Scary Movies

Although I had a fascination with Halloween and creating haunted houses with my friends in each others' basements as a kid, I am terrorized by horror films.  I have this distinct memory of being about nine years old, and my parents watching the beginning of a movie or police drama, where the wife is drowned by her husband in the bathtub.  I went to bed, laid awake for hours, and after finally going to sleep, awoke in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.  Ever since, I can't handle watching anything remotely scary.  I'm okay with reading books where murders take place; I just don't want the visual imprint.

Needless to say, I've never actually gone to a scary movie at the theatre.  Fortunately, my husband lost interest in those types of movies after his teen years, so he has never even bothered asking.  Early in our marriage, he did try renting a few borderline scary movies, telling me they wouldn't be that bad.  Lesson was learned when he had to escort me every time I wanted to go upstairs for the next week. The few times when he has turned the channel and 'Halloween' or worse yet, 'Chuckie' is on, I basically say to him, "You don't really want your laundry done for the next few weeks, right?"  Because there is no way in hell I'm going to be going to the basement to do laundry after that!  He goes back to channel surfing very quickly.  Works like a charm!

So, how is it that I wound up with two offspring who are obsessed with scary movies?  Eldest and Youngest have spent a month talking about 'Mama' (and when you say it, you have to whisper it in a creepy way), anxiously awaiting its release in theatres.  Today was their day, off to celebrate MLK Day with Chipotle and 'Mama.'  I told them that if they are scared of me for the next few weeks, I will have no pity!

  1. And if they ARE scared of you for the next couple weeks, the problem with that would be. . . ?

I've never been a horror-movie fan. Finally saw 'Jaws' a few years ago, and I still haven't seen 'The Exorcist'. I watched one of the 'Toxic Avenger' flicks when I was in college, but thought it was more funny than scary.

The only time Jen and I watched a 'scary' flick together, we watched 'Arachnophobia' on DVD with another couple, at their house. The other guy and I ended up laughing at the 'scary' parts (screaming spiders leaping thru the air? really?), but our wives did get extra-clingy for an hour or two, so that was all good. . . ;)

    1. I saw Jaws when it came out. I do not consider that a scary movie, more like a modern day Moby Dick. The spider movie would be more than I could handle though.

    OH...how funny!!!!

Like you, scary movies scare the crap out of me! But for some reason I LOVE watching them. Isn't that strange?

"Halloween" is one of my favorites!

And I also love one called, "When A Stranger Calls", which is about a babysitter who keeps getting crank calls from a serial killer while she's sitting for two children. Finally, after the operator traces the call, she finds out that the crank calls are coming from INSIDE the house from a phone upstairs in the attic!!!!

OH. MY. GOD....I got scared again just from TYPING that!

    HA!

    1. I totally remember that babysitter movie! There is no way I could handle that. I'd be afraid to be alone in my house for weeks. I do see the appeal in movies along those lines, but NOT in those chainsaw type movies.

  3. Sad thing is, I haven't heard of that movie, Mama. I can do some scary movies, but not others. There are some that are just ridiculously silly and then others that are downright scary. Thankfully hubby is not into them either, son is, but usually his girlfriends are too so that's a good thing. Few years back when son's ex-girlfriend was living with us for a bit (long story) but they saw Paranormal, the first one. He was supposed to sleep on the couch and she had his room, that was the deal........but I noticed that night he ended up in the room with her.......she was too scared to sleep alone :)

  4. Bijoux, I'm with you, but for a slightly different reason - when I watch movies I like to be pleasantly entertained. I like musicals, comedy, and adventure movies. Horror is not enjoyable to me. - Dave

    1. I am with you. If I read a book or watch TV, I want to be pleasantly entertained! I'm not much of a movie person because I can't sit there that long.

  5. I don't mind suspense movies, but I don't like horror movies. I especially won't watch movies that are basically about torture. I don't think that ought to be entertainment. If I watch a scary movie of any sort with the kids, I leave when anything bad is happening and they call me back when it's over.

    1. Agreed! It's very disturbing to me, those Saw movies and the like. I feel the same way about the haunted houses at Halloween. They are not about vampires and ghosts....it's all serial killer crap.

  6. There are quite a few film-types I won't watch. Anything too scary or too violent or too gruesome or too miserable. Anything that seems to set out to shock me and traumatise me as much as possible. I like a thought-provoking or perceptive film but not one that leaves me emotionally shattered.

  7. Eh, nothing horrible about horror movies. I stopped watching 'em when I couldn't stop laughing at the technical disasters that many of them are.

Really, pay close attention to things like continuity and the fringes of the frames in the pre-CGI films. It's hilarious I tell ya.

  8. My daughter has been going through a period of curiosity about these types of movies. I've been trying to find a happy middle-of-the-road with her. Give her a little bit of rope, but still enforce a little bit of standards about what she fills her mind with. At least for the next couple years... or as long as I can hold on for! :)

  9. Hi Bijoux,
I really must have had a "hard head" as Mom would say of me. Thes films would spook the daylights out of me but... I wanted to see them! I saw both Rosemary's baby and The Excorcist before 16 and manage to spook myself for days each time.

I have calmed down on such emotions since going to college and now, I will just pass on them. I don't even own horror Dvds!

    Have a nice(and calm) day :)

    1. At least the ones you watched were classics. My kids filled me in on the entire film last night. The plot actually sounded good, but I wouldn't be able to handle it.

  14. yeah, I've watched a few of the more contemporary and they actually have near as many technical mistakes .....

.... though the gore is at least plausible appearing now. But man, they STILL pre-announce the truly startling parts so bad it's hard to take it serious. You know it's coming, just not where from. Cheesy.

  15. I'm exactly the same way, except that, for me...it is anything to do with Satan or evil devil shenanigans. Even watching THE SHINING made me almost sick to my stomach.

But, the thing is...The Walking Dead is one of my favorite shows and that is more real than any scary movie I've seen.

    1. I can't handle occult stuff either. My husband is obsessed with The Walking Dead, and thanks to their constant marathons, I think I've seen every episode without ever having sat down to watch it! Thanks for stopping by!

  16. I love a good scary movie! I can't remember seeing any decent ones lately though. I saw Friday the 13th in the theater when it first came out. My dad took me to see Jaws at the our local drive-in. I was a little freaked out, maybe that darn music, and had to go to the bathroom.. alone.. since he couldn't go in with me. Actually, I don't even remember if I went or held it in. haha
I saw The Shining in the theater back in high school, on a date, and remember not quite getting it. I've watched it lots of times since then. Jack was awesome in that! Loved seeing Silence of the Lambs in the theater too. When you first see Anthony Hopkins standing in his creepy old cell... ooh, shudders!

  17. I'm so with you on this one. I HATE scary movies. My husband talked me into watching The Ring one night on HBO and I had nightmares for three days.
