Fun in the Sun

Here are some of our adventures in and around Palm Beach:

One day, we took a shuttle to Delray Beach (shout out to Ron's brother!) and boarded a yacht for a lunch cruise on the intracoastal waterway. It took about 2.5 hours to go from Delray to Boca Raton and back. The lunch wasn't anything to write home about, but the day was beautiful, the ride was smooth and the view was marvelous.

Getting ready to board

Just a little place on the water. There were hundreds of homes like these along the way.

Another day, we traveled to the famous Worth Avenue. It is the Rodeo Drive of Florida.  We just enjoyed the beautiful architecture and flowers. There were many art galleries that we strolled through to see a few Picasso's and Warhol's as well.

Looking down the avenue, lined with palm trees.

Their handbags are treated like objets d'art.

Looking back towards the avenue from one of the many alleyways.

There were surprises like this at the end of the alleys.  I loved how they hang orchids in the trees.

Many apartments are located above the merchants. How charming is this entrance?

There was a metal sculpture garden in a large courtyard, all of children. This is just one corner.

On our last full day in Palm Beach, we did a bike tour. We enjoyed the first hour. The second hour began with one of those Florida afternoon downpours. We were completely soaked. Fortunately, neither of us had our phones or cameras with us, so none of the following are my own pictures.

This is what part of the bike trail looked like, along the water.

We passed the Flagler museum on our bike ride. Henry Flagler was an 'interesting' character who helped found Standard Oil, developed the east coast railroad, as well as many parts of Florida. He also built the hotel where we stayed. Our bike tour guide gave us the dirt on Henry as well as some of the other billionaires of Palm Beach, whose mansions we passed on the tour.

How cool is this tree? It is a kapok tree along the bike trail. It is 186 years old.

One evening, we went to Lafayette's Music Room (is there one in Nashville, Stephanie?). We enjoyed a delicious Cajun buffet and saw a live band called 'The Boss Project.' As their name suggests, they played a lot of Bruce Springsteen. It's not really mine or my husband's favorite, but they were really good and they did play a few other songs, including one of my faves (and apparently, the crowd's) to sing along to - Sublime's 'What I Got.' It was the highlight of the night for me.

  1. Wow, it all looks just as swish as Palm Beach is always made out to be. I love the sculptures of children - from a distance they look totally real!

    1. It's supposedly the richest zip code in the US, with 30 billionaires. Hard to believe Manhattan or a California zip doesn't beat it.

  3. These photographs are faaaaaaaabulous! OMG...they brought back so many wonderful memories for me when I lived in Boca and would boat along the intracoastal waterway! Aren't the homes incredible? And I swear to god, so many of these places that you shared look very familiar to me. What a nice boat you were on!

"we traveled to the famous Worth Avenue. It is the Rodeo Drive of Florida."

Yes, I've been to Worth Avenue several times and you're right, it's the Rodeo Drive of Florida!

"The second hour began with one of those Florida afternoon downpours."

Yup, so typical of Florida. But what's so different from the downpours here on the Eastcoast is that the ones in Florida don't last long, and then sun comes out again.

Thanks so much for sharing this tour, my friend. It actually made me a little homesick for the place I lived for 20 years. I really enjoyed my time in Florida.

    Have a grrrrrreat week!

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed the photos! I knew you would appreciate them, having lived there. The houses on the water were all so pretty, but we did see this one tiny, run down shack in between two mansions with a bunch of aluminum lawn chairs out front. Someone held out and wouldn't sell their property to developers! LOL!

  6. Really cool photos, Beej. The kapok tree is way cool.

Those big, gorgeous houses on the inter-coastal are lovely. Awfully low to the water, tho. Wonder what they do for hurricanes?

    1. I know! They were all like that. You would think a big rain would flood them all.

    2. Oh--and I forgot to answer--looks like there's a Lafayette's Music Room in Memphis. I don't think there's one here in Nashville. Although you reminded me of hearing my parents saying they ate at Margaritaville while on vacation. I said, "You DO know there's one downtown here, right?" They didn't know.

  9. It is SO gorgeous. I love that tree. I wish I had one in my back yard. Nothing better than a huge, old tree. Except or maybe hot weather at the beach. ;) What a fantastic vacation!

  11. The yacht you were on looks very similar to mine! A little smaller, perhaps. But then again, I come from old money.

    Looks like a fun time!

    1. I would live to have outdoor colored tile like that, but it would probably crack quickly.
