After watching a parody of The Walking Dead, I can't get the little ditty, 'Dumb Ways to Die' out of my head. If you don't know this song, I warn you, do NOT look it up online. It's the song that never ends in your head.
Have you ever found random songs being played while you are in public places to be disconcerting? Like hearing a WHAM! song while standing in line at the bank? I looked around to see if anyone else thought that was a weird playlist for a financial institution, but nobody else seemed to notice. Recently, I was in the cosmetics section of a drugstore and Donovan's 'Season of the Witch' was playing. Just disturbing, especially when I'm trying to find some makeup. I'm thinking that 'It's Getting Hot In Here' would be an uncomfortable listen in a doctor's waiting room. How about any song by Usher at a family reunion?
Speaking of Nelly, last night I was in the car and his new song (Porsche/Portia?) came on the radio. I have no idea if he was singing about his car or some girl, even after hearing the lyrics. I must be getting old.
You know what I hate about school band concerts? The self-congratulatory part of the program. I don't know if other schools do this, but ours is notorious for it. Is it really necessary to thank the superintendent, school principals, school board members, school secretary who typed up the program, etc., etc.? And then ask that we applaud each one? Seriously, it takes up 15 minutes just to go through all of this each time. Must we thank these people for existing? It's not like they are in any way directly involved with the band concert. I'm happy to clap for the band directors and the students. Possibly the technical crew. THAT'S IT!
We have a local radio station whose slogan is, "We play anything!" Like this is something to be proud of? Why don't they just say, "We will play any piece of crap suggested by our listeners!" because that is pretty much what I'm hearing.
Here's what I do love.........hearing a random song from the '80's that has not been played to death. Thank you, modern radio, for ruining Tainted Love for me. Yesterday, I was excited to hear Morris Day & The Time's 'Jungle Love.' I'd upload it here, but I couldn't find the original video, so it's really not the same.
Heard any good songs lately?
" Like hearing a WHAM! song while standing in line at the bank?"
ReplyDeleteYes...like, "Wake Me Up!"
It's so funny you posted this today because we have a Mac cosmetic counter at the store I work in, and they play the BEST music over their audio system, which can be heard ALL over the department. Often times I will hear a song while working and will actually start dancing like I'm out in some nightclub. And usually that song will stay with me all day and all night; going through my head.
"I was excited to hear Morris Day & The Time's 'Jungle Love."
OMG....I LOVE that song! And of course, now I'll have it running through my head all night - HA!
Fun post!!!!!
X
Oh we oh we oh! Ha! I bet your coworkers enjoy the show, Ron!
DeleteI used to dread the school-band concert thing, for the same reason; that and here, they decided that *all* the different bands from both the middle school and high school, should perform. In the same event. With no escape if you wanted to hear your child's group, and weren't really interested in the kid's 1-5 years ahead/behind of your own, lol.
ReplyDeleteI hear a lot of good songs, all the time- thankfully, I have a huge selection of mp3 music, and subscribe to Sirius satellite as well :)
Oh boy, our school does that once a year for choir. Grades 6 - 12 performing. I could handle that, but not band! How many hours must that last?
DeleteOh, and did I mention that between EACH. AND. EVERY. DIFFERENT. GROUP. AND. SUB-GROUP... they must rearrange the stage? Can't have the full orchestra play, then x number of kids remove chairs, etc, until the smallest is left; no, it's better to start with 10 kids, then have 1000 chairs brought in (with stands etc), then remove enough to leave the 6, then bring in 30, and ON and ON and ON... gaaaah!
Deletemorris day & the time, how totally cool.
ReplyDeletenothing recent comes to mind but i can remember being appalled when i hear both a doors song and a billy idol song turned into muzak.
Yes, I've heard that sort of Muzak too.....WHO is the target audience for that?
DeleteI'm a real old-timer Bijoux but I enjoy many types of music. One of my favourite groups was/is Kenny Ball and his Jazz Men - Midnight in Moscow and Sukiyaki, and others - Dave
ReplyDeleteYour musical interests are probably much more varied and advanced than mine. I've just always enjoyed current popular music with some classical and musicals thrown in, only because I played piano for many years.
