Daddy Did A Bad, Bad Thing

In the tradition of  realistic children's fiction, such as 'Everyone Poops' and 'Mommy and Daddy Forgot How To Be Friends,' I bring you a new book for the child on your list whose Dad drinks too many Christmas ales.

Middle Child just finished a literacy class for her college major.  The class was a royal pain, the paperwork was ridiculous, and the sheer amount of work for a 3 credit class was unfathomable.  When the teacher took off points because Middle Child read a Halloween book to a preschool class two days before Halloween ("not everyone celebrates Halloween"), I acknowledged to my daughter that there was no pleasing this woman.  I wonder what her reaction to this book would be?

  1. I hope they sell that book at the bail bond offices.
    At least she didn't read,
    "Go the **** to Sleep!"

The audio version read by Samuel L. Jackson is just so touching.

  2. Logo - you are hilarious! I could have used that book for my oldest.

  3. OK. . . So you can only read books on holidays that EVERYBODY observes? And, in the spirit of pluralistic 'diversity', those would be. . .?

The teacher is not just impossible to please. . . she's a moron. . .

I think one of my kids brought home a book titled, 'The Fart Book' or something like that. . .

My kids' Daddy has never been to jail. Unless you count the times he was retrieving his kids. . .

    (*sigh*)

  4. Craig - the kicker was that the book's message was inclusion, but I guess it was too subtle!

  5. That professor sounds crazy. I bet the preschoolers loved the book.

Wow. They really do have a book on everything these days, huh?

  6. I'd be curious what kind of book read to the preschool class would have given your daughter points in the right direction; and while not everyone celebrates Halloween, the majority of kids at least know what it is or at least the word Halloween.

I actually like the concept of this book when daddy goes to jail. I think sometimes it is good to have something like this help to explain what potentially could be a very emotional time in a youngster's life in words that perhaps would escape those actually dealing with the situation. Very interesting!!

  7. Wow. That's really interesting that someone even thought to create that book.

(And "Go the Fuck to Sleep" is a personal favorite. I have the Samuel L. Jackson audio version saved on my computer.)

  8. I think sometimes the professors forget the relative "importance" of individual classes. One of my boys had a 3-credit class, and the reading *alone* was more than he had for about 1 1/2 other classes- both for more credit.

I like your choice of book though!

  9. Kat - There IS a book for everything, and I love that!

Betty - Sadly, a book like this would be helpful, I'm sure. I like the way they illustrated it with animals!

Agent - I'd enjoy paging through the book, just to see what conclusion it reaches. Maybe something like, "What your daddy does does NOT reflect on you"?

Sailor - Ever heard of myprofessor.com? I LOVE that website. Back in the day, we just had to rely on word of mouth. And I still curse an old boyfriend who told me to take an elective called 'Social Problems' because it was easy. NOT!

  10. Not being a parent, I had no idea there was now a tradition of realistic children's fiction. Presumably you can also get "Daddy Does Drugs", "Mummy Totally Invented Her Resumé" and "Daddy's Fake Insurance Claim".

  11. wow, that's quite the book there. and your daughter's teacher sounds like a complete PITA. glad she's done with the class and can move on.

  12. I've read SEVERAL of these books, like "Everyone Poops" and "The Gas We Pass" and LOVED them!

I actually think they're very good books for children because they bring up topics that no one wants to talk about and teaches children that pooping and farting are normal and natural, in a very fun and non-offensive way.

LOVE your choice of book! But if reading a book about Halloween upset the teacher, this book would probably put her over the edge - HA!

  13. Hi Bijoux,

O-M-G... I showed this to D and we just stared at it as I translated.
He said that you would never find that in France.

I came from the "Green eggs and ham" or "curious George generation" so this feels embarssing to me.

I wish your daughter a good break for Xmas and lots of ambition for her new semester!

Hugs and Merry Christmas to you

  14. Nick - It's funny, but my kids always loved the realistic fiction over stuff like Harry Potter. They like to keep it real!

Lime - It's always good to start fresh with a new semester.

Ron - This teacher was just ridiculously picky. Her assignments would sometimes take hours and be worth 5 points. And then she'd take off a half a point and give you a 4.5 It was hard for me to be the mature parent when my daughter showed me some of it!

Barb - Thank you so much!!!! It's nice in college, for her to get a month off in between semesters.
