Around midnight Friday, I came down with something unspeakable. We've all been there, so I won't gross you out with the details. I either had food poisoning, a stomach bug, or a psychosomatic reaction (previously only experienced before doctor visits or plane rides) to some disturbing news I learned the day before.
The last thing I consumed was chicken salad. It was made by me and my husband and daughter ate it with no bad reaction. But I can promise you, I will never touch it again. Due to illness, pregnancy, or poor alcohol-induced judgment, I have a list of foods I can no longer even think about:
French dressing
Spanish peanuts
Pork roast
7-Up
Orange juice
Chicken salad (as of 11-21-15)
My daughters are the same way. One won't eat spaghetti and one stays away from Swedish meatballs.
Our family is lots of fun at dinner parties.

Mine is chocolate pudding in those cups (not the ones refrigerated but in the metal containers; don't even know if they still make them). Got sick at school after eating it; again not sure if food poisoning or the flu but to this day, over 40 years ago, the thought alone makes me feel a bit nauseous
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you were under the weather, no matter what the cause; not fun to have stomach problems like this. Hope you are making a quick recovery!
betty
Oh Betty, I do remember those metal pudding cups in my lunch box! I can totally see why the thought of them makes you sick now. Glad they are no longer on the market to haunt you! And thanks, I feel a lot better today.
Deletelmao I can beat your list:
ReplyDeleteFish
Potatoes
Gluten anything
Hemp
Anything mushy
Dairy
Processed anything
Red meat
And probably more, most are due to allergies too, except the mushy stuff, that just makes me want to gag. Sucks, but oh well.
I have wondered about your food issues when you comment on Mary's blog. You should just make a list of food you DO eat! LOL
DeleteSouthern Comfort
ReplyDeletesloe gin
wasabi
An interesting, however brief, list.
DeleteI feel the same way about Tara's ham rolls. They were the last thing I ate after Thanksgiving four years ago before I wound up in the hospital with gallstones and pancreatitis. I know logically speaking they had nothing to do with my illness, but I can't overcome the aversion now.
ReplyDeleteThe mind is a funny thing.
Exactly! I really thought my daughter would get over the spaghetti thing (she was 7 at the time of the illness) but she never has.
DeleteImagining partially-digested Spanish peanuts burning my nasal linings. . .
ReplyDeleteAnd, uh, pickled beets. . .
That pretty much describes it!
DeleteAnd pickled beets don't deserve much love anyway!
OMG, how horrible! I can handle most any kind of sickness or pain, however, when it comes to being sick to my stomach with nausea, I want to take a gun and shoot myself. I cannot handle anything that has to do with stomach issues.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about sauerkraut. Just the thought of it makes me ill because when I was a kid, I got violently ill after eating it one night.
Hope you're feeling better!
X
Sauerkraut would probably be just about the WORST thing to ever get sick after! At least it's an uncommon food, so easier to avoid!
DeleteI'm better now. Thanks!
My list is fairly short--squid pickled in its own ink and green beans
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess the squid was contaminated? Too bad on the green beans.....they can be hard to avoid!
DeleteHope you're feeling better today!! My son got the stomach virus after eating spaghetti and garlic bread when he was little. He did eat spaghetti after that but not with the sauce, only butter and cheese. Now, he's okay with a little sauce but never did go back to garlic bread, or anything garlic.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that funny how our brain reacts? But super annoying for moms who find spaghetti to be a cheap, easy meal!
DeleteI hope you are feeling better snow. I had a really bad reaction to sushi one time and I can't bring myself to eat it again.
ReplyDeleteI don't go near raw anything....I got very sick from a grilled tuna steak once. I suspect it wasn't cooked all the way through. Never again!
DeleteI guess I've never gotten sick from eating any food...which is a good thing, because I love food. And I can't remember the last time I had the stomach flu, but a friend of mine is known for saying that she is just "one stomach flu away from her goal weight." Heh.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are feeling better!
DeleteLol, I did lose 2.5 pounds.....just in time for Xmas cookie season!
DeleteAnd thank you!
I'm so sorry, Bijoux! Hope you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I am fine now.
DeleteThe trick is to find something really fattening and bad for you that you can't ever touch again - chocolate cake, perhaps. :D
ReplyDeleteFunny how that has never happened!
DeleteSorry to hear that. I've just had terrible heartburn two nights in a row, and can only assume it was due to the stir-fry we had on both evenings. Most of the ingredients were familiar ones, except for the black bean sauce. So I guess that's the culprit.
ReplyDeleteI've never had heartburn but live with those that do. Their issues are usually things that acidic like tomato sauce. No more black bean sauce for you!
DeleteThankful for a cast-iron gullet. And don't diss my pickled beets, they'll come back at ya!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe only think I liked pickled is a pickle.
DeleteThat's a funny list. I've never had a reaction to food so any foods on my list are simply because I don't like them.
ReplyDeleteWow! My mind can't get past the bad memories.
