First, it was the revelation that Mike Brady wasn't enjoying his time in bed with Carol. And that Marcia and Greg and Greg and Mrs. Brady were an item. . . ewwwww!

But did they have to ruin Sea World for me, too? For those who missed it, #Blackfish was blowing up social media right before the holidays. From the CNN website about the film:
Blackfish traces a 39-year history of killer whales in captivity leading up to the 2010 killing of Sea World trainer Dawn Brancheau by the 12,000-pound orca, Tilikum, a whale previously associated with the death of two other people. Blackfish chillingly shows that this incident of violence is hardly an isolated one, along the way exploring the extraordinary nature of orcas, thought to be one of the most intelligent species in the animal kingdom.
It was a hard film to watch, and it took me several evenings of going back to it, till I caught the whole thing. The film blames Sea World, and other marine parks around the globe, for not protecting its trainers as well as for the injustice of keeping whales in captivity.
Going to Sea World was an annual event every summer for my family. For a kid stuck in the Midwest (and never even seeing an ocean till I was 17), it was a huge thrill. I can still remember walking through the entrance for the first time the year it opened (1970), even though I was only seven years old. (**None of these pictures are mine**)
Sea World was a little bit of magic. There was the star, Shamu (and later, Namu), the killer whale. You were warned when you entered the outdoor theatre that if you sat in the first six rows, you'd be getting wet. Shamu would swim around the pool with his trainer doing various stunts and at the end of each show, an audience member would be chosen to come up to the pool and get a kiss from Shamu. Another popular show featured dolphins/porpoises who would jump in the air through hula hoops and whatnot. This was in the day when kids could be captivated by low tech entertainment, sitting on an aluminum bench in the hot sun.
There was also a waterski show on the lake with some corny theme every year, such as the Hatfield & McCoy's. I didn't ever enjoy it, but my parents were impressed by the waterskiing acrobatics. Another weird part of the park was a Japanese garden/pagoda area, where you could pay to watch a female diver retrieve an oyster with a pearl (?) in it from the bottom of a pool. As a kid, I had zero interest in any of that.
No, what I loved was the Clyde & Seymour sea lion and otter show. Those sea lions and otters were just full of hijinx! You could always count on one of them to push a trainer into the pool or to blow a clown's horn, conveniently located within their reach.
My other favorite was the penguin encounter. You rode a people mover (like in an airport) through a sub-zero (that's how it felt) building, while passing every variety of penguin standing around on blocks of ice. The only natural part of the whole thing was probably the smell!
In today's world, Sea World doesn't seem like such a good idea. But I still have fond memories of a time when I could sit next to my brother and actually enjoy his company while watching a sea lion, dressed as a waiter, deliver a breakfast tray to two otters on their honeymoon. Good old fashioned family fun.

Wow...I had not heard about this in Sea World?! Like you, I have such fond memories of visiting the Sea World in Orlando, Florida. The penguin encounter was my favorite because I LOVE penguins! And you're so right about the smell.
ReplyDelete"it was the revelation that Mike Brady wasn't enjoying his time in bed with Carol. And that Marcia and Greg and Greg and Mrs. Brady were an item. . . ewwwww!'
HA! I know, I thought the same thing after watching a documentary on The Brady Bunch, which revealed all of that. The actress who played Jan, said that although she enjoyed the whole experience of being on that show, also said that she did not want to be forever associated with being JAN on The Brady Bunch, so she never did the reunion show or any specials after the show was over.
I knew you would have been a Sea World fan too, living in Florida. We were lucky to have one so close to us for about 30 years. And yes, that Eve Plumb thought she was too good for the rest of them after the show was over! Hahaha! I think she was just jealous of Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!
DeleteGrowing up we watched news, football, All in the Family, MASH, and not much else. Sounds like I didn't miss much!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have Sea World but we did have what was considered a great zoo, if you can call concrete enclosures and chain link fences for critters 'great'. Hey, at least we have some great carousels around here.
Sounds like you had the same three channels that we did. My parents never took us to the zoo. The only time I ever went was on a kindergarten field trip and the next time was with a boyfriend in college. My parents probably would have taken us to the zoo, had there been shows.
DeleteI remember when I heard the news about Mike Brady it was shocking, now it would not be so shocking, almost like loss of innocence back then compared to being "jaded" by so many other things. You would think David Cassidy learned his lesson, but apparently he didn't and this one is going to cost him some jail time I do believe.
ReplyDeleteWhile we've obviously gone to Sea World a few times over the years, it was a nice place to visit, funny I remember that the biggest thing when we were younger was we had to get a pearl, LOL, but as I grew older I always thought it was possible for a "wild" animal to cause harm/injury, like I'm of a philosphy every dog will bite so when someone says "my dog is friendly" or he "won't bite" I'm thinking "you really don't know that." I guess I'm surprised there's not more injuries that happen at places like Sea World. I know PETA is real involved fighting for animal rights here at the San Diego Sea World.
betty
It's sad what has happened to so many child stars. I'm with you about wild animals, even dogs. My brother and BFF were bit by dogs in front of me, so I'm very cautious. I had zero interest in being kissed by Shamu!