DeleteI'm so out of it these days with music; I rarely listen to any music unless it is Christian praise music or if hubby has a jazz station on, but in reality, I prefer a quiet house, yet my mom always had the radio station on when we were growing up. Hubby helped out a teacher at a middle school here with the guitar students to get their parts down for the Christmas (winter) concert. He played a solo there so I went to listen; it was agony to listen to the other performers waiting for him; kind of like waiting for your child to graduate high school in a class of over 600. I like your music randomness :)
ReplyDeletebetty
I prefer a quiet house too, but I always turn on music in the car and I'm in the car a lot everyday, so I'm able to stay on top of what's popular. My middle child has always been a big music fan. She plays keyboards and sings and watches every music competition TV show, so it's a part of my life too.
DeleteMy son is a senior, so only two more band concerts to go!
What bemuses me is when I hear a shop/supermarket etc playing what is basically a rather sad song, as if they're oblivious to the emotional content (like some Annie Lennox songs). And likewise, all the customers apparently not noticing. Apart from anything else, it really cheapens a poignant song when it's played to such an indifferent audience.
ReplyDeleteYES! You would think that a retailer would purchase appropriate canned music. I'm not sure what appropriate is for grocers, but not Annie Lennox! Sad songs don't make me hungry!
DeleteAnd now I'm wondering if this is related to your current post on people not listening? How do people not hear the music? I find it totally distracting.
'Season of the Witch'!?! It's been ages since I heard that song. I had the song "Car Wash" playing in my head the other day for some reason. (Ugh! It just came back!)
ReplyDeleteI don't know 'Dumb Ways to Die' and now I'm a little nervous about listening to it. But it's a great theme for "The Walking Dead."
And I love that "Jungle Love." Think I'll go dance with a mirror now!
I know!!! Who includes 'Season of the Witch' on a playlist? Next thing you know, we'll be listening to 'Smoke on the Water' at some rib joint!
DeleteWhen I was in jr high, our choir did a song and dance to 'Car Wash' and I still remember the hand movements! Not a bad song to have in your head.
Thanks for stopping by!
Haha! I love that you refuse to clap for anyone not directly associated with the program you are sitting through. That's awesome.
ReplyDeleteI love hearing random 80's songs too. The last one I heard recently was "Goodbye to You" by Scandal. So good. :)
Haha, yes, no fake clapping from me! You've chosen a good song and one that's not overplayed around here either.
DeleteThis is the song that never ends
ReplyDeleteyes it goes on and on my friend
some people started singing it not knowing what it was .....
Dumb ways to die
DeleteDumb ways to die
Dumb ways to diiiie
Dumb ways to die.
Driving the youngest home from school the other day, "White Rabbit" came over the radio. "Crikey mum, that's such an intense song, isn't it?" "Mnnnn.." I smiled. (Didn't like to tell her it was about being strung out high as a kite on drugs.)
ReplyDeleteSweet Sam has our local radio station on speed dial, they also play any crap any time and anywhere, for the asking - he adores it!
I had to YouTube White Rabbit. I knew the song, but never knew the name!
DeleteYes, Middle Child loves the pop music, but actually likes most anything.
I was just out with my son getting him a new shirt and in the store an old song by The Clash was playing. I had some punk luv back in the day and started to sing along. Not in a totally.embarrassing.son.goes.running.from.the.store.in.horror kind of way, but he did shop pretty quick. lol
ReplyDeleteJungle Love, oooh, I remember that goodie. My pod's playlists are all over the place. Hey, that might make for a blog post someday.
You really should blog about your playlist. I need the ideas for my iPod! Just heard 'Play that Funky Music White Boy' tonight on ride home. Husband and I sang our hearts out.
DeleteI'd forgotten all about that Morris Daly song. Found the video for it here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1nua7_the-time-jungle-love-morris-day_music#.UTFf9KHF2wA
ReplyDeleteI was in the grocery sore once and the music was the theme song for the X-Files Bizarre - stopped me dead in my tracks.
Thank you for that link! Love it! We were probably both seniors in college when that was popular. I remember the guy I dated dancing to that. Good times!
DeleteHearing X Files at the grocery store wold be disturbing!
You're welcome! I remember dancing to it at a club when I was in college. Fun music!
