The Juice

Is anyone else watching, 'The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story'? My husband and I are riveted by it. Between the chronological events that we recall and the casting, it is the most enjoyable 'true story' I've ever watched. It probably strikes a cord with my generation, as we grew up with OJ as a sports icon, Hertz spokesperson, and entertainment figure (little remembered fact: he was in 'Roots'!) If you are my age, you might remember where you were when you heard about or saw the white Ford Bronco cruising that California highway.

Many of the people surrounding the case became household names, the most unfortunate being Kardashian. At first, I thought the series was overplaying their role, but I've been researching online after each episode and it seems to be following the actual events and people to a high degree of accuracy. So yes, those Kardashian girls were really at Nicole Brown Simpson's funeral, as there is actual footage online to prove it. And OJ really did have to gall to approach Nicole's coffin and kiss her forehead, according to her family.

What I'm enjoying most are the actors' portrayals of those involved. Here are my favorites:

John Travolta as Robert Shapiro. First of all, he looks totally creepy with those big eyebrows. However, the pompousness and huge ego of this Hollywood attorney is really shining through.

David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian. I wasn't aware how close he was to OJ, nor that he truly believed in OJ's innocence (at least in the beginning). He's being portrayed as a sympathetic character and much more likeable than I would have thought.

Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark. Was she the key to why OJ was not convicted? Between her negative personality, chain smoking (crazy to see someone lighting up at the office again), disagreements with co-workers, and obvious hatred for OJ, she was not going to win over many jurors. The most absurd thing was that initially, she claimed to have never heard of OJ Simpson. I mean, what planet was she on?

Sterling Brown as Christopher Darden. Being portrayed as mild-mannered and a bit conflicted about his role as a black man on the prosecution team. Will be interesting to see his role in the courtroom as the series progresses.

Nathan Lane as F. Lee Bailey? Yes, please!
Courtney Vance as Johnnie Cochran. For me, best remembered as the inspiration for one of the best TV characters of all-time, Jackie Chiles on Seinfeld (Kramer's attorney). A winning performance by Vance (as well as Phil Morris on Seinfeld!)

Cuba Gooding Jr as OJ Simpson. Sadly, my least favorite portrayal. While I have loved Cuba in other roles, he just doesn't seem to be a good fit as OJ. Wrong body type, wrong voice, just doesn't have the demeanor of OJ, in my opinion. Or maybe I just remember OJ better than the other people involved in the story.

When we heard about the series, we were talking to our kids about our memories of the events. They really didn't know who OJ was. It was hard to describe the shock and disbelief that a lot of people had when it happened. No one wanted to believe that OJ did it. After the Bronco chase and the reports of his weird suicide note (remember the smiley face he used in his signature?), I think the tide shifted and the majority of us realized he was acting like a guilty man. Then there was the trial, the glove and the verdict. And we were all left wondering what the hell was wrong with our judicial system. And also, what would become of Kato Kaelin, notorious houseguest? (Because I still just like to say his name)

  1. I also didn't think Cuba was a good fit for him. But I guess it beats doing Boat Trip 2 lol Jackie Chiles was great. I know who OJ is and remember seeing it on the news as it kept interrupting my shows as a kid with the trial and such haha

    1. LOL, Pat! My daughters are a little younger than you. I don't think Barney or Sesame Street were preempted for OJ, thank goodness! I might have had my own crime scene to deal with!

  2. Yes I have been watching and have little to add to what you say, you are dead on. The characters are very good and accurate in looks and demeanor, especially Travolta, he has nailed it. Cuba as OJ falls far from the mark, I am surprised they could not find someone who fits the manner, voice and build of OJ.

    1. I'm glad to find another viewer! Hasn't it been compelling to watch? My choice for OJ would have been Blair Underwood.

  3. I had no idea they made a TV show of this. I do remember the Bronco chase and the whole trial.

This reminds me if the time when I first started dating my ex-husband in 1978. He, as a US soldier stationed in Germany, would get a monthly allotment of gas coupons for purchasing gas for his car (those coupons would bring the price of European gasoline down to about the same level as he would have paid here in the States). He had to sign these coupons when he used them, and I noticed how he signed them: OJ Simpson. I asked him why he signed them like that and he laughed and said that NOBODY looks at that signature. So then, of course, I had to ask, "Who is OJ Simpson?" Heh.

    1. Well, I'm glad he was doing that in 1978, not in 1998! Yes, I wouldn't expect you to know who OJ was in Germany, back then. But someone in California should have in 1994!

  4. Being someone who doesn't watch TV, I've not heard of this. However, I DO remember all about the case of OJ Simpson and they way you described everything about this show, I'm suddenly VERY interested in finding out more about it. Love the cast! And even without seeing it, I can understand why (from just looking at the photograph) you think Travolta is creepy in the role, because he looks it!

