Middle Child and I picked six quarts of berries. I froze most of them, but have been using some in yogurt and a chocolate raspberry cake. Aren't they beautiful?
Afterwards, we drove another half hour to attend a county fair. It has been 30 years since I've been to a county fair. My husband and I concluded, at that time, that it was the worst date we had ever been on together (partly because of his sister and her boyfriend who were with us). But my friend wanted to try one out and I thought my daughter would also enjoy it, so off we headed to the fair.
For those who've never been, it's a lot of animals and contests and bad odors. Long buildings with stalls containing horses, cows, goats, sheep, rabbits and even guinea pigs. Every size and color imaginable. I think most of the animals were raised by 4H students. It was fun to see the names the kids had given their animals. We read the judges tags and felt bad when we'd see a big, red DQ on the slip for 'Disqualified.' Most were due to the animal being entered in the wrong class, but some were because of a physical defect on the animal, which sort of made us mad!

The best thing I ever got out of the only garden I ever planted were raspberries both black and red. My tomatoes, corn and cucumbers were a failure. Thing is I never planted the raspberries, I don;t know where they came from...and they came back every year.
ReplyDeleteI see 'wild' raspberries all the time around here. I remember eating them in the woods as a kid.
DeleteThose berries do look so delicious!! Good idea to freeze some too! How fun for your daughter to finally make it to a fair :) I always enjoy looking at the exhibits and the talent of some people. I do wonder how a teen can raise an animal and then auction it off, but lots use that for college expenses, so I guess it works.

The woodworking displays really impressed me! I guess when you grow up on a farm, you get hardened to raising animals for slaughter.
DeleteThat is sure a lot of berries, you'll be turning berry colors with all of those haha hmm I'll take your word on county fairs, they sound rather smelly.
ReplyDeleteI doubt the cat would like the fair either!
DeleteCat, are you talking about blue berries again? :p
DeleteHi Bijoux.
The berries are very well organized. I've only picked blueberries.
ReplyDeleteSkipped the fair this year...those rides freak me out.
You couldn't pay me to get on one of those rides!
DeleteI've never been to anything like a County Fair. There's something similar here called the Balmoral Show, which includes prize-winning animals, sheep shearing contests, vintage machinery, a craft village and so on. It's a good job the "defective" animals don't know what's going on, they'd be pretty upset!
DeleteSounds like you got a pretty good haul of berries! And I bet they were a lot cheaper than the local supermarket.
Yes, the Balmoral Show sounds similar to a fair. The judging of animals is so strange to me, but then again, we've got those awful beauty and body building contests.
DeleteOddly enough, it usually costs more to pick your own anything here. You pay for the 'experience.' They know just how to stick it to the Yuppie crowd!
Some of my favorite memories from my growing-up years are when we'd go berry-picking. Even with the little 'pickers', raspberries were easier than strawberries - too much bending over for the strawberries. . .
ReplyDeleteWell, Michigan blueberries are the best, so I can see why it's a good memory! We never got to do anything like that as kids.
DeleteReally lovely photos, and I see why that entry is your favorite. Greetings!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThe county fair is my kids' favorite. It is the last thing we do before we start school. Our last hoorah, so to speak. However, this year Labor Day is late (the fair is always Labor Day weekend) and school started before Labor Day so we are all thrown off. My kids love climbing on the big tractors that are displayed, looking at the animals, riding the rides and eating the junk food. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat berry farm looks AMAZING! What gorgeous berries! Every year Todd and I say that we will take the kids berry picking (strawberries) but the season is so short around here that we always miss it. We are lame.
Yes, our strawberry season seems to be just the first two weeks of June. It's easy to miss. You're not lame.....only my middle one has ever picked berries. The other two would have complained.....now THAT'S lame!
DeleteI've never been to a country fair, I was worried I would see animals being mistreated or sad kids having to sell or get rid of their pets. Maybe I had some preconceived misconceptions about it. But the berry picking sounds like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteSome parts of the fair I liked; other parts, not so much. It was disturbing to see sweet little bunny rabbits in cages that said, 'Meat Rabbits.'
DeleteIt's been years since I've been to a county fair, too! It's worth it just for the fried twinkies and people watching.
ReplyDeleteThe people were something! But I feel the same way about the food as I do about the rides.
DeleteI love country fairs! I was always jealous of the kids who got to raise and sell animals.
ReplyDeleteUnless you live on a farm, it would be difficult to do.
DeleteThat sounds like quite a day, Bijoux. I haven't been to a county fair in ages. My aunt has a summer home in the Berkshires and we used to go to the Cummington Fair, which was always a lot of fun. And, yes, quite different!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the Berkshires more and more. I think the secret is out that it's a lovely place to vacation.
Delete" .... and worried about the kids ... " - On the farm 'we' raise 'em to sell. Just because it's got a name doesn't make it a pet ;-)
ReplyDeleteQueenie wanted to name our chickens at first but i wouldn't play the game 'cause she didn't know farm. She'd get attached to them and usin' 'em for other than eggs would never be plausible. Not to mention the tears when they die after 4-5 years .....
The 4-H intentionally manages the auctions to help budding young farmers start out with knowledge of how it's done, from start to finish. Including making a living.
On a side note, we were told no chickens this year at the fair due to the bird flu.
DeleteYeah, the fair is the best, easiest way to transmit pathogens so it's best to eliminate that contamination alley.
DeleteAnd BTW- We still ain't allowed to use the chickens for other than eggs. Yet. But at least no one cries when they die ..... ;-)
Six quarts of berries... I the drool apparent? ;)
ReplyDeleteThey are delicious!
DeleteI was drooling so much, I even skipped an s. I bet they were delicious.
DeleteYour berries look delicious! I think you should have posted a picture of the chocolate raspberry cake, too. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteI have a number of strawberry and blueberry farms in my neighborhood, but I've never been picking. And yes, for some reason they are more expensive than in the grocery store. Go figure.
I probably wouldn't go picking if my daughter wasn't interested. I'm making a triple berry pie today.
DeleteIt looks very neat. Now, I'm craving a berry..(berries?) with some whipped cream. Some day, will go and take a trip with my kids :)
ReplyDeletexoxo
Kids like to take pride in picking so many little berries.
DeleteI used to hold my breath when the county fair signs went up every year, hoping the kids wouldn't ask to go!
ReplyDeleteHahaha.......I was that way with the IX (expo center) Indoor Amusement Park every winter. A germ-laden nightmare, in my book.