DeleteIt would really be shocking if Greg, Marcia, and Mrs. Brady were all three an item together.
ReplyDeleteI was fortunate enough to be about a two-hour drive when Keiko the killer whale (the real-life Free Willy star) was the star attraction of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. They built a special pool just for him, and he never had to perform for the entertainment of others again. It was great just seeing him swimming around happily and carefree. And then, best of all, they gave up their revenue source in order to do the right thing and set him free, for real.
That's how it should be, in my opinion.
Mrs. Brady was such a cougar! I'm sure she could have taught Marcia a thing or two.
DeleteI hope Keiko is roaming the Pacific, happy and free at last!
The Emperor Penguins at Sea World are so large, it's freaky! We've gone twice with our kids, and you're right about some of this stuff being so boring (waterskiing show). Never saw the pearl retrieval show ::: snooze :::. I have an elephant on a yellow water ski that I must have bought as a souvenir from Sea World San Diego as a child. Do you recall a waterskiing elephant?
ReplyDeleteEmperor penguins are amazing! I could just watch all of them for hours. I do not remember a waterskiing elephant, but it sounds kitschy enough for Sea World!
Deleteour family used to do the annual sea world thing as well - on the gold coast in queensland - it always was a special time for me and my sisters.
ReplyDeletei 've taken my kids there a couple of times and and they love it (so do i still)
My kids were young when ours closed, so I don't think they will remember us going.
DeleteThat second photo for David Cassidy just hurts me.
ReplyDeleteI think anytime you turn wild animals into entertainers rather than letting them live in at least something like their natural habitats, you're going to have trouble.
David was my first celebrity crush :*
Delete#Blackfish was well done and proved your point.
Well, all that goes straight over my head, except that I remember the young and widely-adored David Cassidy. It's sad when some childhood hero or heroine goes off the rails or somehow ruins their life. There's something about the pressure of being a celebrity that just sends some people over the edge.
ReplyDeleteEurope doesn't have the equivalent of Sea World?? Haha, well my friend, you have missed out. And it does seem as though childhood stars are more likely to turn out worse than your average Joe.
DeleteThere's no Sea World in the UK as far as I can discover. It sounds a lot more interesting and entertaining than your run-of-the-mill aquarium.
DeleteI've heard BLACKFISH is very good, but I just can't. It's such a muddled controversy--I mean, I get the point of view of protecting the animals...but those trainers really love those animals, too.
ReplyDeleteSo let's just focus on the problem that is David Cassidy and booze.
He did one too many shows in Vegas and it sent him over the edge!
DeleteDavid, not the whale......bahahaha
DeleteFor exactly the reason you are describing I have not yet watched BlackFish but I think I might have to after seeing all the hype. Sea World is such an amazing place I hate to think of the dark underbelly of it. Really makes me sad to see childhood memories ruined by reality.
ReplyDeleteWe are in agreement!
DeleteYou know what they say about the family that plays together. . .
ReplyDeleteAnd you know that's the only reason they let Mike and Carol have a double bed on TV. . .
It's funny, looking back at what my parents chose to take us to . . . Caves, factory tours, and Sea World!
DeleteI was referring to the Bradys. . .
Delete;)
Idols from your childhood probably are bound to fail you as an adult. You are innocent and idealistic. Media feeds you the story they want you to believe.
ReplyDeleteI had not heard of Blackfish, but knew as an adult that killer whales got their name from their traits. thanks for the informative post.
Bill, are you being sarcastic when you call this informative?
DeleteChildhood is a time of innocence, so we have no way of knowing what goes on at circuses or zoos or water parks.
ReplyDeleteIn New York there's a strong move to ban the horse drawn carriages in Central Park. Growing up you think how romantic these carriages are, but you don't give much thought to the horse.
I had no idea that sort of ban is under consideration! Is it cruel to make a horse pull a carriage? A stagecoach must have really been torture! A positive will be cleaner streets.
DeleteRead your comment on Ron's blog and popped over to look at your blog. It's a very entertaining read! And educational for me since I've never been to Sea World.
ReplyDeleteDavid Cassidy? Oh jeez! I looked at the second picture and...NO, can't be. Well maybe.
I laughed when I read the part about the pearl. At first I thought that should be pretty interesting but on second thought I decided it would be a lot like watching somebody pick the goody out a nut.
The sea lions and otters would be my favorite too! I used to like penguins a lot but Danny DeVito ruined that.
Glad you enjoyed the post and thanks for stopping by! I can see how DeVito could ruin something for a person.
Deletewait, i'm still stuck on this: And that Marcia and Greg and Greg and Mrs. Brady were an item. for real?
ReplyDeletedavid cassidy (2nd photo) looks a mess!
i love animals, but hate to see them in captive, but i probably wouldn't be able to see them any other way. didn't hear about the whale though.
we have a zoo here not far from home and the animals are so depressed i refuse to go back. how do i know they are depressed. one of the animals was reading a self-help book. not really, but almost.
I always think the gorillas look depressed at the zoo, but they have expressive faces compared to other animals. You are right that unless you go on a safari, probably never going to see these animals outside of a zoo.
