Who's the Crazy One Here??

I actually agree with this picture, but honestly, sometimes I wonder if it's really me or if I've wandered into a networking black hole.  Here are some situations; you tell me:

I share a computer with Middle Child.  We have different log on names, etc.  I have no problem printing anything.  She, on the other hand, has to manually choose our printer every freaking time she wants to print something.  We've only ever had one printer hooked up to this computer, so it makes no sense.  Doesn't matter if she's printing a Word document or something from another program, it goes to a default of PDF Ready (which I don't even know what that is).  I can't tell you how many times we've both forgotten that she has this issue and she'll call me in to say the printer's not working.  And I'll waste time turning the printer on and off, only to go in and find it's on PDF Ready.  I've tried everything, going into Printer Properties and Page Set Up, but nothing works.  Arg!

My second issue is minor, but still annoying.  I'm dreading the change to facebook timeline.  A number of my friends have changed to it already, and I have the worst time on their pages now.  It's a scrolling issue.  I will use my scroll on the side, but once I let go of the little round wheel on the mouse, it automatically scrolls back up to the top of their page.  I thought it was a facebook issue and even posted a status about it, thinking I'd get a bunch of people saying, "I have the same problem!"  Nope.  It was like crickets chirping.  And my desktop is only a year old, so I can't believe it's a problem on my end.

The third issue was with a site that many of you use, SiteMeter.  I set it up on my blog when I first started and had no problems with it whatsoever.  After a while, I got bored checking it, so would forget about it for a few months at a time.  About a year ago, I went to log on and check out my activity and it would not allow me to log on.  Now, I might not be the best at remembering user names and passwords, but I was fairly certain what both were and it refused to let me log on.  I sent requests to get both sent to my inbox and discovered that I did indeed have the correct name/password.  What was wrong with me?  I even tried cutting and pasting from the e-mail and still no luck.  Finally, I sent an e-mail to customer service and they claimed they had no trouble logging on with my name/password.  I replied, asking them to assign new ones to me, but for some reason, they ignored that e-mail.  I waited another six months and started the process again with their customer service, but got the same run around.  I finally gave up and canceled the account!

Please comment that I'm not crazy!

  1. Each sign-on profile has its own "default printer". Have you set her default printer (off of the start menu - devices & printers menu option)?

No idea on the scrolling problem, sorry. I've got timeline installed and haven't had any issues at all.

Hmmm sitemeter.. if you trust me with the login info & want to email it to me, I'll dig into it more for you. But I have had no problems at all with mine. So unless you have some unusual privacy settings on your browser that it requires to work, I really don't have any idea.

  2. Me - THANK YOU! I checked and you are right. I didn't think that different users would have different printers. I mean, I'm the one who set up the computer when we got it, so how could that have even happened? It took me a while to figure out how to switch it, but I finally right clicked the correct printer and found how to set it to default printer. THANK YOU! I appreciate you trying to help on the sitemeter, but I canceled the account a while ago.

  3. Well, I was just going to suggest the same thing that Just Me shared with you, so you've already got that covered - yay!

The scrolling thing I have no idea about because I'm rarely if NEVER on FB, so I can't help you there.

I use Statcounter.com instead of Sitemeter and I love it. I've used it ever since I've been blogging and have never had any issues. So if you're looking for a new site meter, you might want to look into it.

  4. Perhaps you created her account before you installed the printer? I'm really not sure how Windows sets the defaults when a new profile is added.

But I've been my own computer tech support person since I got my first PC in 1992, so I've gotten pretty good at figuring stuff out. Glad it worked. :)

  5. Yeah, every user has to set up their own default printer.

Check out the newer Blogger stats, they have a subset of the sitemeter function. You can at least see how many have visited and when, tho I've noticed it can be inaccurate.

The scrolling thing is likely either a hardware or driver issue, the scroll wheel may be getting mis-read.

  6. P.S.- Queenie will tell you, and I can not argue, that all computers are haunted. Be careful out there. ;-)

  7. Since you asked explicitly (and were so nice about it) -

    You're not crazy.

    Hope this helps. . .

  9. Ron - I did install a new stat counter and so far, so good.

Me - Unfortunately, I became the PC pro here, by 'default,' because no one else stepped up to the plate!

X - I just don't understand why I have no problem scrolling on any other site, etc. Maddening! I will have to google it and see if anyone else has the problem.

Craig - If you are sincere, then thank you!

Lime - Hhmmm, well I did change the format on my blog a while ago. But the site name remained the same, so I wouldn't think that would make a difference. Who knows?

  10. You think I might not be sincere?!?

    You're crazy!

  11. Hmmm, have you tried some of the other browsers to see if it's particular to your favorite?

  12. You're NOT crazy!
I'm not great with computer issues so thank goodness your first commentor had it covered.
I haven't used the FB timeline yet but am not really looking forward to it because from what I read you only get a 7 day preview to hide anything you don't want seen. There are photos that I might be okay with now that maybe 6 months from now I might not be. Will they be able to be deleted later, I have no idea. And other stuff too. We'll see how it goes.

  13. You're not crazy. But it sounds like your computer might be.

Just another one of those technologies that are responsible for some major headaches, but we wouldn't know how to live without.

  14. X - I don't feel like downloading another browser, but if the problem continues, I guess I will have to :*

Chick - Fortunately, I delete anything I don't like on my wall immediately!

    Sailor - Yeah! Go me!

Flutter - Tell me about it! Waited 10 mins. behind some woman at Target who was trying to use coupons from her smartphone. Of course, cashier was having all sorts of trouble, as were the 3 people called over.

  15. So, I'm back. I wanted to check the site meter issue, which I've never had any problems with and got totally side-tracked by discovering I was no longer anonymous! Guess I should have been checking sitemeter more frequently.

I've not had a bit of trouble with FB and I converted to Timeline happily. I think it makes for a much nicer looking page. Hiding things wasn't an issue since I don't leave anything up I don't want anyway, and the only bit of work it required was picking a banner-sort of photo. No scrolling issues that I've observed. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  16. You are not crazy! I need to say I too and DREADING the facebook change to timeline. I cant stand the few friends pages that have already changed. I find it a real pain to navigate and I just like what I have already. Hopefully I warm up to it...

  17. Argh - I'm sorry, I'm a virtual idiot regards troubleshooting issues - I usually wimp out and run to my best blogger friend to make it all better (she's a graphic designer, very long-suffering, and has access to all my passwords)!

I really, really do empathise though, 'cos I KNOW the frustration when these glitches visit - hope it's all sorted out by now.

  18. Agent - Hope you got my e-mail, re: new blog! And glad my post helped you out a bit.

Vie - I find the constant changes aggravating because they never seem like improvements. I had no trouble uploading and changing profile pictures years ago, but it's a pain in the ass now.

Shrinky - I'll probably spend some time googling the FB scrolling issue and see if I can come up with anything.

  19. I forgot I even had sitemeter attached to my blog. I haven't checked in in...years, maybe? I wonder if I can even remember my log in information to see if people are still finding my blogs by searching for things like 'monkeys with boners' and other less desirable combinations of words!
