Like many criminals, I did not set out to break the law today.......
Middle Child has mid-terms this week, and finished early today. It's a beautiful day; sunny and in the upper 60's. A great day for a bike ride! Let's head to the national park and ride on the towpath, I told her.
I had seen multiple facebook updates over the weekend that the national parks were being re-opened. I assumed that meant ALL the parks had re-opened. I was wrong. We arrived to find the gates to the parking lot locked. I started to do a U-turn, and noticed a pick-up truck pull up and an older man get out and go up to the gate. It looked like he might be unlocking it, so I sat there watching. Nope, he pulled out his phone and took a picture of the closed gates with the paper sign that read 'Obama Gate.' Damn! Another blogger, I guess!
You know what? We don't get too many nice fall days here, and my daughter gets even fewer free days. Sure, there are other bike paths, but none are as scenic as the national park, nor do any other trails offer the chance to see some wildlife. We were riding in that park. To hell with the government!
I parked a half a mile away and we rode our bikes over to the entrance. No chains over the bike path, so we were good to go. It was a little spooky seeing the empty parking lot and restroom area, but what a gorgeous day! It looked like we'd have the path to ourselves. Just over the bridge, I saw a cardboard sign propped up on a park sign. It read, "Storm the Gates! Save the trees!" Hmmm....well, we'd try to do our part.
I had to chuckle to myself the entire time. Middle Child is oblivious to the national news, unless we fill her in, so she didn't really understand why the gates were shut. I was just imagining my other two adult children telling me, "No! We can't do this Mom! We can't break the law!" I managed to raise a couple of Barney Fife's, let me tell you. In the back of my mind, I decided that if we were stopped by anyone (city police?), I'd just play dumb and say that the bike path wasn't blocked, so we thought it was okay. My real concern was axe murderers waiting in the woods for us delinquents. I was hoping Middle Child could peddle fast enough for us to get away!
However, we were not alone in our gate crashing. I did see a few senior citizens walking and a college student with a Kent State hoodie jogged past us. And no one told this guy, either. We were in good company!

Just consider it an act of civil disobedience...you were sticking it to the Man...you're made as hell and you're not going to take it anymore...power to the people...one of those lines.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm so glad you didn't run into any axe murderers.
Tree huggers, unite! Sometimes you've just got to rebel against the establishment.
DeleteOMG, when I first saw your post title and started to read, I thought this was going to be about you being arrested - whew!
ReplyDeleteYou know, it never dawned on me WHY some of the parks here in Philly were closed, DUH, now I remember!
This made me LAUGH...
" I managed to raise a couple of Barney Fife's, let me tell you."
HAHAHAHAHAHA! How funny because a got a vision of Barney Fife when you said that.
But I'm A LOT like you, I'm a rebel against the establishment. And anyway, like Rob shared...consider it a civil disobedience and that you were sticking to the Man. And more power to ya!
You GO, girl!
X
P.S. And faaaaaaabulous photo of the deer! I love deer!
LOL.....sorry to disappoint you, Ron! A post about my arrest would have been faaabbbuuulous!
DeleteWhen the toddlers in charge are having a hissy going on ya just gotta do whatcha gotta do.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if America banded together and didn't re-elect a single one of them, but you know that's not likely to happen.
DeleteWait. . . the government is shut down?
ReplyDeleteI hadn't noticed. . .
You're such a rebel, Beej; good thing they didn't have enough money to pay somebody to arrest you. . .
(I'd mutter something snide under my breath, like, "self-important pricks", but I know you try to maintain certain standards around here, so I won't. . .)
Over the summer, I helped a friend of mine plan her 25th wedding anniversary trip......a three week cross country trip to visit the national parks. Guess when they left?
Deletelove this - you won't let the man get you down!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot of the deer, I always feel so fortunate when I happen upon a wild one, though I've seen them all my life...in my head, an unexpected meeting with one is like finding a unicorn.
We have a family of 7 living in the woods behind our house. They actually just stand and watch us when we are outside. I'm beginning to think of them as our pets.
DeleteGreat picture of the deer! Honestly, I would have done the same thing. I'm sure you weren't the first ones either that have biked in the park since the shut down occurred.
ReplyDeletebetty
We did see others, but the traffic is definitely down. It was nice to be able to ride side by side due to no one else around.
DeleteHaha honestly good for you! The gates shouldnt be closed anyway. I dont want to go on a huge political rant here but I am glad that you were able to enjoy the parks regardless if it was breaking the law or not. Winter is coming and there is so little time left to enjoy the outdoors. So I say good for you!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shae! Today is chilly and dreary, so I'm really glad we took advantage of the nice day yesterday.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've heard, loads of people are defying the parks closures, using the parks anyway and to hell with the government and their stupid political squabbles. Good for you.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd be too much of a chicken to break in to the Grand Canyon or such place, but I totally understand the frustration.
DeleteYeah, I'm all for voting the bums out, prob is that the political machines are very effective at mind-bending people into fearing change.
ReplyDeleteVoters act like being a Rep is rocket science or something. In this day and age the most effective is the one who stops bad things from happening ...... 'cause there ain't many if any good things going
Rocket science, it isn't! There should be an ethics exam given prior to running though. Probably be too much cheating!
Delete"There should be an ethics exam given prior to running though."
DeleteAnd just who would write said test? I fear for who THEY would choose ..... ;-)
The next significant technological advance will be pants (and skirts) that spontaneously combust whenever a lie is told by the wearer. Then we can vote based on whoever tows around the smallest emergency clothing trunk. How sweet would that be?
I was told that in the Smokies, as long as you don't park in one of the major parking areas, they were not ticketing or evicting anyone.
ReplyDeleteI figured I was good because no one with authority was working.
Deletei don't understand how the parks can be closed. i mean, really. just sad. this entire world is sad. i would be too chicken to break the law cause i would get caught, arrested, shot and booked. i try to stay away from cops, don't trust them. i can't get away with nothing.
ReplyDeleteI think the world of govt is ridiculous.
DeleteMy mom has always been one to do that kind of stuff. She has trouble following rules. Especially when it comes to her wanting to take a walk or a hike. I find I may be following in her footsteps. ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you were still able to get out and enjoy the beautiful day! Besides, the government doesn't own nature!!!!
I'm normally a rule follower, but sometimes I let loose 😄
Deletei say it's a park...it's open space....you get to use it.
