My birthday and Mother's Day usually fall on the same week. I do not mind that we just combine the two together into one day with our kids and then, my husband and I will celebrate my birthday alone, going to a nice restaurant or on an outing. This year we are traveling to a winery on my birthday.
Sunday morning, before the kids were up, we took a six mile hike in our nearby national park. Such a gorgeous day, and the perfect temperature for hiking (upper 60's by late morning).
A nice variety of cards......handmade, computer-generated, and of course, everyone knows I love weiner dogs!
I am always delighted when I feel as though the gift giver has really put some thought into the gift . "It's the thought that counts" has more meaning to me than the monetary definition most people use it for. My son gave me the puzzle, because even though he despises puzzles, I love them, and he knows how much I love the geology of Utah and Arizona. Middle Child gave me the blackberry vanilla body cream because she knows how much I love those scents. My oldest daughter gave me those two 'Napa Valley' collection candles because she knows how much I enjoy burning scented candles all year long. Plus, I do like wine country.
Here is the birthstone necklace that they gave me for Mother's Day. I liked it that the stones were arranged in the proper birth order, because they can't be changed and I'm weird that way.
When oldest entered the store to buy the candles, she was given this 8X10 promotion, along with a Sharpie. She said she felt pressured to hurry up and write something, so this is what she came up with. Unfortunately, this did not satisfy the sales associates, who kept insisting that she take a 'selfie' with the sign and post it to twitter with the #welovemom hashtag. She was a bit unnerved that they kept following her around the store asking her to do that, even though she told them she didn't want to. Then, they began bugging her fiancé to take the picture for her. I told her maybe they should play that song 'Let Me Take A Selfie' on loop in the store! Weird.
The way they talk is totally '80's Valley Girl. Everything old is new again!
OMG, I love that your birthday is within the same week as Mother's Day...that's AWESOME!
So Happy Mother's Day AND Happy Birthday to you!
"everyone knows I love weiner dogs!"
Hey, I had no idea about that, but it's funny you mentioned it because one of my friends from Florida loves wiener dogs as well. In fact, she had one for many, many years and his name was S.O.S. He was adorable!!!
Love the birthstone necklace they gave you. It's beautiful! Also, I love silver over gold jewelry.
Enjoyed the video. And you're right...so 80's Valley Girl talk!!!!
I'm amazed with a 6 mile hike! Lots of goodies you go there. Happy birthday when it happens! That was weird at the store, that would make me uncomfortable too. That was a nice necklace, I remember doing the same for a ring for my mom. I downplay a lot of special days for me, my birthday is so close to Christmas and I think I adopted my mom's philosophy of Mother's Day that mothers should be treated kindly and respectfully every day, not just on Mother's Day, so I really don't expect much and we don't do much for them, dinner out, that sort of thing. But I was pleasantly surprised when son actually remembered it was Mother's Day a few days before it and arranged to have lunch here when we got home from church (sandwiches) and bought me a flowered plant (which I hope I don't kill, I'm terrible with plants).
Have fun at the winery! Should be a great experience!
I saw that Yankee Candle was doing that promotion but they shouldn't be so aggressive about it. No means no! If someone feels like they're being hassled, they'll likely leave without buying something...which will cost them more money than the one customer they'd possibly bring in by someone posting a picture to Twitter.
I gotta start by saying that Selfie song is beyond obnoxious. Have you heard the male parody? "Let me take a d*ck* pic? Its a little profane but definitely funny and worth a watch. Looks like you got some awesome gifts and had a fun time this year. Cant wait to hear about your trip to the winery!
I laughed out loud! How old is your friend? Oh, never mind, I know someone who is 51 and does that for compliments, I'm sure! And she gets them, but not from me either! Gah!
Mid-forties. Too old to be engaging in that sort of thing! An older friend from my school posted on FB today, "I am so un/tech-savvy. When I first heard the word 'selfie', I thought it was slang for masturbation. Was surprised when it was announced as word of the year on television." Someone else immediately commented, "It IS masturbation." It kinda is.
Ok, at first, I didn't know this was you...........and I wasn't sure I wanted to respond to a stranger about masturbation......hahaha. But I can see what you mean, as selfies are all about self love!
It's funny: my teenaged daughter is trying to bring "Valley Girl" talk back. She's starting with "gag me with a spoon" and hoping that'll catch on. I say, some things are better left buried in the past.
Happy Birthday! Happy Mother's Day! I want to hear more about the winery. That was creepy that your daughter was harassed like that. Love the Selfie video! Hubby just showed me that yesterday. I'm a lil' slow to catch on to new things.
I love the Tittle .. I have happy weekend... :)

Jimmy and I had the weiner dog thing in common. I thought you might get a kick out of that song.

betty
I'm glad your son spent Mothers Day with you. Thanks for the kind wishes.
DeleteHey, glad you had a great time. Happy happy!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Happy.
DeleteYou're welcome, and many happy returns (whatever that means).
DeleteI love the intellectual dog with the very serious-looking glasses! Happy Birthday and Mother's Day to you.
ReplyDeleteA six-mile hike before the kids were up? That's very impressive.
I don't often encounter sales assistants as blatantly pushy as that. I would have given them some pretty ripe language myself.
For me, I hate it that everyone assumes everyone has a smartphone. I don't, so it would have been super annoying to be harassed like that.

ReplyDeleteI agree, and have left stores before when the sales associates made me feel uncomfortable.
DeleteOh how nice! Very thoughtful gifts. I love that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Birthday!!!
Very strange about the sales associate. What the heck? Bug off lady!
Not belated yet! Maybe the sales staff got a bonus for number of tweets?
DeleteWell, happy days to you!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I look at that jigsaw puzzle and shudder. So much brown. That's going to be a toughie!!
Thanks so much! My last puzzle was a 2000 piece one of Times Square on NY Eve. Gives me something to do in the winter.

ReplyDeleteI have not heard the parody. . . And I'm a little afraid to google it! Ha!
Deleteokay i hate that song selfie too. can't stand it. however i am glad you enjoy both days.
ReplyDeleteIt's repetitive and annoying, for sure!
DeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThe whole selfie thing has gotten crazy. I have a friend who posts selfies incessantly on FB. At least one a day. I just ignore them.
I laughed out loud! How old is your friend? Oh, never mind, I know someone who is 51 and does that for compliments, I'm sure! And she gets them, but not from me either! Gah!

DeleteHappy belated birthday and Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of Daschunds that live in our neighborhood. The kids will always want to stop and pet them--great dogs.
My grandma had one and it will always be my favorite dog, though I've never had a pet.
Deletelooks like you got some great pressies - enjoy your day at the winery.
ReplyDeleteWeather looks like it will be crap, but we will have a good time nonetheless.
DeleteIt's funny: my teenaged daughter is trying to bring "Valley Girl" talk back. She's starting with "gag me with a spoon" and hoping that'll catch on. I say, some things are better left buried in the past.
ReplyDeleteHahaha....I've always been fascinated about the origins of new phrases, but never thought about bringing back old ones.