And the rest of the cast looks good as well!

Thanks so much for sharing, my friend!

    1. I think you would really enjoy the series, Ron. We are only in episode 4 of 10. You can probably watch it online. It's on FX.

  5. I haven't watched it; I wanted to but hubby tends to rule the remote here, LOL.

Having lived in Southern California during this time, I was riveted by it all; watched the trial pretty much from day one (except the pathology part, but that was during summer and it was hard to justify watching it with the kids at home). I remember the day the jury came back; how sad I was of the verdict but I kind of suspected it may go that way. I didn't realize the impact of the trial it in the area until later that night the kids and me were talking and son (who was in 1st grade at the time) said the principal had made an announcement over the intercom at school when the verdict was read; mind you, elementary school up to 6th grade. He knew OJ was found not guilty, however, I believe he was not necessarily innocent.

I felt sorry for all the victims' families and friends, but more so for the Goldman family.

    1. I'm looking forward to seeing the actor playing Goldman's father as well as Nicole's sister. I'm always surprised by some of the announcements made at elementary schools!

I only caught bits and pieces of the trial at the time. I was pregnant and had a 4 and 2 year old, so my hands were full.

  6. Amazing, isn't it, how the whole image of OJ just unraveled overnight?

I first heard of OJ when I was 11 years old, and he tore up Michigan State in a September football game. Then of course his 2000-yard season with the Bills, and going off for 273 in a game against the Lions. I never would have imagined in a million years that his life would come undone like it has. . .

    1. Not being a sports fan, I remember him as always smiling and being so likeable. Obviously, he hid his dark side from the public very well. He was a better actor than we imagined. Sad, really.

  7. We are hooked on this series, too. It all brings me back to the summer of 1994, such a monumental time in my life. I'm most impressed with David Schwimmer (who knew Ross could effectively channel his inner Shapiro?) and, of course, Cuba Gooding Jr. Good stuff!

  8. I was only vaguely aware of the O J Simpson business, being a Brit and not a sports fan. I followed the Oscar Pistorius hearings more closely. But the O J reconstruction looks interesting, I must check out if it's available over here.

  9. I didn't watch it but remember it when it happened.

  10. I did make a comment earlier but it's vanished into the ether. Basically I didn't really follow the O J Simpson business but the reconstruction sounds interesting so I shall check out if it's available over here.

  11. I haven't decided whether to add that to the list or not. I only watch so much TV so would have to identify something to bump if I wanted to add it to the list.

It was borderline mesmerizing for folks around here but we're big on football so there's that. And mysterious murder is always a 'good' time.

    1. Do a post on what you do watch and I will help you eliminate something! Ha! Actually, it's only on for 10 episodes and then done, so not that big of a commitment.

    2. Yeah, wouldn't that be an interesting post? Do you wanna hear what I watch openly, or should I include stuff that Queenie doesn't wanna know about?? ;)

    3. Oh, I'd love to hear about it all. I'm used to 'interesting choices,' as my husband watches all the survivor-type shows, but has never been camping! LOL!!!!

  13. I didn't watch it (and don't have tv), but I do remember where I was - it was on one of my wedding anniversaries and we spent too much time watching that ridiculous slow-speed chase.

  14. Gosh, Bijoux, I avoided this thing because I had my fill the first time around. However, I like your observations and recollections of that most insane time. And the show does have a first-rate cast. Please don't tell me how it ends! :)

  15. I remember the whole OJ incident well. I watched the Bronco driving down the highway live on tv. I was positive we were going to watch him commit suicide live. It was horrible. And then the whole awful trial. Ugh. It was just too much. I was an OJ fan. Both as a sports icon and as an actor (remember him in Naken Gun? Hilarious!). It was all just crazy.
My husband tells me that he was in law school at the time of the trial and when the jury came back his professor was so distraught she cancelled class that day. She was absolutely disgusted.

I haven't been watching the series. I thought the whole thing was a circus the first time around and I don't think I could watch it all again. And yes, I love Cuba Gooding Jr (have since Boyz in the Hood) but I can't see him as OJ. Completely different demeanor, body type, and doesn't look anything like him. And Travolta freaks me out.

It was very interesting to hear your take on it. It almost makes me want to watch it!

  18. i'm watching this series myself and what a great job on casting the actors. they look so much like the people they are portraying, i forget that it's not them, all except cuba. he's an okay fit, but i know too much of what OJ looks like to be confused. i'm ënjoying" it and i say he's guilty and if he's not guilty then he knows who did it. some people are saying his son did it. i believe he was around when it happened. also the evidence, DNA evidence, it's hard not to believe it. well he was found not guilty, but that doesn't mean he's not guilty, just couldn't be proven by law. i do tend to think the law is messed up in the way it's worded too. that's how a lot of people get off.
