Firsts on the First Day

After leaving our house at 3:30 a.m., flying across the globe, and checking in at our hotel at 3 p.m., Hawaii-Aleutian Time, we had to immediately change and get ready for our luau. This was something that my husband thought first-time visitors should attend, and though I told him it was a cheesy-touristy thing to do, we made our reservation months in advance. Fortunately, the Te Au Moana Luau was only a mile down the Wailea Beach Path (previous post photo).

We arrived and were shown to a large round table of fellow guests. It was nice to meet and chat with people from all over. In one of those 'small world' moments, I discovered that the woman next to me had a father who grew up in the town neighboring the one where I grew up. After ordering our first ever mai tais, we strolled around to see artists make jewelry out of shells (though there were NO seashells on Maui), watched orchid leis being made (the ones they put on us were chilled - straight from refrigeration), and watched some children playing a game similar to bowling, only you had to get the ball to roll between two sticks standing in the sand.

There was a short ceremony over the Imu Kalua Pig that was roasting in banana leaves underground, then it was time to eat! Going through the buffet line, we were able to try the roasted pork (sweet/salty and delicious) with poi (I didn't think it was bad . . . sort of tangy and good with the pork), Hawaiian fried rice, Molokai purple yams, pineapple coleslaw, Shoyu chicken, teriyaki steak, and assorted desserts made with coconut and macadamian nuts. I stayed away from items I can eat at home, like salad and stir fried vegetables.

It was a beautiful evening. Did I mention that the entire luau takes place on a lawn in front of the Pacific Ocean? After we ate, we watched the sun go down. It was our first time seeing a sunset behind the ocean.

How magnificent is that?

Once it started dropping, it went fast. I think it was all over within a few minutes.

Then it was on to the storytelling through dance and song. Te Au Moana means 'ocean tide.' That's about all I got out of it! Everything was gorgeous and it was exciting to see the fire dancers at the end. We walked home hand in hand along the beach path, listening to the ocean. It was a romantic end to our first day in Maui.

  1. Sounds like the perfect day indeed. Always weird how no matter where you go you find someone that is near you or has a friend/relative near you.

    1. I know! It seems to happen on every trip, especially if you wear a sports team shirt or something similar.

OMG...how wonderful! What a perfect way to end your first day there. Romantic indeed!

That sunset is gorgeous! I clicked on your photos to see them enlarged and WOW...that second shot of the sunset (and sail boat) is breathtaking!

Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about your trip!

Have a SUPER weekend, my friend!

  3. Sunsets over water are special. Did people watching it from the beach clap after the sun disappeared? That's what they do at the beach in Clearwater (and I'm guessing other places, too).

That is a wonderful photo of you - the ideal picture to frame and remember your romantic vacation!

    1. Yes! They did clap at the moment it was gone! Isn't it crazy that I had never experienced that before?

Thank you! I wish I hadn't had bare feet in the photo, but my feet were killing me from my sandals. I was glad I packed my tennis shoes for the walk back.

  5. Trying to remember what I wrote for a comment the other day. I think I wrote that if you are going to be in Maui, you should go to a luau, cheesy or not. I would want to see one and taste the food; looked like it was a fun event! One can never get enough of sunsets over the ocean. Where we used to walk Koda was right along the ocean; I can't tell you how many pictures of sunsets taken; each one unique in their own way.

Glad the first day was a good one!! Looking forward to more posts of your adventures.

    1. Aww, thanks Betty for coming back and for the email. I'm glad we did go to the luau. Everything and everyone was just gorgeous. And the food was good, for a buffet. I doubt I will ever get another chance to try poi, so that alone was worth it!

  7. The dancing looks fun. I like the colourful costumes and the torches. A shame you couldn't follow the story though. Someone should have given you a short summary at any rate!

  9. First off, I LOVE the new blog look! Then again, I may be biased because blue and orange are the Broncos' colors. It's amazing how a simple thing like a change of scenery can freshen things up and inspire you!

Not a fan of poi, but otherwise, every dish you mentioned sounds amazing. The best thing about Hawaii is the food! We used to buy shoyu chicken from Hawaiians who had grills set up in grocery store parking lots, and that was the BEST. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Hope you got a chance to try chicken long rice, another of my faves.

    1. I'm glad you like the new look. I'm kind of irritated though, because I liked another template much more, but there seemed to be commenting problems. I have never heard of the chicken long rice. Bummer that I missed it!
