Throwing It Way Back

Someone made my day when they posted this never before seen (by me) photo:

Last Day of 8th Grade - I am on the far right

What I love about this picture:

1. I have specific fond memories of all of these junior high friends - sled riding, boys we liked, trips to camp, New Year's Eve parties, slumber parties, Halloween parties, Washington D.C. trip, French class and the dumb language lab.

2. My earth shoes! I loved those things!

What I don't love about this picture:

1. The fact that I look high? Seriously, what am I doing?

My kids got a kick out of this picture, probably because I have no photos of myself at this age. My oldest said, "OMG, Mom! That looks JUST like you!"  Well, yeah, because it is me. And I've come full circle on the hair.

Me today, with another childhood friend

  1. I love throwback pictures. So fun. They bring back so many good memories, don't they? I love the shirt you are wearing in the pic.
I love how surprised your kids are that it looks like you. HA! Funny. "Mom! You were a kid once!" It is hard to see our parents as anything other than our parents when we are kids, isn't it?
I love that you posted a current pic of you. You look fantastic!

    1. Thanks, Kat. My oldest is at the age where she's realizing how fast life moves, and she now appreciates my nostalgic stories. My other two still think I'm wack though.

  2. I'm sure lots of wonderful memories flooded back when you saw that picture :) You looked great now and then!

    1. Thanks, Betty. I have no memory of that day and was so surprised to see the photo. We never went outdoors in junior high, so I'm guessing they made an exception for the last day during lunch period. They were great friends.

  3. Heh. You don't look high; just a junior-high girl tryin' to look badass. . .

My oldest daughter, when she was about 5, somehow came across my college-freshman ID, in which my hair was thick & curly & almost shoulder-length. She could see that it was me, but she couldn't stop laughing. "You look like a mommy!" Yeah, that's what my dad said, too. . .

    1. My kids were also shocked by my college ID....not the hair, but the fact that I was so tan, I look like I'm a different race.

  4. Oh, I love these photos, Bijoux! You looked great then and you look fabulous now!

My niece is harassing me for my old yearbook photo, but I have assured her that Hell will freeze over before she ever lays eyes on that atrocity!

    1. Thanks, Rob. And now I think I will start harassing you about posting your own throwback!

  5. You haven't changed much. I had earth shoes too!

  6. "The fact that I look high? Seriously, what am I doing? "

Bwhahahahhaha! OMG...I loved that! And I also loved your earth shoes because I totally forgot about those!

GREAT photograph! I adore seeing old photos of people who I blog with because it gives me a peek into their past.

Love the photograph of you now too! You look faaaaaaabulous!

    Thanks for sharing, my friend!

    1. I've been trying to figure out my expression....I think I was getting bored of picture taking? I just look weird!

I always enjoy your photos from the 70's too.....we were both faaaaaabulous (and still are!)

      No self esteem issues here!

  7. Whoa - have you ever posted a photo of yourself before? You look great and it is so, so interesting to get to see what you actually look like (versus your avatar).

In the throw-back photo, you look less high to me than bored. Except that kid of teenaged affected bored, you know?

And I loved my earth shoes, too!

    1. Well, thanks, Agent! (I've posted photos very infrequently of myself, but I was in a few of the photos I emailed of the wedding).

I do remember being bored a LOT as a kid. My oldest is the same way, and it's been a little embarrassing to watch.

  8. Wow, you don't look a day older than in the first pic. How is that possible?

Earth shoes? That's a new one on me. Says Wikipedia "Unlike most other shoes, the soles were thick and the heels were thin, so wearing them one walked heel-downward." Eh?

    1. I have really good genes!

I think earth shoes were marketed to be good for spine alignment or some other nonsense that I'm sure my mom believed and was the reason she bought them for me.

    2. I remember the marketing at the time said that it was like walking on a sandy beach, since your heel was below your toes. . .

    3. I can only dream of sandy beaches......

    1. Good question! No, I'm the only junior girl in the picture. Different set of friends!

  10. You still look very young! There are pictures of me in the "big hair" days that are quite embarrassing! You don't look high--you look like someone snapped the picture before you were in your pose!

    1. I've probably had 20 different hairstyles in between those two photos, and most involved big hair!

    1. My mom only took pictures at birthdays. And they are probably covered in mildew in a box in her basement.

  14. I love seeing these--for some reason, I've never had an image of you in my mind (maybe you don't post many photos, eh?), and it's really fun to SEE you, even when you were young and looking high. :)

  15. Somewhere, a picture of me wearing moon boots exists. That's a very frightening concept. But at least I never permed my hair like my brother. 30 years later and he still hasn't lived that one down!

    1. I never knew a guy that permed his hair.......but a lot of guys I knew did have 'fro's back then!
