I'm fortunate to live just a few miles from a national park, although many have never heard of it. Cuyahoga Valley National Park covers 33,000 acres of nature along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga, the Iroquois word meaning 'crooked river.' And surprisingly enough, it's ranked #10 in popularity amongst all the national parks (probably due to the concentration of population here, and the fact that many of us visit the park on a daily or weekly basis). However, it is a destination park for 'outsiders' in the fall, due to the brilliance of color.
Sure, it boasts two ski resorts, a scenic railroad, a historical village, an amphitheater, and an outdoor education center and camp. But what most people do when they visit is ride their bike or walk along the towpath trail. The towpath runs along the old Ohio & Erie Canalway. Whenever I'm on the trail, I can't help but hum,
'If You've Ever Navigated on the Erie Canal,' a song from my elementary school days. Did anyone else in other areas sing that song? Xavier??
Last spring, I spent my birthday on the towpath trail with Middle Child. We both took cameras and spent the afternoon looking for wildlife. It's not Yellowstone, but we still had a great time. Please enjoy these photos while I patiently wait for spring to arrive once more.

| A Great Blue Heron can always be found wading in the water. |
 |
| We followed these ducks, all in a row, for quite some time. |
 |
| The duck family finally decided to take a break on the rocks. |
 |
| This lady was a hoot! She had this brilliantly knitted covering for her helmet and her bike basket and was talking to anyone who came along. She was originally from Germany and was excited to tell us that this was only the second time in her life that she had spotted a hummingbird. I didn't have the heart to tell her that we see hummingbirds all summer long in our backyard. |
 |
| Turtles can usually be seen sunbathing on logs in the water. |
 |
| My favorite! A bald eagle in the nest. I had to take this picture from very far away, as you are not allowed anywhere near the nesting area. |
 |
| A view of the railroad and the infamous bridge, that some wackos attempted to blow up last year. Since I travel over the bridge frequently, that was some excitement I could do without! |
What a stunning area of the country you live in!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I do remember that song! It takes me back to my younger school days as well :)
Beautiful photos! It's so wonderful to see all that green and sunshine from last spring. Before you know it, it'll be here again. Especially enjoyed the photo of the ducks, all in a row. How cute! And the lady with the knit covered helmet sounded like such a delight!
Thanks for the tour! Really enjoyed it!

Thanks, my friend. The ducks were fun to follow! And you never know who you will meet on the towpath. Most people walking are very friendly.
DeleteLovely. We seem to have all the same birds! I love having parks available close by.
ReplyDeleteI have a State park very close, with good hiking and a nice lake for boating/kayaking. but the closest national park is about an hour away. I do go there fairly often, though. I just googled it to see where it ranks in popularity. Turns out the Smokies are the most visited park in the country.
I'm so lucky to have the natl park and a city metro park so close, plus a large neighborhood with sidewalks. No excuse not to walk! I remember reading that the Smokies was the most popular to visit. An hour isn't too bad for a visit.
DeleteThat's beautiful. I hadn't ever heard of the park, but just looked it up- you're really lucky to have that close by, and the photos are *great*, hurry up summer!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure most people haven't heard of it, plus it's a newer named park, since 2000, I think. Can't wait for summer!
DeleteYes, strange how a major park can be so popular yet so little-known. The same applies to some of the country parks and mountains in Northern Ireland. The bridge is beautiful, I'm very glad it wasn't blown up!
ReplyDeleteYes, the FBI had been following the crazies and stopped them from doing any damage.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how gorgeously green Ireland is!
Why yes, yes I have. I even once sang it whilst riding in our boat on one leg of the Erie Canal. As I recall my brother was quite embarrassed over the whole idea. My singing that is, he was cool with the canal.
ReplyDeleteWe sang that near every year as part of the yearly program in grade-school chorus.
One of these years I'm gonna do some research to find where its spurs went, reportedly at least 2 of 'em come down in our vicinity.
Cool pics, thanks.
I knew you'd have sung that song, too. I rode a canal boat once, at the very southern end of the canal. The whole lock thing was a bit tedious, at least to this little kid.
DeleteAlways a pleasure to see you here!
I love the pictures; it does look very scenic and relaxing there for some reason; such a cute lady; what a wonderful thing for her to be joyful about! I've been to Yellowstone a few times; while it is absolutely gorgeous, it can also be so very over crowded; this looks like it isn't; I like that!
ReplyDeletebetty
Yes, it wasn't crowded our day, but it can be terrible on the weekends with the narrow path and joggers and cyclists.
DeleteYellowstone is my fave national park, followed closely by Zion.
Fabulous photos and I confess I am one of the many who never heard of the place. Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the pics and now you can say you've heard of it!
DeleteLove the eagle photo ... we don't see many of those in Texas. As for spring, come visit. It's already spring here and will probably be the heat of summer within the next few weeks. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI have a cousin who lives in Houston and he's always complaining on FB about the summers. I will always take heat over cold. Always!
Deleteah, thanks for sharing such a lovely spot. i like knowing what the word means but i am super nerdy that way.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy word origins too. We have many Native American place names here. In fact all the elementary schools in my district when I was a kid had names referencing the area's first inhabitants.
DeleteI wish I could visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It sounds like a great place to visit. I liked your photos Bijoux. I listened to the Erie Canal song too. Catchy tune - Dave
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you liked the view, Dave. It was a fun song to sing when I was a youngster.
DeleteThat is such beautiful scenery. I miss mother nature, being stuck in Florida for the last two years.
ReplyDeleteAren't the Everglades pretty? I know what you mean, though. Thanks so much for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteWow! It is beautiful! Thanks for all the lovely pics. It really is nice to see grass again. I can't wait! :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to stop wearing gloves!
DeleteAww, how lovely to have such a beauty spot on your doorstep - and it's even lovelier too that you obviously don't take it for granted, but use it to the full. Looks like you and middle child spent a great time there on your birthday.
ReplyDeleteYes and I'm always happy to share my findings. Thanks for stopping by.
