I'm not a huge Pinterest person, but I do like to use it to search for new recipes and other miscellaneous items. One thing I've found helpful are some of its cleaning tips. I decided to take on the tile that covers most of our main floor, from the foyer, to the kitchen, to the hall leading to our garage. There is a 25 year build-up of grime on the floor that no amount of mopping seemed to eliminate. I even purchased a steam mop last year, thinking that might do the trick. While I like using the steam mop over a traditional bucket/mop combo, it still didn't seem to get the floors that clean.
Over the past few weeks, I've tackled a section at a time, using one of the Pinterest tips. Here is a photo of a section:
How did I get the grout so clean, you ask?
Yes, toilet bowl cleaner (with bleach). I was able to easily squeeze the cleaner into the lines of the grout, scrub with a brush, then mop it up. Afterwards, I would use the steam mop to make certain all the bleach was gone. It's been a process, but I've been happy with the results. I tested another idea, that was more 'green.' You had to spread baking soda into the grout and then spray it down with hydrogen peroxide. This created a foaming action that could then be scrubbed and mopped up. However, since I've never done a line of coke, I was not very handy at spreading the baking soda into the cracks. Talk about tedious!
And now you all know what a boring life I lead!

I'm always conscious of the grubby grouting around the house, but then again I'm too lazy to make any serious attempt to clean it all. Maybe when I finally give up paid work and have plenty of time to spare....
ReplyDeleteI usually get motivated to do things like this at the start of the year. I'm done now for 2016! Ha!
DeleteBaking soda and peroxide is what I use to brush my teeth. No comment as to whether my teeth are cleaner than your grout or not. . .
ReplyDeleteAnd snorting a line of baking soda just sounds painful. . .
My solution to cleaning dirty grout runs more along the lines of, "the grout is dirty? How can you tell?"
;)
I'm a clean freak. My kids love me ;)
Deletelol might want to continue to stray away from sniffing back the baking soda. Who knew toilet bowel cleaner was extra handy.
ReplyDeleteIt was surprising!
DeleteI don't find Pinterest helpful keeping track of articles and research, but I don't use it as social media. At least you found something beneficial there
ReplyDeleteMost of their cleaning tips involve white vinegar, which I don't really think works that great. I was happy this worked.
DeletePLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to my house and do this. We have tiles in almost the entire house, except in the bedrooms. One of these bedrooms would be yours for a week, and at the end of the week you can go to Disney, which is less than 50 miles from my house.
ReplyDeleteDeal?
LOL, yes, Florida homes tend to have tile floors, don't they?
DeleteDisney isn't going to tempt me though!
"However, since I've never done a line of coke, I was not very handy at spreading the baking soda into the cracks. "
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHA! That CRACKED ME UP!
And hey, GREAT JOB on the tile grout. Cheers! You can definitely see the difference in the photograph.
I need to try this with the tile grout in my shower and bathroom floor.
Thanks so much for sharing the tip!
Have a super weekend! X
I probably would just spray down the shower with a cleaner designed for showers, but definitely try it on the floor. Glad you enjoy me humor, Ron!
DeleteWho would have thought! Certainly not me! Glad you did find a process that although tedious seems to be doing the trick. We rented a house one time that had white tile in the kitchen and it was a huge one with the dining room attached. I never got the idea of the white tile and it was a constant battle to keep it clean; I must have mopped it, washed it, etc., at least 2-3 times a week.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a Pinterest fan either; I like the time I spend there, I just don't spend a lot of time there; between Facebook and blogging, there's just not enough time when you throw in 40 hours of work a week :)
betty
White tile floors would be a bummer!
DeleteNope, there's really not enough time for all the social media choices out there.
This maybe boring, Bijoux, but it's a great tip! I had no idea to clean the groute so thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteThe previous owners left a box of tile in the basement and that's when I realized how dirty the tile was upstairs!
DeleteToilet bowl cleaner? No kidding. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's blue!
DeleteHa!
DeleteWhen I flipped burgers at the BK to get though college I used ammonia to loosen the grease and grime, then later bleach to whiten the grout. Not that much unlike this, only I was able to use a long handled scrubber and mop to do the work.
ReplyDeleteI kept the secret safe from me mangler 'cause he'd had a reputation of learning secrets then tossing over the employee. .....
Pretty sure I still have some grease from that place stuck behind my ears .... some jobs just never quite go away.
My former neighbors met while working at BK in college in the '80's. On their wedding day, they had the limo driver go thru their old drive-thru. That is one of my fave wedding stories.
DeleteBet that cost extra ..... ;-)
DeletePintrest is handy to me as well-- I scroll mostly on how to store this and that(books, toys mostly)
ReplyDeletenice clean tile Kudos:)
Thank you!
DeleteCleaning is important. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
It is to me!
Deleteblessings......
ReplyDeletesometimes its the simplest of things that do the best jobs.

Not an easy task, but definitely cheap.
DeleteThat's good to know. Of course, you're talking to a person who in grad school who filled a baggie with vinegar and attached it with a rubber band to the shower head in her rental apartment to soak off the grunge. A friend who was in my class saw it and thought I'd lost my mind.
ReplyDeleteI just learned that trick a few years ago! You are way ahead of the game, sister!
