After smooth sailing for eight months (December oven fail), we've hit a string of bad luck.
First, the car my son drove bit the dust a week before he left for college. It was actually very good timing, since he was done with his summer job and not taking the car to college. We debated for awhile and finally decided to replace it, since my minivan is 13 years old and could go at anytime as well. I'm driving the new car now, so go me!
Next up, the fridge! During that really weird 95 degree hot spell we had last month, the freezer (and a few days later, the fridge) in our side by side died. It took a week till I could get someone to come out and take a look at it, to which the guy told me it would cost $1000 to fix it since it was a built in. Not worth it for a 12 year old model. Decided to not get another built in when we saw the prices. Of course, that meant the electric needed to be dropped down and the water line extended. A month without a fridge was fun, but I have a small bar fridge and my daughter's old dorm fridge, so we got by. The bright side was that there was no holiday in the past month!
And are we the only family who has gone through a dozen humidifiers in 20 some years? Granted, we had many of those destroyed in all our basement floods, but still! Lost another one last month. I blame it on the fact that it runs 24/7 all summer. It's wack to live in a climate where you run a dehumidifier half the year and a humidifier the other half.
Do you think I'm done? Well, the shower head cracked and has been leaking, so got a new one of those too. At least that was cheaper than the freaking lawn mower we had to buy last weekend! Our four year old one kept sputtering. A spark plug change worked for one mow. Finally refused to even start for me a week ago. My spouse works six days a week, so even if he knew how to fix a lawn mower, there is only so much time to waste with grass growing. Sears was having an end of season sale, so we saved some money on a new one.
I'm trying to be Suzy Sunshine here. Is it working? As my husband always says, "At least they are problems you can throw money at to make them go away."

Oh you sound like me. I swear when it rains it pours! But the bright side my friend is when you hit rock bottom there is only one way to go and thats up. Start looking for the ladder because at this point it has to be somewhere!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking we are out of items that are more than 5 years old.........LOL, NOT! Hopefully that will be it for a while though!
Delete"I'm trying to be Suzy Sunshine here. Is it working? "
ReplyDeleteHA! Yes, it is because you really sounded UP and POSITIVE.
Why does it seem that when something breaks, it creates a snowball effect in which EVERYTHING seem to break at the same time? One year my DVD player, cordless phone, computer, AND digital alarm clock all broke within weeks of each other.
"I'm driving the new car now, so go me!"
KUDOS on that as well as scorning the lawn mower on sale at Sears!
Don't you love getting a new car? I've never actually purchased a NEW car because I normally buy used. But hey, the used car is NEW to me - HA!
Have FABULOSO week, my friend!
X
I was trying to not be negative, but it's hard to fight nature, Ron! I bet you had trouble finding a digital alarm clock! I couldn't find a home phone answering machine last year! We are old school!
DeleteGoodness, what a run of bad luck. Things can only get better....
ReplyDeleteWe once had a washing machine that finally packed up after 22 years when it sprung a major and unfixable leak.
And how true about problems you can throw money at.
Twenty two years is good! I actually think our first washer lasted close to that. They say most appliances have a life of 10-15 years now. I call that backwards progress.
Deleteman, i hear you. we've been having all sorts of expensive breakdowns as well. i'm holding my breath as i can see other items considering joining the mechanical mutiny.
ReplyDeleteHope it's the end of the mutiny!
DeleteWhen going through times like this, I always try to remind myself "its only money" but its hard to have that attitude when you see the money going out faster than sometimes it is coming in. So what new car do you get to drive?
ReplyDeletebetty
It's a Honda CRV so I can finally drive in the snow without as much fear.
DeleteIt does seem to come in waves like that, doesn't it? I completely sympathize and I also know your husband is absolutely right. I had a new patient yesterday that told me a horror story that left me haunted and put my own problems smack into perspective. Fixable problems are the ones to have.
ReplyDeleteSo true! Our family is fortunate that these not real problems.
DeleteIsn't it amazing how you can cruise along--and then all of a sudden it's like the world starts cracking up, literally, around you?
ReplyDeleteAmazing and annoying!
Deleteoh wow, one thing after the other breaking down. i will cry with you if you want. i hate parting with money for repairs, but it's good if one even has the money to repair it. i agree with hubby. if money can be thrown at it and it's over, throw, throw throw. haven't to throw no money is even worse and still having a problem. emergency funds are necessary, no matter how small.
ReplyDeleteThe older we get, the bigger that emergency fund needs to be.
DeleteHi Bijoux,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear of all these items breaking down. We have all been there.
I just try and muddle through and get back to normalcy. Like you guys, I think.
I am hoping that collège is going well for your children otherwise and you are all healthy.
Cheers
College is going great.....the girls have had some minor health issues that we are still trying to get to the bottom of. I may post about it one of these days. Good to see you!
DeleteThat's the problem with 'stuff'. . . it happens. . .
ReplyDeleteYup! It's nice when it spreads itself out a bit more, though.
DeleteOh man. Why does it all come at once? When it rains it pours, doesn't it? Yikes.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes. We've been through quite a bit of dehumidifiers too. They just don't make them like they used to.
I'm shocked when people tell me their dehumidifier is 12 years old! What are we doing wrong?
DeleteWe're with ya there, seems like the broken year.
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather talk about the wedding and all ..... at least that was fun
And a better way to spend money!
