Busted Busters

About four years ago, my spouse brought home a Black Friday 'deal' that I was actually happy about: a Black & Decker Dustbuster. He paid a whopping $9.99 for it. I had never had one before and was excited by the power in my hand! I could now go around the perimeter of my kitchen cabinets and pick up every crumb without squatting down with a dustpan and broom that never seemed to get everything. It was also handy by the front door, where people leave their shoes, and invariably, their dirt, mulch, grass and dead leaves. Oh, the thrill of a spotless floor!

Well, at least for 12 months. Then the thing stopped charging fully. What started as a useful tool became an annoying piece of crap. The light would show it to be fully charged, but then it would peter out after about 30 seconds. I accepted that you get what you pay for and threw it in the trash.

After a few months, I started commenting on how much I missed my Dustbuster. Then, a bigger, new and improved model showed up under the Christmas tree with my name on it! Woo Hoo! I was back in business!

Again, only for about 12 months. Same story, second verse. I went online to find a nation of angry Black & Decker Dustbuster owners. Nobody could keep a charge in their 1-2 year old model. At first, I thought I would just replace the rechargeable battery. That's when I learned that the battery is the same cost as buying a new Dustbuster. Really? Also, that I'd have to drive 15 miles to safely dispose of the old battery. There's some energy conservation for you!

That's when I decided to contact Black & Decker to complain. The Dustbuster was supposedly under a 2  year warranty, so I thought it couldn't hurt. Within 24 hours, I received this response:

We apologize for the inconvenience you may be experiencing. However,  BLACK+DECKER (U.S.) Inc. warranties this product to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of two (2) years following the date of purchase.

Good news, except for the fact that I can't trust my husband to keep receipts and the attachment was a photo of the inside of a Dustbuster that in no way resembled mine! I got lucky though as my husband had ordered my Dustbuster on Amazon, so I was able to find the receipt online. I took a photo that showed every number I could find on my disassembled product, even though there was no indented code like the photo he sent to me.

Then I crossed my photos and hit send.

I'm happy to say that it worked and in about a week's time, I had a new and improved Dustbuster. This time, instead of a regular charger that you plug and unplug, it has a charging stand that you leave it in at all times. So far, so good, but it's only been three months.

I'll let you know how it's running next April.

** And yes, I have no idea what happened to my fonts and background. Nothing I did could correct it.**

  1. A dustbuster case through the years lol It's good that they at least sent you a new one. Things sure aren't built to last these days.

  3. I hope this one holds out, but even if it doesn't. at least you'll get another year.

I bought one of those Dyson stick vacs that hang on the wall in a charger. They convert to dustbuster-style hand vacs and have several attachments that swap easily and attach tot he charger. I LOVE that thing. Pricey, but it's the only vacuum I use for the whole house.

    1. I don't know what that is either . . . I will have to read up on vacs when this one dies.

  4. I'm very mistrustful when it comes to larger appliances with rechargeable batteries. I'd rather deal with the inconvenience of a cord. I'm not sure why...my rechargeable electric toothbrush has worked for several years, and all my cameras have rechargeable batteries.

    Knock on wood, I guess.

Good for Black & Decker to send you a new Dustbuster!

    1. Honestly, I'd rather just rely on a cord as well!

  5. I am SO glad to hear that they replaced your Dustbuster....yahoooooooo! And since I've never order anything on Amazon, I didn't know that they keep track of your purchase history and receipts. That is very cool!

I've only had one Dustbuster and LOVED it; especially since I had two cats at the time and it was great for picking up cat hair and also hard cat food around their dishes. I'm pretty sure it had a charge stand too. And from what I can remember, it lasted many years.

Hope you're having a fab week, my friend!

    1. Amazon history has been helpful when we do our taxes, since they used to not charge sales tax, but our state makes us pay it anyway!

    2. Wait, question for Ron: Have you seriously never ordered from Amazon? They are my go to place for everything!

  6. Yea that you got a new one!! I had one years ago and liked it. Not sure what happened to it though. Perhaps we were moving and I figured I didn't need it anymore? I like when a company stands up to their warranties, provided you can prove that you actually had purchased one. I hope this one lasts more longer than the previous two did.

    1. I was impressed that they sent me a new one and did not make me return the old one, which would have been a hassle.

  8. We have a Black and Decker Dustbuster that's working fine. Or at least it was the last time we used it, which was some months ago. Must give it a try and see if it's still a happy bunny.

  9. I order so much through Amazon. I have a Dirt Devil hand vac and it worked great for about 3 years then it stopped holding a charge. I should just throw this darn thing away and buy a new one. lol

  10. Good for you, Bijoux! You took on the system and won. I can't believe Black & Decker makes such a shoddy product. That name used to mean something. Well, good luck with the new one!

  12. I haven't owned a Dustbuster in years, but I do recall how handy they were. Interestingly, I also remember them never lasting very long. I wonder if they are intended to be disposable?
