didn't need treats so much and were convinced to stop by every week.Thursday afternoon. On the condition that they shut off the noise when they entered the parking lot.
ReplyDeleteWas astounding to me how serious folks took it. They'd drag all their friends out so they wouldn't have to go alone. They'd send spam IMs to everyone in the building. They'd take an hour or so break in the mean time, arranged by having the trucks come an hour apart.
The lines were just amazing. Kids reliving their childhoods...... :-)
I've heard 'Three Blind Mice', 'The Yellow Rose of Texas', 'Pop Goes the Weasel' and probably a couple others besides.
ReplyDeleteJen actually managed to deflect our kids for a couple years by calling it the 'Music Truck' - "isn't it nice of the truck to come by and play music for us?" But of course, once the other kids show up with ice cream, the game is up. . .
But yeah - the 'Hello?' is uber-annoying. . . Never heard that before. . .
X - That reminds me of the time some brilliant room mothers decided to hire an ice cream truck to come to the end of the year party at the school. And the rest of the classes stood there wondering WTH their ice cream treats were.
ReplyDeleteCraig - Would you believe as I type this, I am hearing the damned 'HELLO?' driving by my house?
Wow - did they really have to make it a sarcastic "hello"? I can just hear it saying,"What- ever."
ReplyDeleteWow. Makes me extra glad we don't have an ice cream truck.
ReplyDeleteDid love them as a kid though!
Agent - It truly is a bizarre voice!
ReplyDeleteRhonda - Be glad!
that would drive me freakin nuts
