I thought I'd update you on the housing situation:
After 14 separate showings in about 20 days, we got our first offer and it was a good one. Unfortunately, we had to turn it down, as we have no where to go and no potential place to go.............bottom line is, we didn't think we'd have this much interest in our house. A lot of houses sit around here for 9 months before being sold. I guess a combination of the right price point and the fact that I have good taste in decorating is generating a lot of interest?
And isn't realtor/client feedback a hilarious notion? Some of the comments we've received: House is too big, house is too small, LOVE the backyard, backyard wouldn't work for our kids, etc., etc. As you can see, comments are pretty much useless, and only meant to irritate the seller. My favorites are comments about lack of closet and kitchen counter space............um yeah, that's why we're moving! Good luck with finding everything you want in this price range!
The real problem seems to be finding a house we like. We should have seen this coming after the last time, when it took us 15 months to find this house. I believe the trauma I suffered from that led to us staying here 21 years. Husband has limited us to one development in the town we are searching. One. Good luck to us, right?
When the offer came in last week, our realtor actually started cold calling people in the development we are interested in buying, hoping to find someone who was thinking about selling! And she found someone who is planning on putting their house up in the spring. We went and looked at it on Saturday and it was beautiful. All the bathrooms had been completely redone and they must have spent $60,000 or more on the kitchen. It was amazing. The deal breaker for us? There was a creek and a sewer pipe about 20 feet from the walk out basement. After all our water problems here, there was just no way.
And that's basically how things have been going here!

Hey! A new post from Bijoux! Check it out!
ReplyDeleteBuying/selling houses is just so much fun, ain't it?
We actually stayed in our second house a few years longer than we might have, just because the turnover from our first house to that one was so painful. We had the opposite problem, tho - we bought our new house before we sold the old house. So we ended up renting out the old house for a couple years (with a couple brief rounds of double house payments), until we could finally find a buyer. And that's a story that I should probably tell sometime, but probably won't. . .
Hang in there! Having more interest in what you're selling, than what you expected, is a problem lots of folks would like to have. . . ;)
I hate the whole process. When my ex and I sold our house before moving to where we are now, we did it without a realtor and the "feedback" came directly to us. The house was twice as big as the one I live in now (it was 2400 SF on the main floor with a 1200 SF finished basement). Had four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. A living room, dining room, den, and sunroom. I'm telling you all this to set the stage for one of the comments - it was a young woman who was pregnant for the first time with triplets. She looked around and said dismissively, "Well, I'd have to add on..."
ReplyDeleteCraig - Yeah, I shouldn't complain about it. Although you never know, that may be the only offer we get in the next year. It's a gamble, but we are not about to move twice and put all our furniture in storage. The good news is this house is paid for, so it's only insurance and taxes to worry about.
ReplyDeleteAgent - How annoying!!!! Reminds me of watching 'Property Virgins' on HGTV....they all think they should be getting hardwood floors, granite counters and stainless appliances in their first house!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to see you had posted when I got home from work this evening!!!
WOW! I can't believe how quickly your house got a GOOD offer! I'm sure it's an awesome house, so that's why!
But isn't that how it always happens? You're either able to sell your house quickly, but then can't find one to move in to. Or, you find one that you would love to move in to, but then can't sell your own home!?
But as Craig said, hang in there because most folks would love to have that problem, instead of the other way around. And I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and it will all work out at the perfect time for you!

House buying is such a waste of time and energy ... right up until you find the one.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm gonna scratch what I was gonna say next. It's a fun flippant comment, but taken another way would be just rude .... :-)
Oh well, thinking it makes me chuckle. Keep working it, I'm ure you'll find something fitting to your needs.
Wishing you luck in your hunt!
ReplyDeleteRon - Yes, I agree, it always works out in the end. Last time we were at this, we put offers on two other houses before we got this one. We were glad later that we hadn't gotten the other two, because we liked this one so much better.
ReplyDeleteXavier - I can't believe how many people have told me how much FUN they think house hunting is! I find it stressful, esp. because so much is hidden in a house and you need to get a really good inspector, which is also hard to find.
Leslie - Thank you!
Yeah, our next house hunt may just kill me out-right. Queenie has watched far too many of those un-Reality series on house hunting where all the houses they look at are just stoopid (overly expensive, overly expansive, overly ridiculous). Then again, she hates cleaning so maybe we can work that angle .... single bedroom witha combined kitchen/diningroom/livingroom anyone?
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's my ideal ...
@Xavier - sounds like you're lookin' fer one o' them one-room bungalows with a pull-down bed. . .
ReplyDeleteDid you want hot-and-cold running water with that, or do you prefer carrying and heating your own? Would flush toilets be acceptable?
;)
Hi Bijoux!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see you.
I am hoping really hard that you find the right place for you. I don't blame you for refusing that last home. You suffered too much from water problems to relive that again!!
My hubby and I also plan to be selling in the future. We will trod that rocky road, too.
Hang in there!
Barb - Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe got cold called about selling our house two weeks ago ... Naaaaah.
ReplyDeletei think you just reactivated my PTSD. eesh, sorry you have to go through the process. what if you took an offer and rented until you could find a place to buy?
ReplyDeleteCool - Everyone wants to move to the Cool neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteLime - I would never move twice. No way.
That feeling of entitlement on the part of first home buyers - the granite/stainless steel/hardwood floors thing? Big pet peeve of mine. BIG.
