Here is why I get frustrated by baking sometimes:
To be honest, I actually like baking because I love desserts. But I always manage to burn at least one sheet of cookies when I make them. Therefore, I tend to lean towards making bar cookies, just for their simplicity. And then, I get results like above. See that pretty picture from the recipe? The recipe claimed that these Nanaimo Bars are a Canadian favorite. Maybe that was my problem; I'm not from Canada.
No, Buckeyes are a favorite in these parts. And my buckeyes turn out to be more like 'chocolate clumps.' I cannot melt chocolate to save my life. As evidenced by my creation. No drizzling going to happen when your chocolate seizes up. I wish that was my only problem, but the layers just didn't seem to work out either. And this after I doubled the recipe for that white middle layer.
It's a joke in our family that if mom doesn't like the finished product, or if the recipe is deemed 'too hard' by me, I will never make it again. I warned the kids before they ate these that they would never be eating them again. Of course, they loved every bite!

Well, it looks tasty to me even if it doesn't look the way it's meant to look. So now your kids will be pestering you to keep making it? Perhaps they should try making it?
ReplyDeleteNick - No, they won't ask for it again. They know it's no use, once the recipe is in the trash.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I'm of the school that says, "Make 'em yourself then", too. but, I'd eat them no matter what they look like, I'm not fussy that way :)
ReplyDeleteBreak-and-bakes. They're the way to go And even then I always burn a batch of them. God, I hate making cookies.
ReplyDelete"Of course, they loved every bite!"
ReplyDeleteAnd I bet they did because it really doesn't matter HOW something looks, but tastes. And I bet they were YUMMY!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, my friend!

Hey Bijoux, I'm with Ron, it really doesn't matter how they look, it's the taste that matters.
ReplyDeleteMay not look like the picture but I'd eat them :)
It looks delicious though! I'm not a baker but I came from a family that enjoyed it (my mom and sister; they would make so much stuff at all the holidays). It didn't take me long (burned cookies, etc) to know that I didn't get the baking gene. I tend to buy a lot of store made things if I have to bring a dessert and thankfully hubby loves to cook so I don't even have to do that :)
ReplyDeletehave a great Sunday!
betty
Sailor - No one was complaining about them but me, so I'm not sure why I'd tell them they should make them?
ReplyDeleteAgent - I do like the premade frozen dough, esp. the fundraiser varieties like macadamian white chocolate chunk.
Ron - My kids are always excited about any treat I make. That's part of the fun for me.
Jimmy - You would make a wonderful dinner guest!
Corgi - Thanks for stopping by again! It's nice to have a spouse who enjoys cooking. Mine does all the grilling.
You know, Jen has made lots of stuff that tasted WAAAAYYY better than it looked. And I'm guessin' this was one of those, too. . .
ReplyDeleteCraig - the truth was, I didn't want to like it, but it was good. I cringe though, when I see this photo. I'm hoping Flutter stops by to comment!
ReplyDeletedon't worry so much about the look. if it tasted good that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteas for melting chocolate just a tip...you can't allow any moisture to get in the chocolate or it seizes like that. don't use a double boiler. try a heating pad under a bowl. and don't nuke. it's too easy for it to go in one second from being fine to seizing the next.
Lime - I always try the microwave and it never works. I don't own a heating pad. I don't understand how all these pictures show drizzled chocolates on goodies - how the hell are they doing that?
ReplyDeleteyeah, i should just keep mum on the whole thing. really
ReplyDeletebut you know me
ReplyDeleteQueenie is big on food looks too. makes me crazy. there's lotsa tasty doo-dads she made once and abandoned and, well, you know. whatever.
ReplyDeletei've tried going back and just making it myself next time. huge mistake i tell ya. maybe you can guess why ....
