Over the weekend, we visited a 55 acre winery in our state that has only been in operation for about five years. I have been wanting to try it for a while, especially since I had originally told my daughter and her boyfriend about it, and they managed to get themselves engaged there. Despite our visit being the conclusion of (what felt like) 40 days and 40 nights of rain, we still had a fantastic time and I was able to get a few shots in the 30 dry minutes we had that day.
We entered the property and were surprised by the California-style entry with the vineyard sign overheard. We drove past some vineyards and buildings that housed a marketplace, bistro, and villas where you can stay overnight in luxury suites.
Our destination was the wine tasting bar and restaurant. We entered a two-story building, had a seat at the bar, and looked over the tasting menu. We decided on their 'tour' of six whites and reds. Our bartender/wine server was drop-dead gorgeous. Think a very refined and polished Adam Levine as a Calvin Klein model. When the guy turned his back to us to get our wineglasses, I just looked at my husband and he laughed and said, "Happy Birthday to YOU!" No doubt!
Well, let it be said by me, once again, that you can't make a good red this side of the Mississippi. No body whatsoever. But the whites were good, and I actually liked one of them a lot. They also sell some select wines from Italy made exclusively for the vineyard, where the winemaker immigrated from. I will say that they gave substantial pours for a tasting. Thank you!
Next, we were off for the 45 minute tour with about ten others. The guide was a former teacher and she made the tour both interesting and informative. My favorite part of a winery tour is always the barrel room, so this tour did not disappoint.
By this time, we were hungry, so we headed upstairs to the more informal restaurant on the grounds. We started out with their formmagio and crostini plate and then ordered a few pastina (orzo) bowls. I had the summer garden vegetable and my husband had the spicy beef short rib one. Everything was delicious. Plus, we tried some wines off of the tasting menu.
It was time to walk off the food and wine, and we were fortunate to have a short break in the rain.

Last December, this area was decorated with Christmas trees and was all lit up at night. My future son-in-law proposed here (as told to me by my daughter)
After some shopping in the Marketplace, we headed home. A very enjoyable day!

OMG (being a wine-lover like you) I would have SO enjoyed this! And what a beautiful winery! It's picture perfect. And I am drooling over that wine bottle chandelier. How cool is that!

HA! That is too funny!
And it's ironic you posted about wine today because last Friday night I went to a dinner party at someone's home and her husband makes his own wine. And can I just tell ya, it was FABULOUS. It was a red Chianti. So smooth and flavorful. And boy...did I ever get a BUZZ!
Loved that last photo of you!
And HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, my friend!

I don't think I've ever had homemade wine. Last summer, I tried someone's homemade limoncello and it was god awful stuff, but I don't like strong alcohol like that. Isn't that chandelier beautiful? They use red wine bottles for some of their wines, which was new to me.
DeleteThanks for your kind wishes and have a fab week.
What a perfect place to propose--especially at Christmastime. Are they planning to get married there, too?
ReplyDeleteNo, but they chose a beautiful indoor/outdoor location on a lake for the reception that is closer to home.
DeleteThis place looks fabulous! I love winery tours, though probably has a lot to do with all the wine. Glad you had such a good time! You look great in that photo, btw...
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of barrel rooms. And they all smell a little different! Thanks for the compliment, Rob.
DeleteWow, some very cool sightlines there. I never thought about the red-wine-east-of-the-Mississippi thing before; I guess the best Michigan wines are pretty much all whites (and maybe a few blushes), tho, come to think of it. . .
ReplyDeleteGlad yer birthday was a good one. Many happy returns!
Thanks, Craig! I bet Michigan makes great ice wines!
DeleteLoved the picture of you, as well as all the other pictures! I was impressed with how green everything was, but after all that rain, I'm sure there is nothing but green growing there! Sounded like a wonderful place to celebrate your birthday, can't go wrong at a winery! And a delightful place to get engaged!
ReplyDeleteI do wonder, did the weather hold for the wedding that was being set up?
betty
It is completely green here. My son's BFF in college is from Texas and she can't get over the green. It has always been a shock for me to return home from trips out west and see the green. I guess it's our reward for cruel weather!
DeleteIt poured after we left the winery. I'd never take a chance on an outdoor wedding here.
Hey youngster, now I have to redo you in my head to a brunette!
ReplyDeleteNice digs.
Thank you for the 'youngster'!
Deletethat place looks like a great place to visit....personally, I always take lots of photo's when I visit wineries because the next day I usually can't remember much about them!
ReplyDeleteHaha.....true! Though I get more tired from it than anything.
DeleteVery picturesque place. The green is something that grabs my attention as well. I guess all that rain paid dividends.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday as well.
Thanks, Slamdunk!
DeleteWhat a beautiful place. I love touring wineries. I just learned of one here in my county that I want to go see.
ReplyDeleteAlways enjoy one of your traveling posts!
DeleteThat place is absolutely gorgeous! Might need to get on my bucket list. I love the picture of the wine bottle chandelier! Absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou should try the Finger Lakes........not that far from you!
DeleteI'll second that, we've got a bunch of good 'uns right amongst the lakes and the drive is dandy too.
DeleteBeautiful winery! How far east of the Mississippi are you, just out of curiosity? Also, it's a great site for a wedding. We were supposed to go wine tasting last weekend but had to cancel. We're hoping to hit some of the many wineries in northwestern Oregon this summer.
ReplyDeleteI would love to go to some Oregon wineries. One of my HS friends lived in Portland for five years and really enjoyed the wineries. (Email me your email address, if you get the chance)
DeleteHmmm, guess I need to work some on my Wineyness, didn't realize our reds were sub-standard. maybe some research is in order ...
ReplyDeleteWhoa, nice pic. Believe it or not, you look like you could be sister to Queenie's favorite cousin ... the one who I've always thought you had other similarities to as well.
I'm everyone's favorite cousin!
DeleteWow! What a beautiful place! A wedding would be gorgeous there. Yowsa! And a proposal too. How lucky! What a great spot!
ReplyDeleteGlad you and the hubby had such a lovely time together! (and his comment made me chuckle. awesome. :) )
Super good time, for sure!
DeleteYoungster indeed. My mental image of you was completely different to the reality. Influenced by the snarling face at the top, no doubt!
ReplyDeleteA while ago I did a wine-tasting at a winery outside Melbourne. They also gave us very generous samples, and not having much of a head for alcohol, I staggered back to the car in a somewhat befuddled condition (but don't worry, I wasn't driving)
I haven't posted a photo in ages.......guess it was time! Yes, sometimes the tastings are much too much. When we are traveling to multiple wineries in one day, we always share the tastings.
Deleteoh my word. it looks beautiful there. i'm not a big fan of wine, but i would definitely go there and maybe even taste a little of the grapes.
ReplyDeleteThe food was really good! I saw a few kids there enjoying pop!
