Trick.........Or Treat?

Traveling new routes, now that we've moved, I've noticed a few times that a school bus stops at a nearby funeral home.  I found that rather odd, as it's not an old fashioned funeral parlor, where someone lives upstairs.  I suppose a parent works there and has arranged for the bus to pick up and drop off his/her child there.  Still weird though, seeing a little kid jump off a school bus and run towards a funeral home front door

But I was really not expecting to see a sign, in the front yard of the same funeral home, advertising:

TRICK OR TREAT
Saturday 2-4 pm
Free Pumpkins to first 100 Children

For real?  I can't imagine the purpose of this promotion. Hoping for future customers?  And are the kids knocking on the caskets, hoping for someone to open the lid and give them some candy?  The whole concept is rather disturbing.

  1. I'm hoping they are just trying to be part of the community? When I was in high school and on the yearbook staff, I loved selling ads at the funeral homes because they always let us look around, even when there were bodies being prepared. Good morbid fun. Now that I'm an adult, I see it as a serious breach of confidentiality!

  2. "And are the kids knocking on the caskets, hoping for someone to open the lid and give them some candy? "

    HAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG...that was so funny!!!!!

But you're right, that sign IS rather disturbing.

Yet, just think...at least they'll already be set up for a SPOOKY and GHOSTLY Halloween Trick or Treat party!

    BOO!

Hope you're having a super weekend, my friend!

  3. I suppose it depends on where the pumpkins are stored, just imagine if they have to go into cold storage to pick them up.

  5. Sorta takin' the whole 'creepy Halloween' thing to the next level, ain't it?

  6. I hope the trick isn't a corpse emerging from one of the caskets! All a bit spooky....

  7. Agent - As a person who finds the whole 'open casket' concept morbid, I can't even imagine!

    Ron - I think I'd prefer a graveyard for a party.

Jimmy - I was also wondering where the 'pumpkin patch' was located at that party.

X - Yes, although maybe there were hopes that grams and gramps would be bringing the kids and taking business cards on the way out.

Craig - The funny part was, the sign was not indicative of anything like a 'scary' or 'creepy' party - looked like a sign you'd see at a farm!

Nick - Very creepy, for sure!

  8. I suppose people that work in the business of the dead probably don't think twice about an event like this. I wonder if they decorated a few caskets? They would have plenty in stock.
Also can you imagine some years from now one of those kids is at a funeral there and mentions, "oh I remember coming here for trick or treat"?

  9. grams and gramps? nah, the real money is in getting mom and pop to spring for it a few decades ahead of time .....

..... yes, i once knew an undertaker.

  10. Hi Bijoux,
Hummm... I just can't get the free pumpkin handout.
There is a time and place for everything. I couldn't see me doing that with a kid.

  11. Odd.

I'm just more interested in this whole "100 pumpkin" thing... that is seriously a whole lot of pumpkins!! What happens if no one comes? What will they DO with all those pumpkins?!?!

  12. Hopefully that little promotion will be outside on the lawn and the trick-or-treaters don't have to go inside.

Since we're in a small town, the funeral homes are just a normal part of the neighborhood. At the one a few blocks from me the owner lives upstairs. Must be a very interesting business. Gives the working from home concept some strange visuals.

  13. Bill - kids remember a lot, so I can see them coming back to their parents asking WHY?

    X - maybe I have a commitment phobia then!

Barb - nope, I would never be that desperate for a free event!

Flutter - I suppose they could use the leftovers as decoration inside and out till December. All the flowers probably get boring...haha

Chick - and now I wonder if the neighborhood ones decorate for Halloween and hand out candy on trick or treat night?
