After the Storm

We had a whopper of a storm on Saturday night all through Sunday. It always seems as though as soon as the trees and bushes start blooming in the Spring, we will get heavy rains that cause the flowers to drop from everything. I went outside yesterday and took a few photos of what survived.

We planted this rhododendron the year after we moved in. I love the color.

My husband brought these bulbs from the old house because the deer never ate them. I don't know their specific name, but they resemble paperwhites, minus the ghastly odor.

These foxglove seem to spread like crazy in the woods behind us. Some of them are nearly three feet tall.

My newest addition! I love calla lilies and they seem to grow well right along the foundation of the house. So far, I have white, yellow and now these pink ones. Always exciting to see them come back. And speaking of additions and things that come back every Spring . . .

Lots of greenery around our rock wall. But wait, what is that hiding in my lily of the valley?

This little guy made a bed here for about 48 hours. He didn't seem to be camera shy.

I managed to capture a few shots of him before he left (from the window, so poor picture quality).

Happy Spring!

  1. Seems a lot survived all the rain. Nice and green at your scene. Your visitor looks to have found comfy spot too haha

    1. We are very green, but when someone eats our plants, we turn mean.

  2. LOL, I just saw you rhymed your comment from Pat :)

Those lillies are so pretty and colorful! I too agree with everything being green; I know I always say that but living in a desert or living where there is drought, we just don't see this green.

    Cute visitor you had too!

Glad more didn't get damaged from the storm!

    1. It's always shocking to come home from a trip out west and see the green. Unfortunately, it doesn't last more than six months for us.

      I give Pat credit . . . It's not easy rhyming everything!

  4. I love the picture of the deer in the bushes! We have deer all around our house, but I don't have your skill with the camera...I can't seem to get a good picture of them.

    1. Well, they are never scared of me, so I don't have trouble getting decent pictures. Usually you can get within three feet of them before they will take off. But even then, they just go a few yards away, then turn around to look at you.

  5. I was loving seeing the pretty pictures of your flowers and then Bam! Holy cuteness! That is so awesome that he just hung around for a little while, what a cute little guy.

    1. I didn't see him or her today, so mama must have come back to retrieve him.

  6. OMG, those pictures of the deer are absolutely PRECIOUS! Great captures! It amazes me how close they come to your house. When I initially looked at the first deer photo, I thought it was a statue in your garden!

Your garden looks GORGEOUS! Between the greenery and the bright colored flowers, it looks magical! Doesn't seem like the storm did much damage at all.

We had some rain here too, but not as severe as predicted. I can't get over how much cooler the rain dropped the temperature. I actually had to wear a light jacket to work today because it was chilly.

Happy Spring, my friend! Can you believe it's already June?

    1. I'm super happy it's June! My favorite month of the year. Yes, it was shocking how cold it turned. We turned on the gas fireplace Sunday night. Back to warm weather today!

  7. Great photos, Bijoux! I love the deer pictures, particularly the first one with the little head peering out of the bushes. We've been having a lot of rain around NYC and it feels more like November than June.

  9. Lucky you! We never get deer in our back garden. Not even squirrels. The birds have the garden to themselves.

  10. Your calla lilies look great. I think we had them here at one time. And, nice catch with the fawn! I love watching them hiding in the garden or wherever.

    1. Thanks. I didn't know calla lilies grew in this climate until we bought this house a few years ago and found them planted near the house.

  11. Aw, beautiful flowers and your little visitor is so sweet.
Ooh, we sure had some weather in the wee hours this morning. The dogs were practically peeing in the kitchen but wouldn't go out for all the rain… complete with thunder and lightening. Ron got them to go out when it quieted down.

  12. Oh, that fawn is so cute.

I love perennials and watching them come back each year. I can't believe you don't like the smell of paperwhites!

  13. What the hell? I think they are the nastiest smelling flower ever! I assumed most people hated them!

    Or are you being sarcastic?

    1. Not at all - they are very sweet-smelling. Overwhelmingly so when they are inside, but still a good smell.

  14. We dodged that and a couple other storms on our drive. Seems like catastrophe followed us on our drive but never quite caught up.
