Backyard Bambi

Nope, this is not a post about a porn movie!

On Memorial Day, my oldest spied what appeared to be a newborn fawn in our backyard, approximately two yards from our deck.  We have had fawns lie in our backyard before, but not that close to the house.  I grabbed my camera and was amazed at how close I was able to get to him/her.

Peek A Boo!

He put his head down whenever I approached.

We spent a good part of the morning looking out the window, checking to see if he/she was still there.  By about 1 pm, it was close to 94 degrees and the sun was beating down right on the spot where the fawn was lying.  We didn't know if it could walk, so we were becoming concerned, especially when we noticed he was shaking.  My husband couldn't take it anymore, so he grabbed an old aluminum lawn chair and set it over top of the fawn to provide some shade.  The fawn didn't move.  As my husband was walking away, he stepped on a stick that made a loud cracking sound and as the rest of us watched from the window, the fawn stood up on wobbly legs, knocked over the lawn chair, and took off into the woods in quite a zig zag fashion!

That was upsetting, as we knew the mother would come back and not know where her baby had gone.  Equally upsetting, I had seen both a fox and a coyote on our property in the past week!  By early evening, the fawn had still not reappeared.  We kept checking every morning, hoping to see him/her again.  Three days later, we got our wish!

The fawn returned to this tree further from the house a number of times over the next week.  I even saw him/her with the mother, roaming around down by our shed.  They sure are adorable, when not eating our plants and trees.

  1. First, I love your post title and opening line!

    HILARIOUS!

And OMG...what an AMAZING experience you had. I adore deer. To me, they are the most gentle yet, powerful animals. I love their eyes because they're so full of wisdom.

AWESOME photos! And I cannot believe how close you were able to get the fawn!

So glad to hear he/she came back.

    Yes, adorable!

Have a wonderful week, my friend!

  2. A porn movie?

    (*rolling eyes*)

Wow. . . Amazing that she'd let you get that close to her; or that Mama would leave her so close to humans (and. . . you know definitively that it's a 'her'?) If it was that wobbly on its legs, it might've been REALLY freshly-born.

    VERY cool. . .

  3. Ron - No one around here particularly 'likes' deer because there are so many and they eat EVERYTHING, including flowers on the front porch. But you can't help but love the fawns. Probably one of the cutest baby animals, IMO!

Craig - My neighbor, a former metropark naturalist, told me years ago that the mothers leave their newborns alone for most of the day. The newborns lack any scent, so they don't attract predators. The mother's instinct is to keep away so as to not alert humans or predators. People think the fawns are abandoned, but that is rarely the case. We were just worried about the unusual heat and lack of shade so close to the house.

  4. "The newborns lack any scent, so they don't attract predators" How interesting - and how useful. Does that apply to other species, do you know?

  5. Nick - I really don't know, but I would guess it's the same for animals similar to deer, like elk, moose, etc.

  6. That's really cool, have witnessed something similar a couple times. Neat stuff.

And yeah, the momma was not very near but very likely she was just near enough to hear a distress call.

I've heard it and I've seen momma coma a running loaded for bear. Or, you know, whatever. Glad I wasn't in the line of fire.

  9. X - Just heard a story about a deer who kicked a dog to death in the town north of us. Animal warden said the deer had just given birth and was hormonal. True story!

Cool - Aint that the truth??

Barb - I wish they only ate leaves!!!!

  10. How adorable.

I imagine its pretty instinctive for a fawn to bolt at sudden noises so the mother must have some way of finding it.
