Come Sail Away

Over the weekend, my oldest daughter and my son-in-law treated me and his mother to a special evening. It was a combination Mother's Day and birthday celebration, since his mom and I have a birthday the same week after Mother's Day. The destination was to be a surprise and we were just told to dress up and be hungry.

I was so excited when we pulled into the parking lot. They were taking us to the premier seafood restaurant in the area, one which I've never had the good fortune to visit before. Its location is a bit unusual as it juts out onto one of the Great Lakes and is surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings.

You really have no idea what you are in for when you enter the walkway and descend the stairs or elevator to the restaurant level.

This is the bar area. As you can see, it is surrounded by windows.

In an L shape around the bar is the restaurant seating. We sat at one of these round tables. The view is spectacular. It took me a little while to realize that the entire restaurant is supposed to resemble a yacht or boat of some sort. I am slow!

We started out with a wonderful bottle of Chardonnay. Here is my meal: crab stuffed gulf shrimp with broccolini over a potato puree drizzled in garlic oil. I loved every bite.

Here is the restaurant from the lake. Doesn't it look small?

The roof or the 'top deck' where they hold weddings and special events because of this view:

Despite the lake effect snow, it can be pretty cool to live so close to the water.

Wishing the Moms a beautiful, summery weekend!

  1. That water is sure blue. That restaurant is neat too. Not sure I'd ever want to live or work in a place like that, if those rocks gave way the place may go splat lol But then as long as one can swim, things may not be grim.

    1. I color enhanced the last photo....it was just a cell phone picture, so wasn't great quality. The restaurant has been there 50 years, so I think it's safe!

  4. I'm right there with you, as re living near the water, having grown up on the shores of Lake Huron. They say that there's no place in Michigan that's more than a 2-hour drive from one of the Great Lakes; alas, I think the town we live in now is that place. . .

Looks lovely; glad you had a good time. . .

  7. OMG....I am in awe of the interior of that restaurant. It's faaaaaaaabulous! And what an AMAZING view! When I first looked at the view outside the windows, I thought that it was a "visual effect" created by film and screens!

Love that exterior photograph of the restaurant hanging off the stone wall. It looks like something from The Jetson's!

Beautiful last shot of the water!

Looks like you had a wonderful time!

Happy Mother's Day and Pre-Birthday, my friend!

    1. Aren't the blue lights used in the bar amazing? I'd go there all the time if it was closer and I was made of money....bahahaha!

Thanks for the good wishes! I'm going to a hibachi restaurant tomorrow night for Morher's Day with the rest of my family.

  9. What a great restaurant! Love the view. And, my mom also has a birthday the week after Mother's Day, but she's going to have to settle for a meal cooked in my apartment rather than in a lakeside restaurant chiseled into a cliff and meant to resemble a boat.

  10. I like the way the restaurant looks like a boat.Glad the meal lived up to the reputation. I like surprise presents - haven't had one for a while though!

When I was in Chicago in April, I discovered a cafe shaped like a boat on one of the local beaches. I was totally fooled until I got close up to it!

    2. Windy City is right. There was a very chilly wind coming off the lake. The temperature was a bit of a shock after Washington DC!

    3. Sounds like an interesting trip! DC is my favorite American city, and I'm not even patriotic. Looking forward to hearing more.

  11. Nice looking water there though my preference is to be ON rather than over ;-)

We're gonna take a road trip in a couple weeks, doing a drive-by your neighborhood. We'll be sure to honk and wave ....

  13. Fantastic gift! If I had just looked at the pics, you would have fooled me--I would have expected you to describe waves and lifeboats counts.

Yes, it takes pretty special places like that to counteract the dreaded lake effect snow.

I hope your weekend was super.
