Goats and Vodka

Our next day took us on a tour of Maui's Upcountry. This is the farming region on the slope of the dormant volcano,  Haleakala. It was quite a change from the beach and tourist areas of the island. It was also our most relaxing day, considering the other adventures.

First stop was the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm for a tour and tasting. It was started in the late 90's by a German couple who wanted to retire on Maui and open a Bed & Breakfast. They were disappointed that they could not buy goat cheese on Maui, so they decided to raise some goats and make it themselves. Local restaurants heard about it and the rest is history.

As many readers know, Germany is far ahead of us in terms of recycling. The German couple were disturbed when seeing so many old surfboards at the dump, so they began offering some free goat cheese to anyone who brought their surfboard to the farm. The boards now serve as fencing and decoration and in some areas, the goats are able to climb on the boards, looking like they are surfing.

We were able to feed the goats. They got a little crazy.

This was the baby goat playground.

After a tour of the farm and cheese making facility, we were given a basket of crackers and a canoe of flavored goat cheese. I have never cared for goat cheese in the past, as I don't like the strong (in my mind, gamey) flavor. Maybe it was the herbs/flavorings added to these, but I actually enjoyed them all. However, the best part was when we were each given three goat cheese chocolate truffles.....OMG.......they were wonderful! I had coffee, coconut and a passion fruit. You would never know they were made with goat cheese.

Our next stop was Ocean Spirits Organic Vodka Distillery for another tour and tasting. The vodka is made from sugar cane, displayed here.

I never knew there were so many different types of sugar cane. We were able to sample each different one, chewing the sugar cane and then disposing of the leftover stalk. It was surprising how different the flavors actually were. If you've never tried sugar cane, I'd describe it as chewing on raw rhubarb, only it tastes good.

This was the bottling room. Aren't the bottles cute? They sit on their side and resemble a bottle floating in the ocean. We were given mini bottles of vodka to take home.

This was the outdoor tasting area. We sampled their vodka, rum, and deep ocean mineral water. I don't like vodka, so it wasn't my thing. Now don't laugh, but I do consider myself a connoisseur of bottled and fresh water, as I can tell the difference between different brands and taps. This water had absolutely zero taste whatsoever. Maybe to some, that's a good thing. I wasn't that impressed.

We had lunch at one of Oprah's favorite restaurants on the island, the Hali'imaile General Store. It was built in the 1920's as a general store for the people working on the site's pineapple plantation. If you are a foodie, Bev Gannon is the chef/owner now. It was cute inside, with overhead fans and lots of colorful artwork. My husband and I both had the crab and rock shrimp cakes, which we enjoyed.

After lunch, we went across the street to Makai Glass Hot Shop and Studio and walked around to admire the art for sale. Way out of our price range, but I liked this Honu sea turtle. Many of the pieces were lit up like this with LED base lights. Another fun day in Maui. I will wrap up this travel log with one more post as soon as I get my act together.

  1. I was utterly fascinated reading about the German couple how they recycled the surfboards in such a clever way, and how they raised goats themselves and made goat cheese!!!

"Maybe it was the herbs/flavorings added to these, but I actually enjoyed them all. However, the best part was when we were each given three goat cheese chocolate truffles.....OMG.......they were wonderful!"

I would have really enjoyed that because I adore goat cheese and bet their's was AWESOME!

    What cute bottles indeed!

Thanks again for sharing your trip with us, I'm really enjoying these posts!

Have a fantastic weekend, my friend!

    1. Wasn't their story interesting? My son is living in Germany right now and is completely fascinated by the differences. The goat cheese really surprised me and the truffles may have been the best I've ever had. Smooth and not too sweet!

  2. The goat farm and vodka tasting would have been so much fun! I like what they did with the surf boards, very clever of them to recycle the boards in such a way! When we go on vacation, we look for things "out of the ordinary" to visit; both of these seemed like they would be up our alley if we were to visit the islands sometime!

    1. They were unusual places. Further south, there was also a lavender farm and a winery that specializes in pineapple wine. My grocery store actually sells it, so I've tried it before. It was fun seeing another side of the island.

  3. That is sure neat how it lights up. The goats sure look hungry indeed. They have the good life there though, getting fed by people all around.

    1. The goats were hilarious. I see why my kids always liked goats now. My spouse took some funny portraits of them.

  5. Looks like fun, but I would have thought the vodka would have been made of potatoes or the like where the cane would have gone into rum

    1. The vodka is just ocean water and sugar cane. No GMO's, pesticides, etc. They made it sound healthy - LOL!

  6. Wow, flavoured goat cheese and goat cheese chocolate truffles - they sound wonderful. I've never seen anything but your standard goat cheese. Funny how its absence on Maui led to a thriving business!

    1. It was a really interesting beginning. There's probably a lot of stuff you can't get on Maui. Costs too much to ship!

  7. I've never liked got cheese. I had a free sample of some in the store and then a freind had some I hadn't tried and yes, gamey flavor is what I thought too. A little too strong a flavor for me. Those glass shops are so neat, I love going in them when I find one. The stuff they can make with blown glass is amazing.

    1. Yes, I was surprised I liked the goat cheese; maybe the herbs and seasonings masked the true flavor!

      Isn't blown glass so cool?

  8. Goat cheese and truffles and vodka...and a German couple with an enterprising spirit - what a day! I'm slightly jealous now. I can't say that I've had a lot of goat cheese, but Aldi sometimes has a frozen pizza with goat cheese (incidentally, it's imported from Germany) that I really like. The goat cheese truffles sound tempting, right up my alley.

    1. I thought you would enjoy this particular day in Maui! The passion fruit truffle was so delicious. I would have bought some to take home if I had had the space in my carry on.

  9. I love goat cheese! Surprisingly, so do my kids. They have ever since they were little. I say "surprisingly" because they were always pretty picky when it came to other things. Go figure!

I love those vodka bottles. I'm sure I'd have bought some to bring home. Or finish in the hotel room...

  10. What a fun stop! I like goat cheese, as do the kids- but it does help if you've grown up with it, I think, and we always encouraged them to try everything at least once (and do so ourselves, lol, but I've eaten things they still go eeww at!)

  11. Goat cheese rules! And I love that surf board fence! These posts have been great, Bijoux. I really enjoy your descriptions and photos of Hawaii. Excellent stuff!

  12. I wouldn't mind retiring on Maui. Did you say goat cheese chocolate truffles? Bijoux, is the drool apparent? It sure looks like you had a great time surfing with the goats.

  13. Like you said, those bottles have a special shape and does look cute (and the colour adds to it)
Wanted to see a goat standing on a board.

  14. So glad I can finally catch up on your Hawaii posts!
It sounds like a wonderful day. I'm not a vodka fan either. Blech. I actually had some vodka on our Mexico trip last week and got terribly sick. I didn't even have that much. It was awful. Stupid vodka.
Love the goat farm. And love the story behind it. Thank you for sharing it!
