Long Gone AND Forgotten

Have you ever found something in your residence, left behind by former occupants?  At our previous home, we never found anything inside the house.  Only a few Matchbox cars, forgotten out in the woods, by boys who were now probably 40 years old.  That was all.

However, we've found an interesting variety of things in this house. The previous owners had professional movers/packers do their work for them, and I must say, I don't think they got what they paid for.  I found new bottles of hand lotion in corners of bathroom cabinets, unopened packages of candles and chocolate chips in far reaches of kitchen cupboards, and a wooden plaque still hanging in the laundry room, above the doorway.  Nothing the owners probably wanted, but still, it seemed like a piss poor packing job!  I'm confident we didn't leave anything behind at our old house. I double checked every cabinet numerous times before we turned over the keys.

Here are some of the more unusual finds in this house over the past year:

Being the nosy person that I am, you know I just had to insert this into my computer to check for porn! Ha! Nothing too exciting; just some Easter baskets and pictures at the beach of kids I didn't recognize.

Isn't this a pretty little fan?  It reminds me of one I had as a child.

This was a rather shocking find when we remodeled the kitchen.  Someone received a birthday gift that they didn't want! It was shoved into a crevice in the built-in desk.  Personally, I would have burned the damned thing!

Wishing all of you a new year of wiped slates, new beginnings, good health, and forgotten bad memories.  Happy 2014!

  2. We've inherited several cans of dried-out paint. . .

And, uh, remind me to keep close track of my memory cards when I'm around you. . . ;)

    1. We were happy with the leftover paint. These people were nutty with the paraphernalia on the walls. I think my husband patched about 100 nail holes!

And if you're going to just leave a memory card sitting around . . .

Bwhahahhahahaha! HILARIOUS! And I would have done the same thing! I was hoping you were going to tell us that you found pictures of a crime scene or something dramatic like that!

And that voodoo doll???? OMG...I would have burned it too! And it looks brand new, like no one ever even used it.

You've found much more exciting things than I ever did, moving into a new place. Like Mark, all I've ever found were dust bunnies!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, my friend! Looking forward to blogging with you in 2014!

    Cheers and X

    1. I knew you'd get a kick out of this stuff, Ron! The voodoo doll is handmade and was probably a gag gift. It's funny that it was just shoved into a drawer. We know by the name on it that it was the original owner's and not the previous occupants of this house, so it could have been in the back of that drawer for 20 years.

  4. Interesting they had professional movers and still left things behind. I'm thinking they told the movers not to move these particular things because when you tell the movers "everything goes", they take that seriously and everything goes. I once left a stuffed toy out on the counter that I didn't want them to pack but I said "pack up the kitchen" and sure enough the toy got packed up.

One rental house we lived in had a list of what you had to do on leaving to get your deposit back. Clean the baseboards, walls, windows, etc. They said the house had to be completely empty; no hangers hanging in the closet, etc. They wanted it completely empty for their next tenant.

Most of the houses we've lived in have been completely empty when we moved into them except, of course, the house we are living in now when it was completely full of hubby's parents things when we moved in. That is something I wish would have been long gone and forgotten, but almost 3 years later I'm still dealing with it.

May 2014 be a great one for you and yours!

    1. The stuff left behind were in far reaches of cabinets, so it was clearly just a poor job done by the 'professional' movers. It's hard to find good help these days!

The owners left us an apology note that the house was such a mess, but the movers had packed all their cleaning supplies. I didn't care, as I'd have cleaned everything again anyway.

  5. What a bizarre old-age doll! Who on earth needs something to tell them how old and decrepit they're getting? As you say, best burnt and got rid of.

I've never found anything very interesting in new homes. Mostly garages full of old paint and tiles and rubbish. We've been left some beautiful curtains in some cases, though.

    1. Is that doll awful? A mean gag gift, for sure!

It's common practice here to leave all window treatments, and usually, the appliances. I think it's different in Europe? I've seen on a TV shows where the kitchens are empty of any appliances, which must make moving even more difficult.

    2. By window treatments you mean curtains, blinds etc? Yes, in the UK they're usually left behind. Likewise appliances. But it's all negotiable so in some cases people take curtains, fridges etc with them.

  6. Nice. My first apartment had nudies of a previous resident couple in a stack on the closet shelf.

This house has led to many finds, mostly mundane, but we have found a few things. Old newspapers in the walls, old money deposit bags (minus the money), a WWII era bayonet, but nothing really truly interesting. In our case the prior owners were lazy dead-beats who only took what they wanted and left the rest for us to throw away.

    1. A bayonet is interesting; not sure what I'd do with it, though. Trash or treasure, right?

    2. hey, if I hadn't painted it to use as a Sunday School prop it'd go for about $45 on ebay .... :-)

  7. My goodness, you're right about those "professional" packers! What a crappy job. But it's fascinating to find the pieces of other people's lives. It makes you wonder what they're like and why they had this stuff.

Excellent thought about clean slates and new beginnings--Happy New Year!

That is a varied collection! Though the doll have me the creeps. That is really an odd gift to give.

  9. Ha! That doll is weird. I heard you should never burn a voodoo doll because it brings very bad things. Or something. I don't know.
When we moved into this house we found a safe, a very old brief case, and a rubix cube. I'm sure there were other things but I've forgotten now.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful 2014!

  10. That little voodoo ailment doll is a horrible idea for a gift. Jeez.

This house was packed with things the owners left behind - some cool small antique items, a gorgeous glass-fronted barrister's bookcase, old tools, porch furniture, ladders, and so on. A lot of junk, too, but a lot of stuff I was happy to inherit!

    1. The previous owners here were moving overseas, so they did ask if we wanted them to leave some big items that they didn't want to ship (ceramic outdoor pots, long card tables) or just pitch them. We said leave it and were glad they did, too.

  11. i'm like you and positive nothing that i don't know of was left. i did leave a bag in the attic (on purpose) and said i would get it later. i know where it is and guess i don't need it. that doll scares the poo out of me.

  13. that IS a weird set of finds, the doll especially! at this house we found some horrendously rotten lunchmeat in the fridge. it needed to be thoroughly cleaned. we also found a pair of underwear beneath the washer when we moved it.

at our last house we found several dishes, glasses, and a serving platter, which we actually use. hahahah.
