A Day in Suburbia and Hipster Land

I'm back with my follow-up to the last post. Here are some pictures (some mine, some not) of our day visiting my son and his girlfriend a few weeks back.

We went to one of those huge outdoor malls. I think it's only the third time I've ever been to one, despite living in the suburbs. There are just none close to me. This one was much better than the other two I have visited. After eating at a cute French bistro, we strolled around and checked out some of the shops.

We had to go to the American Girl Store for Middle Child. She was obsessed with these dolls not that many years ago and we had only been to the one in NYC. My son got a chuckle out of the salon, where girls bring their dolls to get new do's, complete with a cape. Only in America!

We visited a Tesla (the electric car) showroom. Here is what is under the hood in front! I liked everything about it, except the price.

This is a candy store called Fuzziwig's. It was sensory overload. The only candy I like is chocolate, so I wasn't impressed . . .

Except for the originality of their gummy products!

Does anyone else like Restoration Hardware? I love their displays. I always imagine myself designing floral displays like this at home, but then I never follow through.

We headed back towards the university and went to the art district. It's within a reasonable walking distance to campus and I'm jealous of all of the galleries, tiny restaurants and bars that my son has access to.  There are many murals on the sides of the old buildings.

Don't you love the artists' interpretations of well-known works? I was surprised to learn that this one has been here since 1986 (recently repainted).

Van Gogh, one of my favorites!

Then we had ice cream at a local place that specializes in unique flavors. I enjoyed the fact that my son's girlfriend chose Brambleberry Crisp, which was going to be my choice, until I saw the special Easter flavor, Savannah Buttermint, which tasted like these:

Okay, I guess I lied . . . I do like something other than chocolate candy!

Enjoy the spring weather, everyone!

  2. haha great to see the artists having fun with the art. You mean girls really bring dolls into a store and do their hair? ummm err, I guess whatever floats their boat.

    1. Yes, girls bring their dolls in to the store's salon for a make over. You can also send your doll to their hospital if something breaks and the doll comes back with a hospital wrist band, etc. Don't ask me how I know this . . .

  3. I think I'd have tried the riesling poached pear. I had blackberry-cabernet gelato once that was delicious.

I had to google the Tesla to see the price - youch!

    1. Oh man....that gelato sounds FABULOUS!

I was trying to determine how much I spend on gas every year vs. the cost of the car. I just couldn't justify it.

  4. Goat cheese ice cream??

    Cayenne ice cream??

    Ummmm, yeah. . . unique. . .

Did you try the Skyline Chili?

    1. I tried the chocolate cayenne years ago. The hotness didn't hit you at first. It was weird and I didn't care for it.

We were not in Cincy, so no Skyline, but I make it at home a few times a year. We love it!

    2. The Queen City threw me off. . .

      ;)

    3. I think they named it that because Cincy chili is both sweet and spicy.

  5. I'm like you, if it's not chocolate, it's not candy, so I would have picked the chocolate ice cream (either dark or milkiest in the world!). Looks like a fun day.

OMG, that American Girl Store is brilliant! And I love the mirrors above their heads! I've never heard of that store before!? It kind of reminds me of Build-a-Bear!

Love the lunch boxes in Fuzziwig's!

"Does anyone else like Restoration Hardware? I love their displays."

Yes, I do, but we don't have one in Philly. In fact, I've never seen one in PA at all. There use to be one in Winter Park, Florida (on Park Avenue) that I loved to visit. I agree, their displays are gorgeous!

Stunny murals! I especially like the one of Mona Lisa!

    "Savannah Buttermint."

Sounds heavenly because I love the taste of buttermints!

Thanks so much for sharing your trip. Hope you share more posts because I'm enjoying them!

And speaking of spring weather, it was stunning in Philly this weekend.

Have a super week, my friend!

    1. You've never heard of American Girls before? They are more popular than Barbie! Go to their website now!

It's a miracle we have Restoration Hardware here. We never seem to have many 'new' stores.

I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I had such a fun day visiting! Thanks, Ron!

  9. Most awesome visit, Bijoux! One of my nieces was absolutely obsessed with American Girl and I kept getting emails from them years after she grew out of it. I love the art district photos. Those areas can be so funky and cool. And they're even better when you throw in some ice cream and candy.

    1. Oh, to be a college kid again and go to dive bars on a street like that! I wonder how late the ice cream place stays open on a Friday night?

  11. Love those flowers, that so pretty. I could spend hours in a candy shop like that one. I like taking jut a couple of pieces of several different candies and adding them to my bag to sample later. Sounds like you all had a good time.

  12. Looks like you had a great time. I've never been to Restoration Hardware. I thought the bouquet was a cupcake with broccoli and such. I thought, that looks like sticks. Then I realized it was a floral centerpiece. I must be hungry.
