My Version of Eat This, Not That

For your dining pleasure . . .

If you've never tried Faroe Island salmon, I highly recommend it.  I've never had a food that made me say, "It's like butter!"  But it truly is.

Cedar planked salmon is something I will never understand.  I've tried it twice and that was two times too many.  Why do people want their salmon to taste like the inside of granny's cedar chest?

I have a love/hate relationship with mangoes.  I think they are tasty, but they are a nuisance to peel, and if you don't eat them in that one or two day window, they are either as tasteless as a raw potato or they are stringy and mushy.  I have had much better luck with the variety pictured above: champagne mangoes.  Taste better than a regular mango and easier to handle.

A fruit I do not recommend are prickly pears.  While I love a cactus as much as the next gal, the fruit is not that impressive.  And the seeds are a hazard.  The one and only time I bought one, I shared it with Middle Child and it caused an extra trip to the orthodontist.  He said he'd have to add prickly pears to the list of forbidden foods for those with braces!

I am addicted to these.  They are Marcona almonds, the most delicious little nut in the world.  Thank you Spain, but what took you so long to share these gems with the rest of us??  You can buy them wet (olive oil) or dry (sunflower oil).  I'm not sure I will ever go back to regular almonds.  Although at $16.99/pound, it's an expensive addiction, so I have to limit myself to a few ounces a day.
I can barely look at these without dry heaving.  The dreaded Spanish peanuts.  I do not know if they actually originate in Spain, but they can have them back.  Then again, my issues may have to do with combining them with alcohol back in the '80's.

For those of you like me, who love both chocolate and red wine, DO NOT BE FOOLED!  This is possibly the most vile liquid I have ever consumed.  Stick to drinking normal red wine and having a piece of dark chocolate with it.

I'll be posting sporadically over the next few months.  The dreaded Thanksgiving family dinner is looming for me and I will need my free time to be spent in prayer for patience.  I will also be stocking up on Marcona almonds and red wine.  Ta ta for now!

  1. I had a trip to the ER over some cactus jelly, once upon a time. . .

I've seen that chocolate wine stuff; never tried it, but. . . Just because you like two foods, doesn't mean they go together. Like a peanut-butter-and-tuna sandwich. . .

    1. I think you need to do a cactus jelly post!

    2. Really, nothing more exotic than a food allergy I didn't know I had. I mean, it's not like I'm eating lots of cactus stuff up here. But when one's throat is itching, and lips swelling, and breathing is getting harder, the ER seems like the way to go. . .

    3. Does your experience negate the theory that you have to be exposed to something twice for the allergy to appear?

    4. I guess it does sorta counter-indicate it, anyway. As far as I know, that's the only time in my life I've ingested anything from a cactus. It's possible, I guess, that the cactus jelly had something in it that I had an established allergy for, but if so, I have no idea what it might have been. . .

Same here! I love eating mango's if I eat them immediately. I once tried a frozen dinner which had mango's in it ( with chicken and rice), and omg...the mango's were so MUSHY that I had to pick them out of the dinner. YUCK.

" Although at $16.99/pound, it's an expensive addiction, so I have to limit myself to a few ounces a day."

WOW...$16.99/pound?!? I adore nuts (especially cashews and macadamia's) which are also an expensive nut.

" This is possibly the most vile liquid I have ever consumed. Stick to drinking normal red wine and having a piece of dark chocolate with it."

When I first looked at that picture of the bottle, I thought it was chocolate milk! You're right, I think I'll pass on that and just stick to wine and a piece of dark chocolate.

You take care, my friend. And good luck with the Thanksgiving family dinner.

    (((((((( You )))))))

    1. Ron, if you like macadamia nuts, you would love the marcona almonds. They are softer and sweeter than a regular almond. I tried the Chocovine at a party. Nasty business! BTW, I bought some Fabulousa yesterday!! Was thinking of you all day!

  3. I love chocolate and a glass of merlot but never together for sure!! That definitely would not be on my list to try. I'm sure there are stories behind the dreaded Thanksgiving dinner so I do hope you find your patience. I guess at the end of the day, one can be grateful that they have food to provide for such a dinner and someone to share it with even if the family/friend dynamics aren't exactly what one would hope for? I do hope it is a good one though for you and yours.

  5. Wow, tham almonds is nasty expensive. Best I not try 'em, regular almonds are tough enough to moderate.

But I wanna know where the salmon recipe is, where did I miss it?? ;-)

    1. You would never eat a regular almond again. My recipe is to send my husband outside to grill the salmon.

    2. That's just not right .... didn't yore Momma teach you to share?? ;-)

That goes for the cashews as well :)

  6. Chocolate-flavoured wine sounds absolutely disgusting. How can you possibly get the full flavour of each unless you consume them separately? Whatever next? Peanut-flavoured wine? Bacon-flavoured wine?

    1. I'm fearful that the Bacon Wine is going to be next. People are obsessed with bacon over here!

  7. i have to say i like planked salmon but i agree that chocovine sounds like the the worst waste of both chocolate and wine i've every heard of.

    1. You really like that cedar flavor? It's popular, so I guess I'm the oddball.

  8. I'd eat anything on this post except the chocovino. I had the raspberry version and I thought it tasted like cough syrup. However, I had so How Now Brown Cow chocolate espresso with wine and it was actually pretty tasty.

  9. I'm CRAZY for champagne mangoes--as in, I can eat three of them in under five minutes, just standing at the sink, chowing them down.

Although I'm not familiar with your feelings about Thanksgiving, I can tell you I HATE it and would do anything to avoid it. So, um, fist bump.

  10. Wow, Bijoux, thanks for the great suggestions!

I've never heard of champagne mangoes, but now I can't wait to try them. The chocolate wine sounds plain weird so I will heed your advice and stay away.

Good luck with the upcoming holidays. And be sure to have plenty of Marcona almonds and red wine!

    1. They are great mangoes. I wish I could tell you their season, but my grocer just carries them sporadically, with no rhyme or reason. I'm stocking up on the red wine!

  11. So I have a funny story about one of the foods you mention on here...mangos. So back in my younger years (lol) I was engaged to a Mexican and mangos were an every day fruit for them. Well for me they were a totally foreign substance. He brought me one with a bowl and a knife. And what did I do? Bite right into it skin and all. Didnt live that one down for a long time...the more you know!

Choco Wine looks interesting...dissapointed to hear its not tasty...is it bad that I still wanna try it?

    1. LOL....that mango skin is not tasty! It's funny how popular they are now, but I think the first time I tried one was only about 10 yrs ago. Drink the Chocovine at your own risk!

  12. Oh damn. Someone gave a bottle of that chocolate wine and now I am scared to open it. Or regift it.
