And There Was Much Rejoicing

If you ever want to see a group of people jumping for joy, take a non-stop flight where the difference in temperatures is an increase of 85 degrees . . . after a long, brutal winter. When we landed in Miami last week, I was beyond excited. My husband and I immediately began disrobing on the tarmac (well, at least the outer layers). I swear that I had not actually seen the sun since early December.

From there, we took a one hour bus ride to Palm Beach. We stayed at a historic resort right on the water, and fortunately for us, our room was ready when we checked in at 11:30 a.m. After a lunch outdoors of fish tacos and crab cakes, we headed to the beach.

That first view

Walking on the beach and looking south
Dozens of these Portuguese Man-of-Wars were washed up on the beach
(Don't they look fake?)
One of the many shacks along Palm Beach

Solitary shorebird looking for his lunch

Shell hunting never gets old for me, especially when you find these sorts of gems

A VERY happy Bijoux

One of the best parts of the trip was being unplugged for the week. No internet, no phone calls, no TV. (Though I did text my kids a few times, just to let them know we were enjoying ourselves.....ha!)

I'm leaving in a few hours to pick up my son for his spring break. I haven't seen him since early January, so I probably won't be posting again for another week or so. I'll return with photos of other vacation activities. Cheers!

  1. When I lived in Hawaii, Portugese man-of-war were a constant threat. It's a wonder I never got stung with all the boogie-boarding I did back then. Looks like a great trip - glad you got to defrost for a while!

    1. We steered clear of them! First time we've ever seen them. It was one of my best trips ever.

  2. Good to see you back from yer vaykay! A week in Florida w/ no kids - what a concept! ;)

We did a couple of spring breaks in FL, back in the day (a couple hours up the coast from where you were - closer to the Space Center); we didn't fly, but I remember feeling like we were really getting away with something to be in 85F on the beach in mid-March.

The PMOW reminds me of the first time we went - we were walking on the beach (which I thought looked remarkably similar to Lake Michigan in August), and Jen spotted one. She tsked loudly, in disgust that some moron had just dropped an empty baggie on the beach, after he finished his sandwich, which had obviously included grape jelly. Just before she bent down to pick it up for deposit in a trash bin, I realized what it was and yelled at her to leave it alone. Which might have contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the rest of our break. . .

    1. Yes! We definitely thought it was trash! Amazing how much they look like plastic bags!

It's so fun to be in warm weather and hear about negative degrees at home.......you are always like, 'well, isn't that a shame?'

  3. I've seen the Portugese Man of War a couple of times and they always look so strange. Glad to hear you're having a good time. Loved the pictures.

  4. So THAT'S where you were....FLORIDA?!? How awesome! Looking at these gorgeous photographs reminded me of my 20 years living there. In fact, you were right where I used to live, in the Palm Beach area! I lived in Boca Raton and my brother now lives in Delray Beach. Aren't the beaches in Palm Beach STUNNING?

And yes, I also remember encountering MANY Portuguese Man-of-Wars. And the seagulls flying above whenever I would open a bag of potato chips; hoping I would feed them :)

Glad to hear you had a great time on your vacay, my friend. These photographs made me miss Florida a bit.

Have a great time with your son! See ya when you get back!

    1. I'm back, Ron. Just went down to pick him up and come back same day. I thought of you while on trip.....couldn't remember where you lived, but knew it was that side of FL. You will be interested in one of our activities I will post about later. Have a great weekend!

  6. Great photos! I could do with some warmth as well, it's around 10C here. I would never have known that was a venomous jellyfish - like you I would have thought it was a plastic bag or something.

There's also a Palm Beach in Sydney, but it's not as spectacular as the one in Florida!

  7. What a beautiful place to get away for a few days! Looked like you had a great time and I'm sure the warmth was just about what you needed after the brutal weather you all had! Enjoy the time with your son!

  9. How FUN! We went to the beach last September and it was definitely refreshing. I didn't take my laptop--just a pad and pen. The only work I did was to come up with ideas while staring out at the ocean.

    1. I'm always surprised at how good it feels to be away from the Internet, even for a day. I need to regulate myself more, I guess.

  10. Well, I did leave a comment but it's vanished into a Blogger black hole. I think it was something on the lines of wishing I could also be in Florida right now (temperature here is around 10C), and agreeing that the venomous jellyfish looks more like a plastic bag to me too.

    2. Think it applies to the parents of the groom? Heck, why not! I say so, therefore it must be right, right?

  12. So here I wander over here from Craig's latest submission only to read about you disrobing on the tarmac? What would the kids think? Good thing you left 'em at home, The kids, that is.

And, uh, why does every pic of you look like an entirely different person? Are you like a secret agent or something? Maybe it's that HUGE Miami smile!!

    Stay warm my friend

    1. It is soooo relaxing to get away from the world. I don't know why I don't just do it at home. We actually tried it on Easter one year at home and I caught my husband on his blackberry and gave up.
